Nancy Karol Julian
Jan. 7, 1946 - Sept. 13, 2000

Nancy Karol Julian of Longmont died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at her daughter's home after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 54.

Born Jan. 7, 1946, in Lyons, Kan., she was the daughter of Burton M. Conard and Phyllis M. Conard.

A 1964 graduate of Boulder High School, she worked for Ground Water Systems of Boulder for more than 25 years. She married Steven Julian in Boulder in 1964 and later divorced.

She was a member of First Congregational Church. Personal interests included collecting figurines of houses, reading and fishing.

Julian is survived by her mother of Rifle; two daughters, Marcia Waters and Noelle Julian of Longmont; a brother, Stanley Conard of Rifle; and two sisters, Corrine Strobel of Mt. Prospect, Ill., and Jana Sorman of Grand Junction.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Howe Mortuary Chapel, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, with the Rev. James Johnston officiating. Services will conclude at the mortuary; cremation has been held.

Audrey Lois Kalen
April 24, 1940 - Sept. 9, 2000

Audrey Lois Kalen of Golden, formerly of Boulder, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in San Diego. She was 60.

Born April 24, 1940, in Del Norte, she was the daughter of June Hill and Lois Utley Hill. She married Berwyn Brown. They divorced. She married John J. Kalen on May 8, 1994, in Boulder.

She earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Colorado State University and a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Wyoming.

Mrs. Kalen worked at Centennial Peaks Hospital and Audry & Associates. She moved to Boulder in 1993.

She enjoyed sky diving, quilting, traveling, reading and movies.

Survivors include her husband of Golden; one son, Scott Brown of Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Beth Dawson and Danny Dawson, both of Northglenn; two stepsons, Michael Kalen of Westminster and Paul Kalen of Superior; and a stepdaughter, Nicole Kalen of Westminster.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, David Kalen.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Sunrise Amphitheatre on Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder.

Leila Mae Mooney
Jan. 18, 1907 - Sept. 14, 2000

Leila Mae Mooney died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at her daughter's home in Longmont. She was 93.

She was born Jan. 18, 1907, in Tunis, Mo., to Samuel Eldo and Laura E. Griffith Barnhart.

Mrs. Mooney was a homemaker and a bookkeeper. She married Henry Granville Mooney in Scott City, Kan., on Aug. 1, 1948. Mr. Mooney died in 1989.

A resident since 1915 of Scott City, where she was a member of First Baptist Church and various Baptist Women's Group Circles, she moved to Longmont in 1998 to live with her daughter, LuCinda Dew.

Survivors include her daughter and three grandsons.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Barnhart and Callie Lane, and two nephews.

Graveside services will be held today at 4 p.m. in Scott City with the Rev. Lynne Smith of First Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will precede, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Interment will be in Scott County Cemetery.

Robert F. 'Bob' Sabol
Nov. 9, 1929 - Sept. 13, 2000

Robert F. "Bob" Sabol of Longmont, formerly of Boulder, died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000. He was 71.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Dr. John G. Sabol and Mary Rothermal Sabol. He married Bernice Huver on Dec. 27, 1950 in Philadelphia.

Mr. Sabol graduated from Villanova University and earned his master's of business administration from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

He moved to Boulder in 1968 from Philadelphia, and moved to Longmont four years ago.

Mr. Sabol was a bookseller and publisher in Pennsylvania and was a Realtor for Bob Sabol Realty in Boulder.

He was former president of Salesmen with a Purpose, was a member of the Elks Club, a volunteer at Catholic parishes in Boulder, co-founder of the parish council at St. Thomas Aquinas, and a volunteer and board member with Emergency Family Assistance.

Survivors include his wife of Boulder; two sons, Bob Sabol Jr. of Boulder and Joseph Sabol of Longmont; two daughters, Eleanor Poe of Berthoud and Kathy Artis of Aurora; four granddaughters and one great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Sabol and William Sabol.

Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder.

Ronald J. Shanefield
April 1, 1947 - Sept. 9, 2000

Ronald J. Shanefield of Boulder died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000. He was 53.

Born April 1, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of Herbert Shanefield and Leah Rosenthal Shanefield. He married Joyce B. Carriere on Jan. 7, 1973, in Philadelphia.

He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He received a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling from University of Northern Colorado.

Mr. Shanefield lived in Greeley, Longmont and moved to Boulder in 1983. He enjoyed camping, music and trains.

Survivors include his wife of Boulder; mother of Philadelphia; and sister Elaine Zeitz of Philadelphia.

Services were held.

Howe Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Douglas Byron Armstrong
March 17, 1918 - Sept. 16, 2000

Douglas Byron Armstrong of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and formerly of Boulder, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000. He was 82.

The son of Byron Alen Armstrong and Gertrude McKibbon Armstrong, he was born March 17, 1918, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He married Ruth Publow in Toronto, Canada, on Feb. 1, 1947.

He received his master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto.

He worked as an electronics engineer for Bell Laboratories in Boulder.

He lived in Boulder from 1971 to 1997.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Peter; two daughters, Elizabeth and Martha; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Robin.

Maxine Hulse
July 31, 1947 - Aug. 30, 2000

Maxine Hulse of Auburn, Wash., formerly of Boulder, died of cancer Aug. 30, 2000, in Auburn. She was 53.

The daughter of Max Hutteball and Gwen Ruhaak,, she was born July 31, 1947, in Pasco, Wash. She married Jerl Watkins in November 1965 in Las Vegas. They divorced in 1994. She married Rodney Hulse in Juneau, Alaska, in 1996.

She left Washington for California when she was 3. She attended school in Boulder as a teenager. She lived in California until 1990, when she moved to Juneau and later moved to Washington.

Survivors include her husband of Auburn; her mother and stepfather, Don Ruhaak of Denver; her father of Idaho; her grandmother, Florence Ackerman of Boulder; a son, Josef Watkins of Idaho; a daughter, Mellisa Reiss of Oklahoma; two sisters, Marlene Kelly of Morro Bay, Calif., and Marilyn Middleton of San Jose, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Crist Mortuary, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Boulder.

April R. Austerman Peil
Feb. 18, 1955-Sept. 16, 2000

April R. Austerman Peil of Boulder died of natural causes on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000. She was 45.

The daughter of Kenneth LeRoy Austerman and Roberta Gibbs Austerman, she was born Feb. 18, 1955, in Anchorage, Alaska. She married Gary Peil in Wiesbadden, Germany, in 1973.

She was employed by Ball Aerospace in Astro Physics. She attended Sedro Wooley High School in Sedro Wooley, Wash. She had a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, San Diego.

She moved to Boulder from San Diego in 1990.

She enjoyed skiing, sewing, quilting and photography.

Survivors include her husband of Boulder; a son, Shannon, of Boulder; her father of Napa Valley, Calif.; her mother of Leesburg, Fla.; two sisters, Heather Quintini of Sliddell, La., and Lisa Vaz of Myersville, Md.; a half-brother, Kevin Austerman of Longmont; and two stepbrothers.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Howe Mortuary Chapel, 2121 11th St., Boulder.

Mary T. Van Vorous Aug. 10, 1927 - Aug. 21, 2000

Mary T. Van Vorous of Boulder died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000. She was 73.

The daughter of Alonzo H. Tuttle and Rachael A. MacLean Tuttle, she was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Helena, Mont. She married Ted Van Vorous on June 18, 1951, in Glacier National Park, Mont.

She earned a master's of fine arts degree in sculpting and painting from Montana State University and completed work toward a master's in education at the University of Northern Colorado.

Mrs. Van Vorous moved to the Boulder area in June 1956 from Midland, Mich. She was founding member and teacher of the Boulder Valley Adult English as a Second Language Program and worked as an English teacher primarily for Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian refugees.

She was past president and membership chairman of the Boulder Valley League of Women Voters, treasurer of Fairview Band Boosters, past vice president of the Boulder Garden Club and was involved in St. John's Episcopal Church, AAUW and the Boulder Historical Society.

Survivors include her husband of Boulder; four sons, David Van Vorous of San Jose, Calif., Lon Van Vorous of Fort Collins, Rick Van Vorous of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Peter Van Vorous of Arvada; a daughter, Lisa Van Vorous of Boulder; a sister, Emmy Anne Bonnell of Fort Worth, Texas; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jayne Wilhelm and Rachel Roddy; and a brother, Alonzo D. Tuttle.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1410 Pine St., Boulder. The Rev. James McKeowan will officiate.

Stephen Robert Cerinich
Feb. 8, 1920 - Sept. 5, 2000

Stephen Robert Cerinich of Boulder died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Louisville. He was 80.

Born Feb. 8, 1920, in Chicago, he was the son of George Cerinich and Kunegonda Buzolic Cerinich. He married Marjory Miller on Aug. 16, 1965, in Whittier, Calif.

Mr. Cerinich earned an engineering degree from the University of Southern California. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of Boulder; a son, Chad Cerinich of Aurora; a stepdaughter, Macie K. Wolfe of Morgan, Utah; a brother, John Cerinich of Chicago; four sisters, Lilian Tomaszewski of Louisville and Mary Cerinich, Kay Turek and Julia Robinson, all of Chicago; and two stepgrandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George Cerinich, and a sister, Magdalena Cerinich.

Memorial services will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 3300 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Savannah, Mo.
