Beulah Maude Sutton
Beulah Maude Sutton, 93, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Allison Grange Hall in Allison. Mr. Jeff Finch of Aztec Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery
in Allison. Visitation was held at Hood Mortuary on Tuesday.
Mrs. Sutton was born March 16, 1910, in Pan Handle, Texas, to William and Edith (Ramsey) Richardson.
She moved from Texas to Kansas in a wagon when she was three years old. She moved to Colorado in 1923. She married Leslie Sutton on Nov. 30, 1928 in Wiley.
She and Leslie lived in eastern Colorado until July 1937, when they moved to Allison. She worked on the farm in addition to raising five children until 1951. She cooked at the Allison Community School for two years, then cooked at the Ute Indian Agency for 18 years. She retired in March 1972.
She is survived by her husband Leslie of Allison; sons Daryl Sutton and James Sutton of Allison; daughters Delores Darrow of Florence, Ore., and Barbara Nelson of Allison; granddaughters Donna DeLaTorre and Pamela Baidwan of Sacramento, Calif., Vickie Sutton and Judith Becker of Allison, Cindy Greer of Marvel, and Stephanie Tenarnio of Durango; grandsons Terry Sutton of Johnstown, Jerry Sutton of Marysville, Calif., Donald Sutton of Durango, and Roger Phelps of Allison; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two sisters in Kansas; one brother in Kansas, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Betty Louise Phelps, a granddaughter, Leslie Baird, a grandson, Daryl David Sutton, and two great-grandsons, Zachary Baird and Douglas Phelps.

Harold Burtner Wilmer Sr.
Harold Burtner Wilmer returned to our loving Heavenly Father's arms on June 7, 2003, while resting peacefully at his home in Bayfield. He was 84 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, June 12, 2003, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Bayfield. Burial will be in the Pine River Cemetery.
Mr. Wilmer was born in Durango on Sept. 16, 1918, to Joseph Newton Wilmer and Grace Burtner Wilmer. He was raised on the family farm in Bayfield. He was a World War II veteran, and after being honorably discharged from the Army, he met and married Anna Lois (Nan) Tubbs Wilmer, on March 16, 1946, in Gallup, N.M. They were married for 57 years.
On June 30, 1962, he was sealed to his wife and family in the Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He and Anna are the parents of ten children, four of whom welcome him; they are Jo Ann, Harold Burtner Jr., Gary, and Jolene. Six children and their spouses remain here with their mother. They are Stanley Eugene Wilmer and Cheryl Ann Haley of Westminster, Susan Gay Wilmer Billiard and Wesley Paul of Huntington, Utah, Barbara Lois Wilmer Thatcher and Donald Emanuel of Pima, Ariz., Jay Newton Wilmer and Becky Radeke of Bayfield, Cheryl Ann Wilmer Jorgensen and Michael of Castle Dale, Utah, and Rebecca Nell Wilmer Potter and Shayne Glen, also of Castle Dale.
He had 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Wilmer was a self-made civil engineer with several projects and accomplishments to his name. These include the building of Lemon Dam near Durango, the Chama-Dulce water project in Dulce, New Mexico, and Strawberry Reservoir water project in Heber City, Utah. He performed the duties of assistant project engineer on the Westside tunnel of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel in Loveland, the Gallup-Tucson microwave project in Tucson, Arizona, the Hunter Power Plant in Castle Dale, Utah, and the La Plata County Road Department.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and he worked with young men as a baseball coach for the Castle Dale Junior Baseball League. In his youth he loved to fish and hunt and was the official camp cook for his brother-in-law's outfitting business. At Christmas, he was one of Santa's best helpers, seeing to it that each home in the Bayfield area was visited by Santa on Christmas Eve.
He will always be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and as a special friend to those who knew him. Our hearts will suffer a great sorrow with our loss, but we all know that he is free of the bonds of this world and continues his journey with those who have been waiting for him on the other side. Viewing was held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hood Mortuary on June 11, 2003.
Dorothy Marie Sage
Dorothy Marie Sage, 52, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at her home in Ignacio due to natural causes. A rosary was held at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. also at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, officiated by Father Eddy Andary. Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio.
Miss Sage was born February 16, 1951, in Durango, Colorado the daughter of Maurice and Colleen Sage. She graduated high school from Ignacio and worked for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe at the Motor Pool for 27 years. Ms. Sage enjoyed beading, reading, fishing, the outdoors, baking and cooking, gardening and taking trips.
Her brother, Dominic, said, "The family greatly appreciats everyone's help and support in her final days. We expecially thank her family and friends as they stood by her.
She is survived by her mother, Colleen W. Sage of Ignacio; a sister, Leigh Sage of Ignacio; two brothers, Dominic and Mike Sage of Ignacio; a daughter, India Sage of Ignacio; seven aunts, two uncles, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Maurice Sage; three brothers, LeRoy, Sidney and Maurice Sage, Jr. , and an infant daughter, Baby Sage.

Wanda Carol McConnel
Wanda Carol McConnel, 65, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Calvary Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Dan Straw officiated. Cremation occured at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Mrs. McConnel was born April 26, 1938, in western La Plata county to Clive and Fay Peterson. She grew up and attended school in Bayfield and graduated from Bayfield High School. She then attended Fort Lewis College and Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley. She married Jack McConnel on Jan. 11, 1974, in Aztec, N.M.
Mrs. McConnel was a telephone operator for many years but was always a mother first. She also helped her husband with a trucking company and helped run the family ranch. Mrs. McConnel loved the outdoors, flowers, plants and the mountains that she lived in. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting.
Her son Robert said, "She was happiest when doing for others and she never knew a stranger."
She is survived by two sons, Michael Cruse of Amarillo, Texas, and Robert Cruse of Durango; two stepsons, Bill McConnel and Doug McConnel of Bloomfield, N.M.; 10 grandchildren, a brother, Noel Peterson of Durango, and a sister, Hilda Wales of Albuquerque, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack McConnel, in 1989, her father, Clive A. Peterson, and her mother, Fay Peterson.
Sarah L. Montgomery
Sarah L. Montgomery, 71, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Church of Christ, Bayfield, with the Rev. Gene Chapin officiating. Burial will occur at Fort Logan National Cemetery
in Denver at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27. Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary in Durango from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 23. The family will greet friends at 5 p.m.
Mrs. Montgomery was born June 12, 1931, in Texline, Texas, to Monsie and Joyce Davis. She moved to Bayfield in the 1940s and was a graduate of Bayfield High School. Mrs. Montgomery and her mother, who was known as Mom Davis, opened the Hi-Way Cafe in Bayfield, and it became a favorite stopping place for many locals and truck drivers. She married Leonard Montgomery on Dec. 16, 1955, in San Diego, Calif. She was very active in the Bayfield Church of Christ and loved cooking, oil painting and helping others.
She is survived by three daughters, Alma J. Evans of Bayfield, Leona Taylor of Colleyville, Texas, and Pattie VanGieson of Alamosa; a son, Burton Montgomery of Bayfield; one sister, Mary Joyce Montgomery of Bayfield; grandchildren Blake and Nikkie Evans, Jerrod and Josh Taylor, Michael VanGieson, and Andrea, Jessica, Ethan and Samuel Montgomery; five step-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Allene Moore.

Henry Cloud Taylor, Sr.
Henry Cloud Taylor, 86, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango due to natural causes. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Church of Christ in Bayfield with the Rev. Gene Chapin officiating. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio. Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Taylor was born March 11, 1917, in Ignacio to John and Kitty Taylor. In his younger years, Mr. Taylor had been a sparring partner for boxer Joe Lewis when he passed through. He had also worked at the steel mills in Pueblo. Mr. Taylor was a range rider in East Cat Creek, Sandoval, and Ignacio Canyon. He also raised sheep on the Piedra. His ranch has been passed down in the family and is now owned by his grandson, Lance.
He is survived by his children: sons Erwin Taylor of Bayfield, Buddy Taylor of Ignacio, Henry Taylor of Cortez, and Laddie Taylor of Denver; daughters Mary Frances Taylor of Ignacio, Sunny Dez Waratza of Denver, and Henrietta Taylor of Denver; grandchildren Trent and Andrea Taylor of Bayfield, LaTitia Taylor of Bayfield, Travis Taylor of Bayfield, Lance Taylor of Arboles, Stefanie Fasano of Ignacio, Cecilia O'John of Denver, Cavanaugh O'John of Denver, Amos O'John of Denver, Michelle Olguin of Ignacio, Raquel Taylor of Ignacio, Rochelle Aguilar of Ignacio, Buddy Ray Taylor of Ignacio, Little Fawn McCook of Denver, Paco McCook of Denver, Isaiah McCook of Denver, Boylad McCook of Denver and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sons Frederick Taylor, Jason Taylor and Dean Taylor , and a daughter, Eva O'John.
Mr. Taylor lived in Los Angeles, Calif., until he retired in the early 1980s back to Ignacio. He enjoyed baseball throughout his life, as well as hunting, sports and music. Said of him by his son Erwin, "My dad is well liked by all parts and divisions of the community and he had many friends. He asked me to say goodbye to his friends."
