Lois Lorene Ward
Aug. 12, 1915 - July 15, 2000

Lois Lorene Ward of Boulder died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at her home in Boulder. She was 84.

She was born to Luther Logan Arbuckle and Minnie Arbuckle in Weir, Kan., Aug. 12, 1915. She married Granville Dorsey Ward III April 7, 1935, in Kansas City, Mo. He died in 1993.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker. She moved to Boulder from Birmingham, Mich., in 1983.

Survivors include three sons, Granville D. Ward IV of Boulder, George Ward of Baytown, Texas, and David Ward of Kailua, Hawaii; a daughter, Deborah Lockwood of Boulder; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder. Her remains will be cremated and interment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park.

Josephine 'Jo' Julia Avner
April 13, 1913 - July 13, 2000

Josephine "Jo" Julia Avner of Louisville died at Boulder Manor on Thursday, July 13, 2000. She was 87.

Born April 13, 1913, in Louisville, she was the daughter of August Dhieux and Julia Armenia Dhieux. She married Sim N. Avner in 1959. He preceded her in death.

She attended the Emily Griffith Opportunity School and worked as an account manager with May D&F.

Mrs. Avner was a lifetime member of Eastern Star and the Air Force Academy Quarterback Club. She enjoyed watching sports and cooking.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbee Dinkel of Central City; a stepdaughter, Harriet K. Avner of Illinois; a stepson, Richard A. Avner of Illinois; three brothers, Henry Dhieux and William "Bill" Dhieux, both of Louisville, and Ernest Dhieux of Broomfield; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Iris Elaine Jensen.

Services were held at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Sharon Lee Bell
March 13, 1938 - July 18, 2000

Sharon Lee Bell of Boulder died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, of natural causes. She was 62.

The daughter of Charles A. Nuttle and Mella J. Ball Nuttle, she was born March 13, 1938, in El Dorado, Kan. She married Keith L. Bell on Nov. 7, 1959, in El Dorado.

She had a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University and graduated with honors in 1959.

Mrs. Bell moved to Boulder from Manhattan, Kan., in 1972. She worked as a counselor with Connect Communications, a physician referral service in Boulder.

She was a member of Broomfield United Methodist Church and enjoyed outdoor activities.

Survivors include her mother of Newton, Kan.; her husband; a brother, David A. Nuttle of Tallequah, Okla.; three sons, Brent Bell of Boulder, Brandon Bell of Thornton and Brad Bell of Denver; a daughter, April Bell of Boulder; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her father.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Broomfield United Methodist Church, 545 W. 10th Ave. A reception at the church will follow.

William James Purcell
March 3, 1956 - July 18, 2000

William James Purcell of Lafayette died of natural causes in Denver on July 18, 2000. He was 44.

Mr. Purcell was born March 3, 1956, in Boulder to John Purcell and Jo Ann Bastian Purcell. He moved to Lafayette from Louisville in 1989.

Mr. Purcell was disabled after serving in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed computers, flying and photography.

Survivors include his mother of Louisville; his father and stepmother, Diana Purcell, of San Diego, Calif.; and two sisters, Pennie Bednar of Superior and Jeanice Ash of Midland, Tex.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John "Jack" Purcell.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Louisville United Methodist Church, 741 Jefferson Ave. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one's choice.

James A. 'Jim' Merriman
Oct. 16, 1933 - June 24, 2000

James A. "Jim" Merriman of Henderson, Nev., formerly of Boulder, died Saturday, June 24, 2000. He was 66.

Born Oct. 16, 1933, in Port Arthur, Texas, he was the son of Vernon and Naomi Merriman. He married Eunice E. Carsten on Aug. 1, 1952, in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Merriman moved to Boulder in 1970 and worked as a manager at Rocky Flats for 23 years. He moved to Henderson seven years ago.

He was a graduate of the University of Houston and a former alumni association member. He enjoyed woodworking and computers.

Survivors include his wife of Henderson; a son, Michael Merriman of New Mexico; three daughters, Janet Merriman of Las Vegas, Nev., Katie Merriman of Golden, and Victoria Sutherland of Wyomissing, Pa.; a sister, Verna Williams; three brothers, Richard Merriman, Donny Merriman and Calvin Merriman; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Private memorial services were held in Henderson.

Luverne Henry Sindt
May 15, 1915 - July 10, 2000

Luverne Henry Sindt of Boulder died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services in Boulder. He was 85.

Born May 15, 1915, in Holstein, Iowa, he was the son of Henry Charles Sindt and Bertha Bremer Sindt. He married Marie G. Nichols on Nov. 1, 1938, in Boulder. She died in 1995.

Mr. Sindt studied accounting through correspondence school.

He moved to Boulder in 1937 from Iowa.

He was a retired senior trust officer at First National Bank, now Wells Fargo, in Boulder, retiring in 1980. He formerly worked for the Alba and Warner Dairies of Boulder County. He also was the former produce manager for the Safeway store in Boulder. After his retirement he did part-time accounting at Thornton's Shoes of Boulder.

He was a longtime volunteer with the Boulder County Republican Party and was a former member of the boards of directors of the First United Methodist Church of Boulder, Frasier Meadows Manor and Unity of Boulder.

He enjoyed genealogy and coin collecting.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Knudson Norton of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kathleen Blackwelder of Lander, Wyo., and Nancy Sindt-Kneisley of Lakewood; a son, Richard Sindt of Vietnam; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kerry Knudson Holden, and a sister, Mildred Cosby.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 7 in the parlor at the First Methodist Church of Boulder, 1401 Spruce St. The Revs. Cathy Norman and Ralph Henard will officiate.

Edward Camp Barnhart
July 16, 1920 - July 24, 2000

Edward Camp Barnhart of Lafayette died of natural causes Monday, July 24, 2000. He was 80.

The son of Woodson Barnhart and Lue Virginia Camp Barnhart, he was born July 16, 1920, in Webster Groves, Mo. He married Grace Louis Gibbs in Central City in 1955. She died in 1975. He married Lois Briant Humphries in 1976 in Colorado Springs.

He attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo., and Washington University in St. Louis. He received a bachelor's degree in music from St. Louis Institute of Music.

He served in the Navy Reserves from 1942 to 1946. He was vice president of Barnhart Mercantile Company from 1946 to 1949. From 1955 to 1980 he owned and directed a private children's summer camp near Nederland.

Mr. Barnhart was lead tenor in "60&70" with the Boulder Civic Opera, a tenor soloist in local churches and sang with Denver Arion Gesangverein from 1977-92.

Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Todd Richard Breyfogle of Fishers, Ind., and Russell Breyfogle of Castle Rock; a daughter, Carter Randolph Barnhart of Lafayette; two sons, Bruce Barnhart and Edward Camp Russell II of Arvada; and a sister, Nancy Jane Pienaar of St. Louis.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Woodson Barnhard; and sister Virginia Barnhart.

No services were held. He will be cremated.

Samuel Hibbard Bridges
May 23, 1928 - July 23, 2000

Samuel Hibbard Bridges of Boulder died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Boulder. He was 72.

The son of Samuel H. Bridges and Elizabeth Summerfield Bridges, he was born May 23, 1928, in Pittsfield, Mass. He married Norma Rogers on July 27, 1952, in Rhinebeck, N.Y.

He moved to Boulder from Lexington, Ky., in 1973.

Mr. Bridges worked as a project manager at IBM for 35 years before his retirement in 1988.

He was a Korean War veteran, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of El Jebel Shrine in Lexington, and an AARP volunteer in Boulder. He enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his wife of Boulder; a son, Jeffrey Bridges of Colorado Springs; a daughter, Ellen Shaner of Niwot; a brother, Stephen Bridges of Fort Meyers, Fla.; a sister, Elizabeth Bridges of Hyde Park, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Jerry W. Dickerson
July 21, 1938 - July 20, 2000

Jerry W. Dickerson of Louisville died Thursday, July 20, 2000. He was 61.

Born July 21, 1938, in Lyons, Kan., he was the son of John J. Dickerson and Marjorie Janssen Dickerson. He married Linda Hoss in 1959. They divorced. He married Sherry Tegman in 1981 in Greeley.

Mr. Dickerson graduated from Emporia State College in Kansas.

He worked as a house inspector for State Farm Insurance and worked for Monfort of Colorado. He moved to Louisville in 1978.

Survivors include his wife of Louisville; father of Shawnee, Okla.; two sons, Tim Dickerson and Jason Dickerson both of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Judy Moody of Shawnee, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Private services were held.

Contributions may be made to the Tisone Cancer Center at Boulder Community Hospital, 1100 Balsam St., Boulder, CO 80304.
