Hayden Emlyn Davies

Hayden Emlyn Davies of Boulder died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home. He was 86.
He was born April 30, 1915, in Mankato, Minn., to Llewelyn M. Davies and Elizabeth Weeks Davies. He married Carrie Kesler on June 26, 1936, in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Mr. Davies was project coordinator for the physical plant at the University of Colorado. He moved to Boulder in 1940.
He enjoyed woodcarving, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of Boulder; two daughters, Joyce Cline of Lockhart, Texas, and Sharon Kelsey of Richmond, Ky.; two sisters, Emily Smith of Longmont and Hazel Killion of Broomfield; a brother, Delbert Davies of Broomfield; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Leland Davies.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Howe Mortuary Chapel, 2121 11th St., Boulder. Private Interment will be at Green Mountain Cemetery.

Carolina Elford
April 6, 1918 - Jan. 9, 2002
Carolina Elford of Boulder died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, in Boulder. She was 83.
She was born April 6, 1918, in San Salvador, El Salvador, to Mariano Guzman and Mena Elivera de Guzman. She married Jack Elford on Dec. 8, 1953, in San Francisco.
Mrs. Elford was a homemaker. She also was an artist, working in watercolors and weaving.
She moved to Boulder in 1987 from Washington, D.C.
Survivors include her husband of Boulder; a daughter, Moira Harris of Los Angeles; a son, Stewart Elford of Boulder; a sister, Dora Urrittia of El Salvador; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Private services will be held.

Shirley L. Hammerness
Sept. 18, 1920 - Dec. 25, 2001
Shirley L. Hammerness of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Boulder, died of natural causes on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Yuma. She was 81.
Born Sept. 18, 1920, in Austin, Minn., she was the daughter of Oscar J. Larson and Theoline Eastwald Larson. She married F. C. Hammerness on Jan. 1, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
Mrs. Hammerness was a homemaker.
"Shirley will always be remembered for sharing her love, kitchen and life with the people she met," her family said.
Survivors include her husband of Yuma, Ariz.; and a sister, Betty McNally of Longmont.
Services were held.

Mary Catherine Reichert
Nov. 5, 1913 - Jan. 9, 2002
Mary Catherine Reichert of Boulder died of natural causes at the Hospice Care Center in Louisville on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002. She was 88.
The daughter of Anthony N. Ehrhard and Anna L. Bigler Ehrhard, she was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Murphysboro, Ill. She married August E. Reichert on March 7, 1935, in Cobden, Ill. He died on Oct. 17, 1997.
Mrs. Reichert was a homemaker. She moved to Boulder in 1940.
She grew up in Cobden and attended school there. She attended nurse's training in Denver for two years.
She enjoyed traveling. For 23 years, she spent the winter months in Fort Myers, Fla.
"She had a great love for her family, she enjoyed gardening and was a great cook," her family said.
She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Boulder.
Survivors include three sons, Ron Reichert of Boulder, Chuck Reichert of Meeker and John Reichert of Rifle; two daughters, Karen Watts of Louisville and Beth Payne of Boulder; one brother, Charles Ehrhard; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Antionette Wittich.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. today at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 6739 South Boulder Road, Boulder, with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow the Mass in the Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery.

Charles Kenneth 'Ken' Richards
June 6, 1947 - Jan. 5, 2002
Charles Kenneth "Ken" Richards of Lyons died in a plane crash in Boulder County on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002. He was 54.
The son of Charles A. Richards and Mary Baxter Richards, he was born June 6, 1947, in Cincinnati. He married Bonnie Macmillian on June 12, 1971, in Cleveland.
He graduated from Wyoming High School in Wyoming, Ohio, in 1965 and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Cincinnati.
He previously owned a landscaping company, was a flight instructor for many years and was a self-employed investor.
He moved to Boulder in 1974 and to Lyons in 1988. He enjoyed flying and had a hangar at the Vance Brand Municipal Airport in Longmont.
Survivors include his wife of Lyons; his mother, Mary Richards of Tucson, Ariz.; and two brothers, Jim Richards of Suttors Bay, Mich., and Tom Richards of Durango.
He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Randy Richards.
A celebration of life will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce St., Boulder. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park.

Mark Steven Whitaker
Feb. 22, 1949 - Jan. 10, 2002
Mark Steven Whitaker of Lafayette died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in an auto accident on Sugarloaf Road in rural Boulder County. He was 52. The cause of death is pending coroner's investigation.
Born Feb. 22, 1949, in Morristown, N.J., he was the son of Dewarner Whitaker and Ursula N. Cox. He married Cheryl Falasca in 1980. They divorced.
A resident of Lafayette, he previously lived in Boulder and Nederland.
Mr. Whitaker graduated from West Palm Beach High School in Florida.
He was a mountain news carrier for the Daily Camera.
He made silver jewelry and stained glass windows, and he enjoyed golf and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel J. Whitaker of Boulder and Mark A. Whitaker of Lafayette; a sister, Susie Bowman of Orlando, Fla.; a stepsister, Robin Piaget of Columbia, Md.; and his former wife.
Visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Monday at the Nederland Calvary Chapel in Nederland.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Thomas Neal officiating. Private family interment services will be held.

Barbara Bennett Richardson

Barbara Bennett Richardson of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Boulder, died of natural causes in Alexandria, Va., on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002. She was 81.
The daughter of William B. Bennett and Susan Mateer Bennett, she was born May 21, 1920, in Harrisburg, Penn. She married John M. Richardson on July 22, 1944, in Harrisburg.
Mrs. Richardson was a graduate of Wilson College in Chambersburg, Penn. In World War II, she served as an officer in the Navy WAVES.
She lived in Boulder from 1952 to 1967.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientists of Chevy Chase, volunteering on its service committees and for its reading room. She also served as volunteer at the Herb Cottage at Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Institution.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and a granddaughter.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jeffrey Richardson of Boulder and Gregory of Alamogordo, N.M.; two daughters, Wendy Jones of Fort Collins and Nancy Ahern of Seattle; and 10 grandchildren.

Lucille E. 'Lucy' Grass
April 23, 1911- Aug. 11, 2000
Lucille E. "Lucy" Grass of Boulder died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Boulder. She was 89.
The daughter of Antonio Rich and Clorinda Moschetti Rich she was born in Brookside on April 23, 1911. She married Raymond C. Grass on Nov. 10, 1932, in Boulder. He preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Barnes Business College in Denver.
Mrs. Grass was a homemaker.
She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Boulder.
She loved cooking and reading.
Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Morris of Boulder, Linda Channel of Fullerton, Calif., and Deborah Grass of Boulder; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, Joel Rich, and two sisters, Mary Hanner and Virginia Kaltenberger.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Crist Chapel, 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
A service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Mary Church, 6739 South Boulder Road, Boulder.
Interment will be at Mountain View Memorial.
