Cleo Goodwin
May 29, 1902 – August 7, 2003
GRAND JUNCTION - Former Hotchkiss resident, Cleo Goodwin, died on Thursday, August 7, 2003, at Mt. Garfield Retirement Home in Clifton, Colorado. She had just celebrated her 101 birthday earlier this year.
A visitation will be held on Monday, August 11th from 9:00 a.m. until service time at 10:00 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado, with Pastor Rocky Schrabel officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Hotchkiss.
Cleo Monroe was born on May 29, 1902, to Elmer and Rita (Evans) Monroe in Tazwell, Tennessee. She spent her childhood in Tazwell and then her family moved to Madill, Oklahoma in 1909. She lived there until 1926, when she and her husband moved to Hotchkiss. They resided there until 1968, when they moved to Grand Junction where they have made their residence since.
April 25, 1922, Cleo married Claude R. Goodwin in Lebanon, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1997, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Cleo helped her husband on their farm, and she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Assembly of God in Grand Junction, Colorado, and enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Those grateful to have been a part of Cleo’s life include her daughter, Chrystene Tracy and husband William of Grand Junction, CO; two grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren.

Charles Allen Bishop
August 25, 1946 - March 28, 2004
DELTA - Longtime Delta resident, Charles Bishop, died on Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colorado. He was 57.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Pastor John Jaynes and Rev. Kay Spinden will officiate. Services will conclude at the chapel.
Charles Allen Bishop was born on August 25, 1946, to Charles Clayton and Agnes Arlene (Nutter) Bishop in Cory, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Delta and attended schools there. Charles graduated from the American Beauty Academy in Grand Junction, Colorado, and then went on to the Denver Institute of Technology in Denver, Colorado where he graduated with a degree in Electronics. He lived in Denver for ten years before returning to Delta, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Charles had a passion for studying Arabian horses and going back into the genealogy of their beginning in history. He enjoyed old paintings and had started a collection of old picture frames. He attended the Center of Religious Science.

Allmon, Silt, CO, Merlin Allmon, Forreston, TX, Milton Allmon, Basalt, CO, Marlene Williamson, Denver, CO, Melanie Hager, White Bear, MN, Donald Latham, Brackettville, TX, Deborah Flowers, Pueblo, CO, Douglas Bishop, Colorado Springs, CO; Clayton Bishop, Springdale, AR; fourteen great - nieces and nephews; numerous cousins and friends
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Bishop.

Bill Overman
July 4, 1917 - March 29, 2004
Wilbur Howard “Bill” Overman passed away March 29, 2004 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado.
A graveside memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Cedar Hill Cemetery
in Paonia, Colorado. Pastor John Nadasi will officiate the service.
Bill was born July 4, 1917 in Burr Oak, Kansas. He was the sixth of nine children born to Irving and Minnie (Jones) Overman.
Mr. Overman’s childhood was spent in Burr Oak and Fowler Kansas. He worked his way around the western half of the United States in his youth doing any job he could find during hard times. Bill and his brother Elwood worked the timber in Oregon, followed the Wheat harvest, picked fruit in Colorado and Oregon, worked for the railroad, and planted trees for the Forest Service. He had settled into the position of Wheel Wright in Los Angeles, California until he entered the U.S. Army on December 1, 1941. Mr. Overman took his basic training at Camp Barclay, Texas. He then went to a replacement training center Camp Robinson at Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was promoted to Platoon Sergeant and spent two years training recruits. Next Wilbur was sent to surgical school in Springfield, Missouri and then on to the 119th Station Hospital on New Guinea where he was stationed twenty - two months.
After the war Mr. Overman worked at building log homes, insulating houses, ranching, and working for Dupont for over twenty years, first in their dynamite plant then later driving semi truck all over the Western United States. He shoed horses as a side line for many years. Mr. Overman was a long time member of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Posse Search and Rescue.
When the Dupont plant closed Mr. Overman continued ranching and drove school bus in Douglas County for three years before moving to Austin where he ran a small cow calf operation before retiring.
For many years, before an accident with a wood planer cost him a couple of fingers, Mr. Overman entertained for dances in Kansas and Colorado. He was an accomplished musician being noted especially for his banjo playing. He also played several other instruments and was known for his singing voice.
Mr. Overman had many hobbies over the years including competing in rodeos, taking pack trips into the mountains, fishing and RVing. He spent the winter in Arizona for many years.
Mr. Overman married Jean Bohall in 1942. They had a son, Irving Dean. After sixteen years the marriage ended in divorce. Mr. Overman then married Anne Wren in 1963, and they had a daughter, Lori Anne. After four years that marriage ended in divorce. On June 4th, 1988, Mr. Overman married Suzette Erickson of Paonia, Colorado.
Mr. Overman was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Walter of Caldwell, KS; John of Amarillo, TX; and Lawrence of Los Angeles, CA.
He is survived by his wife Suzette of Austin, CO; son Dr. Irving D. and wife Patti Overman of Henderson, NV; daughter Lori A and husband John Julian of Grand Jct., CO. He is also survived by his granddaughters Britt and husband Scott Hemsell of Plano, TX; and Keri Overman of CA; a great grandson Cameron Hemsel of Plano, TX. Other surviving family members include two step sons, John Erikson of TN and Gary Erikson of Delta County, CO; step grandson John Erikson Jr. of TN; brother Elwood Overman and wife Fransis of Pouisbo, WA; four sisters, Ruth Roe of Mankato, KS; Esther Soule of Oklahoma City, OK; Rachel Baker of Ashland, KS; and Edith Schlichting of Meade KS; two sisters in law, Audrey Overman of Amarillo, TX and Ina Mae Overman of CA; numerous nieces and nephews; mother in law Lucille Roberts of Clifton, CO; sister in law Annette and husband Robert of Meagan, IA, and brother in law Mark Roberts and wife Linda of Grand Jct., CO.

Luella Florence Wolverton
April 30, 1902 - March 27, 2004
PAONIA - Longtime North Fork resident, Luella Florence Wolverton, died at Paonia Care Center on Saturday, March 27, 2004, one month short of her 102 birthday.
Luella was born on April 30, 1902, to Isaac and Erminne Woodhouse at their cattle ranch in Ruby Valley, Nevada. She was the last surviving member of her family, which included six sisters and one brother.
Luella taught in “one - room” schools in Nevada and Utah before her marriage to T.S. “Ted” Wolverton on August 9, 1925, in Elko, Nevada. They moved to Paonia, Colorado, in 1941. Ted passed away in 1970. Luella was a member of the Paonia United Methodist Church, Friends of the Library, and several women’s clubs, and she loved to play bridge. She also ran the Methodist Church thrift store for several years.
Luella was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Enid Rockwell, who died in Canada in 1992.
She is survived by her daughter, Inez W. Pottorff of Hotchkiss, CO; four grandsons: Dan Rockwell of Hotchkiss, CO, Greg Pottorff and his wife Pam of Colorado Springs, CO, Tim Pottorff and his wife Margie of Hotchkiss, CO and Thatcher “Ted” Pottorff and his wife Kathy of Grand Junction, CO; five great - grandchildren: Coriejean of Clifton, CO, Connie of Fort Collins, CO, Sierra and Landon of Colorado Springs, CO, and James of Vancouver, Canada; one great - great - granddaughter, Savanna of Clifton, CO; six nephews and five nieces, including Vi Granat of Palisade, CO, Lois Tuffly of Fruita, CO, Barbara Eldling of Grand Junction, CO, and a very special niece and her family, Leah Brown of Port Townsend, WA.

Carl Amsbury
March 2, 1918 - March 25, 2004
PAONIA - Lifelong Paonia resident, Carl Amsbury, died on Thursday, March 25, 2004, at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colorado. He was 86.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 29, 2004, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia, Colorado, with James Gall officiating. Burial will follow at Mesa View Cemetery, Delta, Colorado.
Alfred Carl Amsbury was born on March 2, 1918, to Charles Henry and Mabel (Hillman) Amsbury at Alta Vista, Kansas. The family moved to Paonia when he was three months of age. Carl spent his childhood in Paonia and graduated from Paonia High School in 1936.
Carl married Maxine Reich on August 1, 1940, in Moab, Utah. She preceded him in death on January 7, 1997, at Delta, Colorado.
Mr. Amsbury was a coal miner and farmer. He attended the Paonia Christian Church. Carl was a former member of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807 and IOOF Lodge. He had also belonged to the UMWA Local # 6417.
Those grateful to have shared in Carl’s life include his son Allen Amsbury of Austin, TX; a daughter, Helen Wade and her husband Wes of Paonia, CO; a daughter - in - law, Marsha Amsbury of Clifton, CO; and a sister Marian Shipley of Grand Junction, CO. He is further survived by four grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maxine; a brother, Ward Amsbury; and a son, Chuck Amsbury.

Lucie May Van Den Berg
October 21, 1920 - March 22, 2004
Crawford - Crawford resident, Lucie May Van Den Berg passed away on March 22, 2004 at the Paonia Care and Rehab Center in Paonia, CO. She was 83.
A funeral service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2004 at the Crawford Community Church in Crawford. Rev. Rick Clair will officiate. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery
in Crawford, Colorado.
Lucie was born on October 21, 1920 to the late Jay and Mattie (Bradshaw) Fisk in Paonia, Colorado. She spent her childhood in Paonia and graduated from Paonia High School in 1937 at the age of sixteen. Lucie attended Denver University receiving her bachelor’s degree and had attended Western State College, where she earned her master’s degree. Lucie then returned to Denver University earning her doctorate in education.
On December 23, 1946 in Crawford, Colorado Lucie married Theodore Van Den Berg. He preceded her in death June 8, 2000 in Paonia, Colorado
Lucie was a teacher and retired twenty - one years ago. She attended the Methodist Church in Crawford and Paonia. Lucie was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling to Mexico in the winter, Alaska in the summer and pack trips in to the west Elk mountains.
Those grateful to have shared in Lucie’s life are her son, Robert Wood and wife Marilyn of Crawford, CO; two brothers, Elbert Fisk and wife Jackie of Grand Junction, CO; and Bill Fisk and wife Helen of Dallas, TX; two sisters, Margerie Kirkpatrick of Montrose, CO; and Betty Wood of Northglen, CO; two grandchildren, Linda Black and husband Glen of Delta, CO and Sheri Wood of League City, TX. Lucie is further survived by three great - grandchildren, Russell and Stephen Black and Nathaniel Hughes.
Lucie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two brothers.

George Basta
April 22, 1928 - March 22, 2004
Cedaredge - Cedaredge resident, George Basta, died on Monday, March 22, 2004, at his residence in Cedaredge, Colorado. He was 75.
A memorial funeral service is planned for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge, Colorado. James Gall will officiate. Services will conclude at the chapel.
George Basta was born on April 22, 1928 to the late Vaso and Mary (Rodmon) Basta in Pueblo, Colorado.
George served in the Korean War from November 24, 1950 to August 29, 1952 with an honorable discharge. He owned and operated many businesses in the Longmont and Lakewood areas.
On April 16, 1976 in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married the love of his life Marlene Fresques. She survives.
George and his family moved to Cedaredge in 1995. He had been a bus driver for school district # 50. George was truly fond of many of the children who rode his bus.
George was an amazing and loving husband, brother, father, grandpa and friend to many. He had true passion for golf, fishing, gardening and his family. He touched so many lives.
Those grateful to have shared in his life are his wife of twenty - seven years Marlene Basta of Cedaredge, CO; four daughters: Julie Ann Kenville and her husband John of Lakewood, CO; Cheryl Lynne Robinson and husband Mike of Thornton, CO; Debi Renee Joseph of Tallahassee, FL, Georgina Kay Basta of Edwards, CO; two sons, Gary Dean Joseph and wife Sherrie of Castle Rock, CO; and Kader Dennis Joseph and wife Kathy of Eagle, CO; daughter in law Debbie Basta, and grand - daughter Ashia Marie Barela and husband William who is one of many grandchildren and great - grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents, son Stacey Ledon Basta and brother Danny Basta.

Charles “Gene” Wheeler
January 6, 1926 - March 22, 2004
DELTA - Charles “Gene” Wheeler, of Delta, died Monday, March 22, 2004, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was 78.
A memorial service is planned for 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 2nd at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Reverend John Muller, Jr. will preside. Services will conclude at the chapel.
Charles Eugene Wheeler was born on January 6, 1926 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to the late Eugene L. and Lillian (Rees) Wheeler. He spent his childhood in Pawhuska and graduated from high school in Muskogee, Oklahoma with the class of 1943. He continued his education at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque graduating in 1956 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Gene married Dolores Rasmussen on July 10, 1978 in Boulder, Colorado. She survives. He previously married JoAnne Towers on September 24, 1955 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The marriage ended in divorce.
Mr. Wheeler was an Industrial Developer. He spent his life throughout the Western United States and has resided in Delta for the past six years. Gene attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Delta. He was a member of the Industrial Development Commissions of Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri. He was also a member of the Toastmaster Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed snow and water skiing.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores F. Wheeler of Delta; a step daughter, Joan Rosenquist and her husband Kim of Delta; two step - sons, Dann Scofield and wife Terrie and Don Scofield and wife Kim, all of Broken Bow, Nebraska. He is further survived by nine grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
