Barbara L. "Babs" Ball

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Durango Christian Church for Barbara L. "Babs" Ball, an active church member, who died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at her daughter’s home in Fort Collins, Colo. She was 61.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Larry Osborne will officiate at services. A graveside service was held at the cemetery in Sumner, Mich., on Nov. 22.

Mrs. Ball was born Dec. 10, 1938, in Oklahoma. She married Dennis Ball on Jan. 31, 1970.

Mrs. Ball and her husband moved from Michigan to Colorado. Her passion was the church, where she was Sunday school superintendent, sang in the choir, and led Bible study. She was also an active member of the International Beta Sigma Thi Sorority.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Ball of Durango; two sons, Kevin Ball of Durango and Dan Ball of Michigan; one daughter, Barbie Wernimont of Fort Collins; six sisters; six brothers; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to the Barbara Ball Memorial Fund, Four Corners Christian Service Camp, 14051 County Road 37, Mancos, CO 81328.

Preston Julius Missey

Preston Julius Missey died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, in Bloomfield, N.M. He was 80.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Missey was born July 2, 1920, in Birch Tree, Mo. He was a former resident of Durango.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Mae Missey of Bloomfield, N.M.; a son, Lin Missey of Durango; three daughters, Selena Spencer of Aztec, N.M., Pam Murphy of Durango and Judy Christman of California; three brothers, Lawrence Missey of California, and Clarence Missey and Charles Missey, both of Missouri; two sisters, Viola Kincade and Laura Drennin; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time.

Courtland C. Fellers and
Dorothea F. Fellers

A memorial gathering and celebration of life will be held for Courtland C. Fellers, 84, and Dorothea F. Fellers, 86, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000 at The Old Fort Lewis Library experimental station on Highway 140, five miles south of Hesperus.

Courtland was born Dec. 28, 1915 and died Sept. 16, 2000. Dorothea was born Nov. 8, 1913 and died May 19, 2000.

The gathering will be hosted by the Fellers’ daughter and son-in-law Pam and Doug Ramsey; daughter Judy Seidle; and grandson and wife Jud and Anna Wright.

A light lunch and snacks will be served.

Marilyn F. Bishop

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Bueler Mortuary Chapel in Chandler, Ariz., for Marilyn F. Bishop, who died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Chandler, Ariz. She was 54.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Bishop was born in Jacksonville, Texas. She lived in Durango from 1976 until moving to Arizona in 1987. She was a dental ceramist.

Survivors include her husband, George Bishop III of Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Peter Simms of Ft. Campbell, Ky.; a sister, Vivan Hulse of Toledo, Ohio; and two nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 150 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Vicki Lou Werts

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Vicki Lou Werts, a Durango resident, who died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at her home in Durango. She was 50.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate at services. Burial will be at Hermosa Cemetery.

Mrs. Werts was born Oct. 20, 1950 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Her family moved to Durango in 1954 and she graduated from Durango High School. She married David A. Werts on April 14, 1969, in Hawaii. Mrs. Werts worked in banking for 30 years, and was last employed at Innovative Software. She mentored many children and opened her home regularly to young people. She enjoyed gardening and boating at Navajo Lake.

She is survived by her husband, David, of Durango; two sons, Eric and Justin Werts, both of Durango; parents, Tony and Eileen Meyer of Aztec; father and mother-in-law, Vernon and Irene Werts of Colorado Springs; four sisters, Kathy Ryan of Durango, Donna Belford of Colorado Springs, Shirley Sabaian of Prescott, Ariz., and Linda Slade of Aztec; two brothers, Dan Meyer of Durango, and Kenny Meyer of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Austin and Dillion Werts of Durango; and 17 nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301, or to the Vicki Werts Memorial Fund, c/o Bank of Durango, P.O. Drawer G, Durango, CO 81302.

Muriel Helen Miller

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Southern Baptist Church in Durango for Muriel Helen Miller, a day care provider for 45 years, who died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at her home in Durango. She was 84.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. James Newman will officiate at services. Interment will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born Feb. 27 1916 in Lyons, Colo. She loved children and acted as a grandmother to many area children.

She is survived by her son, Roger Miller of Ignacio; four daughters, Shirley Wooden of Loveland, LaVerne Turnbull of Durango, Connie Craw-Hiner of Ignacio, and Diane Forsythe of Bayfield; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Isabel Kent

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Isabel Kent, a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, who died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville, N.J. She was 68.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Eddy Andary of St. Ignatius Catholic Church will be officiating. Burial will occur at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel, and a Wake will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Charles Kent’s home.

Miss Kent was born Nov. 16, 1931 in Ignacio, and lived there most of her life. She was one of the first Community Health Representatives for the Southern Ute Tribe. While living with her daughters in New Jersey, she attended The First United Methodist Church in Montclair, N.J.

She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Ann Kent of Belleville, N.J., and Betsy Lea Marshall of Newark, N.M.; a son, Charles Kent of Ignacio; two sisters, Ida and Essie Kent of Ignacio; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Judith Anna 'Judy' Smith

Judith Anna ‘Judy’ Smith, a Durango area resident since 1977, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was 58.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Smith was born Dec. 22, 1941, in Olympia, Wash. She married Fred W. Smith on June 28, 1962 at Colorado Springs. She worked for Brennan Oil at the Carbon Junction Texaco location in recent years. Prior to that she was a baker at north City Market. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and was an avid Denver Bronco fan.

She is survived by her husband Fred W. Smith of Redmesa; a son, Jody Smith of Durango; grandchildren, Shantell and Casey Smith of Durango; mother, Willa Gil of Albuquerque; two sisters, Pat Jenkins and Nita Gregory; and two brothers, Frank Gil and Mike Gil.

Maria Angelica "Angie" Marquez

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles for Maria Angelica "Angie" Marquez, a lifelong Arboles resident who died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 at home. She was 58.

The cause of death was undisclosed.

Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. Sunday at the church and recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. Burial will be at Rosa Cemetery in Arboles.

Mrs. Marquez was born March 13, 1942 in Arboles. She was known for her loving hands and meals that she prepared for those around her.

She is survived by her mother, Louise L. Quintana, of Ignacio; seven daughters, Lou Jean Espinosa of Cat Creek, Colo., Mercie Ulibarri of Cedar Hill, N.M., Eleanor Velasquez of Farmington, Edna Gomez of Arboles, June Marquez of Farmington, Geraldine McPherson of Allison, Colo., and Angelica Marquez of Aztec, N.M.; two sisters, Carol Perez of Ignacio, and Gloria Marquez of Bloomfield, NM; former husband, Jose E. "Ed" Marquez of Arboles; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Fernando Head Rael

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Fernando Head Rael, who died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at his home in Ignacio. He was 69.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Robert Griggs will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.

Mr. Rael was born May 30, 1931, in La Posta, Colo., and lived in the area most of his life except for a few years spent in Alaska. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1955.

Mr. Rael had worked as a house painter. He was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. He was an avid hunter and river fisherman.

Survivors include his children, David Rael, Yvonne Phillips, Rebecca Rael Thompson, Corleen Rael and Valentino Vasquez, all of Ignacio, A. Strongbow Rael of Flagstaff, Ariz., Lucinda Rael and Irvin Casias, both of Bayfield, and Toni Rael of Albuquerque, N.M.; brothers, Ignacio Rael of Ignacio, Benito Rael of Valpraiso, Ind., Joseph Earl Rael Sr. of Hesperus, Red Eagle Rael of Chamisal, N.M., Ivan Rael of Albuquerque, N.M., Larry Rael of Penasco, N.M., and Joseph Lujan of Portage, Ind.; sisters, Mabel Tree of Ignacio, Karen Rael of Chamisal, N.M., Alfreda Helm of Whittier, Calif., Florence Carter of Arkansas, Kan., Sharon White Hawk of Espanola, N.M., and Sandra Richardson of Penasco, N.M.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
