Edith Schriven 1905 - 2005

Edith Louise Schriven Dec. 22, 2005. She was 100.

Mrs. Schriven was born May 26, 1905, in Granada, to Charles Moore and Berta (Jenkins) Schriven. Her mother died when she was five and her paternal grandmother came to live with them. They later moved to her aunt’s home when her father joined the Army during World War II.

She attended school on the prairie. She and her cousin attended high school in Tribune, Kan. Her aunt made them return home to avoid the flu of 1918 - 1919. She resumed high school in Omaha, Neb., with another aunt. Her father returned from the service and decided to go west in a covered wagon in 1923.

Mrs. Schriven married Nelson Ankenman in 1924, in Delta. They were married 73 years. He preceded her in death.

She wrote and published many fiction and true life happenings and poetry. She was an accomplished watercolor artist. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.

Mrs. Schriven is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Lucie and Stewart Shrader of Delta, and Mildred and Jerry Thompson of Montrose; eight grandchildren; numerous great - and great - great - grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Bertha.

Pastor Charles Steinberg 1938 - 2006

Pastor Charles Edwin Steinberg of Paonia died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 67.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the First Assembly of God in Paonia. A funeral service will be Friday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God in Delta, with Pastor Phil Neely officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia.

Pastor Steinberg was born Dec. 8, 1938, in Paonia, to Kenneth and Charleen (Townsend) Steinberg. He attended schools in Paonia, Telluride and Cedaredge, and graduated from Southwestern Assemblies of God High School in Waxahachie, Texas. He graduated from Southwestern Assemblies of God Bible College in Waxahachie, Texas, with a bachelor of arts degree in pastoral ministries and missions. During his college years he pastored the Assembly of God in Venus, Texas, and was an associate pastor at Liberty Tabernacle Assembly of God in Fort Worth, Texas.

He married Patricia Patterson on July 16, 1960, in Fort Worth, Texas. They celebrated 45 years of marriage this summer. She survives.

Pastor Steinberg was senior pastor for Winters Assembly of God in Winters, Texas, from 1972 to 1980. He accepted a call to come to Paonia in December 1980, to serve as their senior pastor. He and his wife had served the congregation for 25 years.

He was a board member of Teen Challenge Rocky Mountain District. He was a former presbyter for local area Assemblies of God and served as chaplain for Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was involved in prison ministry and nursing home ministry in Delta County. He enjoyed computers, hunting, fishing, camping, swimming, his family and serving God.

Pastor Steinberg is survived by his wife, Patricia Steinberg of Paonia; two daughters and their husbands, Karen and Roger Reed of Rangely, and Marcia and Bruce Cole of Colorado Springs; his mother, Charleen Steinberg of Salem, Ore.; three brothers and their wives, Melvin and Mary Lou Steinberg of Centralia, Wash., John and Judy Steinberg of Craig, Alaska, and George and Heidi Steinberg of King Salmon, Alaska; two sisters and their husbands, Edith and Joe Killingmark of Gervais, Ore., and Anna and Richard Thomas of Salem, Ore.; a brother - in - law, Vic Chalcraft of Auburn, Wash.; and five grandchildren, Loren Duck, Monica Duck, Joel Dorsey, Jeremiah Dorsey and Joshua Dorsey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Steinberg; and a sister, Elveda Chalcraft.

Isiah Yoder 1935 - 2006

Isiah Jesse Yoder of Johnstown died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado inpatient unit. He was 70.

Mr. Yoder was born Feb. 11, 1935, in Belleville, Pa., to John P. and Saloma B. Yoder.

He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Yoder married Shirley Mae Patton on Nov. 17, 1956. She survives.

He was a truck driver for John S. Ewell until moving to Longmont in 1971 when he began working for C & M Ready Mix. In 1987, he and his wife moved to Cedaredge and bought Tri - R - Motel. They sold it in 1997 and in 2004, moved back to Johnstown.

Mr. Yoder enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, telling jokes, his family and inventing and making toys and gadgets in his shop. He attended First Baptist Church in Cedaredge, and later Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church of Johnstown.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Yoder; a son and his wife, Fred and Penny Yoder of Milli - ken; a daughter and her husband, Wendy and Dayn Borgmann of Longmont; his grandchildren, Amy Yoder of Budapest, Hungary, Scott and Cari Yoder of Chico, Calif., Heidi Polk, Ryan Polk, Kristen Yoder and Leah Borgmann, all of Greeley, Ryan Borgmann of Windsor and Tara Borgmann of Longmont; a great - grandson, Isaiah Polk; three brothers, Emmanuel Yoder of Morgantown, Pa., John Yoder of Belleville, Pa., and Raymond Yoder of Yellow Jacket; and a sister, Mary Byler of Belleville, Pa.

Mr. Yoder was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Yoder; and a sister, Ruth Baker.

A memorial service was held Jan. 23 at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Johnstown.

Dr. Woodrow Brown 1918 - 2006

Dr. Woodrow Brown of Hotchkiss died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Horizons Care Center in Eckert. He was 87.

No services are planned at this time.
He was born on April 28, 1918, in Glenwood Springs, to George Howard and Pearl Alvena (Personett) Brown. He spent his childhood in Eagle, graduating from Eagle High School in 1935. He graduated from Mesa State College in 1937, Colorado University in 1940, with a bachelor’s of art degree, then Grand Junction Junior College. Unable to continue college he spent the winter of 1937 - 38 as a lettuce tramp in Arizona and California. It was war time and he was one of the first to be drafted that year but was deferred to continue his studies.
Dr. Brown married Helen Marguerite Brooks on June 21, 1942. She preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1976. He married Evelyn Audin Edwards on Feb. 21, 1977. They would have celebrated 29 years of marriage next month. She survives.
Dr. Brown was inducted into the V - 12 program in 1943. He was placed on deferred duty. While he did a nine - month internship in Toledo, Ohio, at what is now Maumee Valley Hospital. He entered the U.S. Navy as a medical officer in September and went to Camp Parks, Calif., where he joined the 20th and later the 7th Naval Construction Battalions in the Pacific Theater. He went to Pearl Harbor, then to Saipan, with a reserve battalion for Iwo Jima. He was not needed there so he went to Okinawa. He was there when the war with Japan ended. He returned to the United States and was in charge of minor surgery at Treasure Island Naval Hospital until his discharge.
Dr. Brown was offered the first general practice residency at U of C. He spent two years there before he joined Dr. Howard Milne on June 28, 1948, and opened the North Fork Medical Clinic. He practiced there for 32 years. During those years he was associated with Hugh F. Williamson, M.D., William H. Derry, M.D., Robert I. Haverstock, M.D., Rodman B. Miller, M.D., Don N. Ridgway, M.D., Conrad Lindes, M.D., and Dorothy Lindes, M.D. He attended school and meetings between one and two months every year to keep abreast of the progress in medicine. He was a charter member of the Academy of General Practice.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Audin Brown of Hotchkiss; a son and his wife, Rex S. and Patty Brown of Edwards; two daughters and their husbands, Kelsey G. and William Hughes of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Marcina A. and William Strang of Arizona and Salida; two stepdaughters, Leah Audin of Denver, and Holly Audin of Delta; a daughter - in - law, Joanie Graham of Grand Junction; a sister, Ruth T. Bowhay of Grand Junction; eight grandchildren, Ryan Brooks Brown, Brett Brown, Heather Johnston, Adam Decker, Angie Decker, Kelly Decker, Kerry Brown and Barrett Brown; two stepgrandchildren, Joe Caldwell and Dustin Caldwell; and numerous great - grandchildren.
Dr. Brown was preceded in death by his son, Hollis W. Brown, DVM.

Doris Ensley 1922 - 2006

Doris Bellmire Ensley of Grand Junction died of natural causes on Jan. 29, 2006. She was 83.

Mrs. Ensley was born March 22, 1922, in Peach Valley, to Frank and Louise Cottier.

She married Clarence Bellmire on Nov. 28, 1942. He died Jan. 20, 1971. She later married her high school sweetheart, Eldon Ensley on Feb. 9, 1980, in Las Vegas, Nev. He died Dec. 16, 1982.

Mrs. Ensley was a manager for Montgomery Ward catalog store for 25 years in Delta. After retiring she moved to Grand Junction. She was a volunteer at Community Hospital in Grand Junction. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, canning for her family and jigsaw puzzles by famous artists including M. C. Esher, Clemente and Picasso. She was an avid sports fan for the Denver Nuggets and the Broncos. She never missed a broadcast game.

Mrs. Ensley is survived by four children, Larry Bellmire of Delta, Sue Schultz of Grand Junction, Fred Bellmire and his wife Nita, and Tracie and Sandy Bellmire, all of Naturita; nine grandchildren; 19 great - grandchildren; and one great - great - grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Franklin Cottier, Vernon Cottier and Clair Cottier; a sister, Margaret Hawkins; a granddaughter, Marisa Bellmire; and a grandson, Brent Bellmire.

A private memorial service was held Feb. 6 at Cory Cemetery.

Lora Todd 1919 - 2006

Lora Lyndall Todd of Cedaredge died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at her family’s home in Grand Junction. She was 86.

A funeral service was held Feb. 7 at the Assembly of God in Cedaredge, with Pastors Bob Hillyer and Phil Neely officiating. Burial followed at Cedaredge Cemetery.

Mrs. Todd was born Nov. 24, 1919, in Phippsburg, to Henry A. and Effie (Tyler) McGlothlin. She spent her childhood and attended school in Oak Creek.

She married Robert A. Todd on Dec. 24, 1936, in Steamboat Springs. They lived in Denver, Greeley and Alaska, before moving to Cedaredge in 1980. They celebrated 69 years of marriage last Christmas. He survives.

Mrs. Todd was a homemaker. She was a member of the Assembly of God in Cedaredge and the women’s missionary group. She enjoyed ceramics and rock hunting.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Todd of Cedaredge; a son and his wife, George and Jody Todd of Cottonwood, Idaho; a daughter, Alberta Jean Lackey of Cedaredge; Sarah Morris of Grand Junction, who was like a daughter; a sister and her husband, Nelly Mae and Joe Parker of Missouri; a sister - in - law, Linda Romer Todd of Grand Junction; four granddaughters, Robin Todd and her friend John Andrews of Warren, Mass., Lindy Rucker and her husband Vern of Cortez, Lori Meade of Aurora, and Tabitha Todd; two grandsons, Bobby Todd and Teddy Todd; a granddaughter, Tabith Todd; and 12 great - grandchildren.

Mrs. Todd was preceded in death by four sisters, Thelda Draper, Elaine McGlothlin, Beverly McGlothlin and Bonnie Marie McGlothlin; and a grandson, Terry Todd.

Warren Clark 2006

Warren D. Clark of Paonia died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Family Health West in Grand Junction. He was 85.

A funeral service was held Feb. 11 at Paonia United Methodist Church.

Mr. Clark was an accounting supervisor for U.S. Steel in Somerset.

He is survived by a daughter, Mara S. Derryberry of Grand Junction; three grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.

Raymond Evitts 1928 - 2006

Raymond Laverne Evitts of Hotchkiss died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 77.

A graveside service was held Feb. 13 at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss, with Reverend Christine Richardson officiating.

Mr. Evitts was born March 25, 1928, in Ithaca, Mich., to Wilson and Elsie (Probst) Evitts.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Evitts married Leatha Kimbley on Sept. 11, 1948, in Bremerton, Wash. They moved to Golden in 1967. He was an electrician for Gates Rubber Company of Denver. He retired in 1985 and moved to Hotchkiss. She preceded him in death.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, welding and woodwork.

Mr. Evitts is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Margaret “Marge” and Pete Matheson of Eckert, and Kathleen “Kathy” and Al Friesen of Perrinton, Mich.; a brother and his wife, Marcel and Pat Evitts of Ithaca, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great - grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leatha Evitts; an infant son, Richard Wilson Evitts; and a daughter, Marcie Hastings.
