Lydia E. Garrison
July 24, 1912 - February 25, 2004
DELTA - Long time Delta resident, Lydia E. Garrison, died on Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. She was 91.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2004 at Pea Green Cemetery, Pea Green, Colorado. James Gall will officiate.
Lydia Elizabeth Kunkel, the last of ten children, was born on July 24, 1912, to Warren David and Lucy (Mosier) Kunkel at Thermopolis, Wyoming.
The Kunkel family sold their Wyoming homestead and traveled by covered wagon to Maybell, Colorado, where they spent the winter before going on to the San Luis Valley. They eventually settled in Montrose County. Lydia graduated from the 8th grade at the Stone School.
Mrs. Garrison, a homemaker, belonged to the Pea Green Community Club. She always enjoyed growing a large garden and maintained an orchard with grapes, cherries, plums, apples, apricots, peaches and raspberries.
Lydia married Carl Garrison in 1931. They lived on California Mesa near Pea Green until his death in 1971. Three children were born to this union.
Those grateful to have shared in Lydia’s life include her two sons: George Garrison and his wife Arvilla of Olathe, CO, and Jake Garrison who has maintained the family farm in Delta, CO. She is further survived by seven grandchildren, seven great - grandchildren, and four great - great - grandchildren.
Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; a daughter, Eva June, who passed away in November, 2003; and three brothers and six sisters.

Marsha L. Knight
December 29, 1954 - February 23, 2004
OLATHE - Olathe resident, Marsha L. Knight, died on Monday, February 23, 2004, at the San Juan Living Center in Montrose, Colorado. She was 49.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Delta, Colorado. President Jack Prisbrey will preside. Burial will follow at the Olathe Cemetery
at Olathe, Colorado.
Marsha Lea Knight was born on December 29, 1954, to Robert and Dorothy (Mask) Knight in Dallas, Texas. She spent her childhood in Dallas and graduated from high school there in 1972. She moved to Olathe, Colorado, two years ago.
Marsha worked as a store clerk. She enjoyed genealogy and reading.
Those grateful to have been a part of Marsha’s life include her father, Robert Knight of Olathe, CO; two brothers: Mike Knight and his wife Debbe, and Bill Knight and his wife Dale both of Montrose, CO. She is further survived by two nieces and two nephews, and one great nephew.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Knight.

Earl Randall Couey
May 29, 1913 - Feb. 24, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Cedaredge resident, Earl Randall Couey died Monday, February 24, 2004 at Horizon’s Care Center in Eckert, Colorado. He was 90.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 28th, 2004 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter - day Saints in Cedaredge, Colorado. Bishop Stephen Palmer will preside. Military honors will be done by Grand Mesa VFW Post # 9221. Services will conclude at the church.
Earl Randall Couey was born May 29, 1913 in Athens, Texas to the late Roy Fulton Couey of Texas and Bessie Lulu (Johnson) Couey, of Tennessee. They moved to the Piceance Creek area when Earl was seven years old. He attended school there in a one room school house, going by horseback with his two sisters and three brothers. While in Rio Blanco County, Earl herded sheep, worked as cowboy for neighboring ranchers and broke wild horses. The family then moved to Rifle, Colorado.
Earl worked at a variety of ranching occupations, hired by local land owners. He also worked in Idaho as a logger with his older brother, “R.L”. In 1939, Earl and his cousin Delbert Johnson, went to California and worked at Douglas Aircraft Corporation in Santa Monica until “Pearl Harbor”. They returned to Colorado and entered the Army on February 24, 1942. Earl served in the South Pacific as Section Leader Rifleman and led a group of men on charges and maneuvers over a designated area for the purposes of gaining ground. He directed parts of his section for wiping out operations moving in, flanking, etc. He was directly responsible for all of the men and accomplishments of his section. After being honorably discharged on September 19, 1945, he met and married Helen Pederson. Earl entered into partnership with his older sister and her husband on a ranch near Redding, California. The partnership was eventually dissolved and Earl returned to Colorado. He then purchased a dairy farm in Arkansas. The farm prospered. While they were in Arkansas Helen became ill and the family found it best to return to Colorado. A home was built in Arvada and the marriage was later dissolved.
Four years after Earl’s divorce from Helen, he met and married Lois Smith. They lived in Lakewood, Colorado where Earl worked at Navajo Freight Lines as a diesel mechanic. Upon retirement, they purchased a home in Peach Valley near Delta where they stayed for 16 months and then moved to Cedaredge where they have resided for the past 26 years.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Couey of Cedaredge; one daughter, Diane Mae Line of Denver, CO; three sons: Larry Alfred Couey of Derby, KS, Lawrence Earl Couey of Spanish Fork, UT and Kenneth Howard Couey of DeSoto, IA; two step daughters, Alice Elaine Hinson of Ohio and Beatrice Louise Hawks of Craig, CO; two step sons, Early Henry Smith and David Clarence Smith, both of California; one brother, Robert Collett Couey of Central Point, OR; four sisters, Edna Mattyelyn Trusty of Creswell, OR, Rosemary Belle Frizzell of Garden City, KS, Helen Ruth Hudson of Montpieler, ID and Dorothy Love Hutton, of Hotchkiss, CO. He is further survived by 41 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a step daughter, Faith Annette Smith; three brothers, Roy Leslie Couey, Jesse Wilbur Couey and Kenneth Wayne Couey; and one sister, Willie Beth “Billie” Starr.

Carl M. Horn
Oct. 1, 1913 - Feb. 24, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Longtime Cedaredge resident, Carl M. Horn, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta. He was 90.
A graveside service is planned for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 28th at Cedaredge Cemetery. James Gall will preside.
Carl Malvern Horn was born on October 1, 1913 in Glade, Kansas to the late Theodore Christopher and Minnie Belle (Rambo) Horn. He spent his childhood and attended school in Oberlin, Kansas. He moved to Cedaredge in 1940 and has resided there until his death.
On April 9, 1967 in Cedaredge, Carl was joined in marriage to Mattie J. Austin. She preceded him in death on November 26, 2002 in Cedaredge.
Carl was previously married to Irene J. Crook. She passed away on March 27, 1966 in Delta.
Carl was a uranium miner and a carpenter. He enjoyed wood working, fishing, watching television and doing word search puzzles.
Survivors include his faithful cat, Jorge; his daughter, Janet K. Hanrahan and husband Tom of St. George, UT; a step daughter, Robin Sanchez and husband Bobby of Cedaredge; a step son, Ronnie Brewer and wife Judy of Cedaredge; three nephews, Omer Horn of Raton, NM, Mike Horn of Hotchkiss and Elvin Horn of Clifton, CO; one niece, Elma Barsulund of Fruita, CO; and one great nephew, Mathew Horn, of Grand Junction, CO. He is further survived by four step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Irene and his second wife Mattie.

May A. Sanborn
May 1, 1914 - February 19, 2004
PALISADE - Longtime Paonia resident, May A. Sanborn, died Thursday, February 19, 2004 at Palisade Living Center in Palisade, Colorado. She was 89.
A private interment took place at Cedar Hill Cemetery
in Paonia. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
May A. Tippett was born on May 1, 1914 in Silt, Colorado to the late Raymond and Gertrude (Davidson) Tippett. At the age of 5, her father died and her mother later married Roy Howard. She graduated from Silt High School and attended business college in Grand Junction. She later moved with her mother, step - father and sister, Helen Tippett to Paonia where the family purchased the Curtis Hardware Store and turned it into Howard’s Cash Hardware Store. They operated the store for 50 years. May also worked at the Union Fruit Company as a secretary.
She met Joe Sanborn, a coalminer, in Paonia and they were married on December 15, 1935. He died in 1973 in Paonia. From 1946 until 1960, May and Joe owned and operated Sanborn Service Station and the Conoco Bulk Plant in Paonia. She also worked at Palmer and Company Packing Shed as a bookkeeper.
Her interests included reading, picnics amd cats. She also enjoyed preparing large dinners for family and friends, spending time with her church family, and taking friends for rides with her to see the deer, wildflowers and the Black Canyon. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and caregivers at Palisade Living Center.
Survivors include two daughters: Cora Sue Johnson and husband Robert of Walla Walla, WA and Raye Ann Campbell of Montrose, CO; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, step - father and sister, Helen Hunten Haley.

Lloyd L. Price
August 28. 1919 - February 14, 2004
Cedaredge - Cedaredge resident, Lloyd Price passed away on February 14, 2004 in Cedaredge, Colorado. He was 84.
No services are planned for Lloyd at his request.
Lloyd Leamound Price was born on August 28, 1919 to the late John W. and Janie N. (Smith) Price in Wilburton, Oklahoma. He spent his childhood in Oklahoma and attended school in Henrietta, Oklahoma graduating in 1938. Lloyd attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated in 1949. He was also a veteran of World War II. Lloyd enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Those grateful to have known Lloyd are his friends, Beverly Shearer of Cedaredge, CO and Beverly and Duane Freeman of Austin, CO.

Dale Pilkington
Jan. 27, 1954 - Feb. 16, 2004
CRAWFORD - Crawford resident, Dale Pilkington, died Monday, February 16, 2004 at Horizon’s Care Center in Eckert. He was 50.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 27, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Dale Pilkington was born January 27, 1954 in Wray, Colorado to Floyd Wayne and Darlene Odessa (Jacobs) Pilkington. He spent his childhood in Colorado and California and attended school at Poudre High School in Fort Collins, Colorado. He resided in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1978 until July of 2003 when he moved to Crawford.
Dale was a heavy duty brake specialist. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, such as water skiing, snow skiing, camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed wrestling and was well known for dart playing.
He is survived by his longtime companion: Grace Young of Milwaukee, WI; his mother, Darlene Whiting of Sterling, CO; his daughter, Mallary Serkowski of Milwaukee, WI; two sisters: Sarah Keating and husband Joe of Crawford and Joyce Crawford and husband David of Salem, OR; two brothers: Robert Pilkington and Arthur Pilkington, both of Sterling, CO. He is further survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Pilkington and his step father, Jack Whiting.

Joseph A. Young
December 19, 1959 - February 15, 2004
PAONIA - Lifelong Delta county resident, Joseph A. Young, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 44.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 20th from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss. James Gall will preside. Interment will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery
in Hotchkiss.
Joseph A. Young was born December 19, 1959 in Montrose, Colorado to Fred and Dorothy (Aldger) Young. He spent his childhood in Cedaredge and Hotchkiss and attended schools there.
Mr. Young was a diesel mechanic at West Elk Mine. He enjoyed farming, camping, fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include two sons: Ricky Young and Corey Young, both of Paonia; his father, Fred Young of Cedaredge; his companion: Mary Stahl of Paonia; two brothers: Don Young and wife Diane of Cedaredge and Fred Young and wife Judy of Olathe, CO; and a sister, Hope Tilley of Florence, CO.
Joseph was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Young.

Maximilian Pfluger
April 22, 1931 - February 8, 2004
CEDAREDGE - Maximilian Pfluger, of Cedaredge, passed away February 8, 2004 at his home from pancreatic cancer. He was 72 years of age.
A rosary and vigil service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12th at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Cedaredge. The rosary will be recited by members of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Rockies Council. A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 13th at St. Philip’s Catholic Church. Rev. Mark Bettinger will preside. Services will conclude at the church.
Max was born April 22, 1931 near the Bavarian Alps in the small village of Oberneufnach by Augsburg, Germany, to the late Leonart and Barbara (Herbreckt) Pfluger. He was the youngest of nine children.
In 1947, Max began an apprenticeship program to become a tool and die maker at the Rudolf Diesel Engineering School in Augsburg, Germany. He completed the program of studies with honors.
Max married Johanna Waworka on November 8, 1953 in Markt Wald, Germany. She survives. Max always looked for new challenges, adventures, and countries to visit. In 1962, he decided to immigrate to the United States. His cousin, Ernst Knittel, of Westminister, California, sponsored his immigration by finding Max a job and appropriate lodging. On May 31, 1962, Max and Johanna arrived in San Francisco. Neither could speak English. Their strong will, work ethic and belief in themselves carried them through this difficult time.
Max loved his new country and enjoyed traveling and visiting many of its states. In 1972, he became a United States citizen. He worked for 30 years in California as a tool and die maker, 15 years in a small shop in Santa Ana and 15 years for Hewlett - Packard in San Diego. For seven years, he was a tooling and chemistry instructor for engineers.
As retirement time approached, Max searched for a suitable location. Since his favorite hobbies were fishing and camping, he set his sights on Colorado. Friends, Klaus and Elsa Winkelmann, invited Max and Johanna to consider Cedaredge. After visiting Cedaredge and meeting many friendly people, Max and Johanna decided to retire here in 1993.
Max was an active member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Rockies Knights of Columbus Council in Cedaredge. He was also a member of the Elks and the Thunder Mountain Good Sam Camping Club. Max enjoyed many hours of dancing, especially the polka. A major highlight of the past year was the celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2003.
Max is survived by his wife, Johanna, of the home; one cousin in Westminister, CA; three sisters; one sister - in - law; and many nieces and nephews living in Germany.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Max’s name to the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Rockies Council 11731, P.O. Box 742, Cedaredge, CO 81413.
