John Calvin Bouwkamp
John Calvin Bouwkamp died unexpectedly at his home in Nucla Monday, Nov. 13, 2000. He was 14.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
John was born Dec. 23, 1985. He attended schools in Nucla and Naturita and was a freshman at Nucla High School.
John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the first place winner in the Turkey Shoot in his age division.
John was a finalist two years in a row for the Outstanding Youth Award presented by the Delta Epsilon Sorority. He also received the Director’s Award for outstanding performance in band while playing his French horn. He was also an artist.
Survivors include his parents, Mike and Beverly Bouwkamp; two sisters, Michelle and Kelly of Nucla; grandmother Jean Warnica of Nucla; grandparents John and Phyllis Bouwkamp of Grand Junction, Colo.; two aunts; two uncles; four cousins; and special friend Anthony Bonanno of Durango.
A service was held Nov. 16 at the Union Congregational Church in Nucla. Interment was in the Nucla Cemetery.

Eldon Zwicker
Eldon Zwicker died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at his home in McElmo Canyon. He was 87.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Zwicker was born June 26, 1913, in Sherrard, Ill. He came to Southwest Colorado around 1936.
Mr. Zwicker settled in McElmo Canyon and spent the rest of his life as a cattle rancher. He was featured in a video entitled "Zwicker: An American Cowboy." The video focuses on Mr. Zwicker’s life as a cowboy, his family and their views on the decline of ranching as a way of life.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lila M. Zwicker, in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Doreen, who he married Jan. 26, 1986; three sons, Sheldon, Calvin and Sherman; a stepdaughter, Karen Kingery; and a stepson, Kent Fitzgerald.
A graveside service was held Monday in McElmo Canyon at the Zwicker Family Cemetery.
George Fredrick Fryette Sr.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday for George Fredrick Fryette Sr., who died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was 86.
Mr. Fryette was born Aug. 19. 1914, in Helena, Mont., and was raised there. He married Nancy Jane Veitch Nov. 20, 1948, in Yuma, Ariz.
Mr. Fryette worked for and retired from Sea World as a commercial artist and director of production. He moved to Durango in 1997 to be close to family. He enjoyed bowling, the outdoors and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy J. Fryette, of Durango; two sons, George F. Fryett of Dillon, Mont., and Michael Carey Fryette of Ft. Smith, Ark.; a daughter, Melissa Ann Mosley of Durango; three grandchildren, Mandi Mosley, Marriah Mosley and Cari Beth Mosley, all of Durango; four grandchildren living out of the area; and three great-grandchildren.
Harry V. Bair
A Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4 at Hood Mortuary for Harry V. Bair, a former lawyer, who died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000. He was 96.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at services.
Mr. Bair was born May 28, 1904, in Pittsburgh. At age 13, he went to work at a chain works. Later he held jobs in shipyards, a newspaper pressroom and a railroad yard. Mr. Bair put himself through college at Duquesne University and then through law school at the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from law school in 1928 and practiced law in Pittsburgh for 51 years. He also served as assistant county attorney and chairman of the Board of Viewers of Allegheny County, Pa., judging cases of eminent domain during the redevelopment of downtown Pittsburgh. From May 1942 to January 1946, Mr. Bair served in the U.S. Army, debriefing American soldiers who had been held prisoners of war in the Philippines.
After retiring from his law practice in Pittsburgh in 1979, he moved to Durango with his wife, Jean Viviano Bair. He served as municipal judge in Mancos for several years, donated legal advice to the Agency for the Aging, and worked for the Durango Thanksgiving dinner and Meals-On-Wheels.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Helen H. Bair of Durango; grandchildren James B. Bair of Durango, Becky Bair Hurley of Winnetka, Ill., Michael W. Bair of Brighton, David W. Bair of Silver Spring, Md.; and five great-grandchildren, Danielle and Joshua Bair of Durango, and Matthew, Daniel and Katherine Hurley of Winnetka, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his son, Harry H. Bair, who died in 1995, and his wife, Jean, who died in 1992.

Jerry Wilson Knaggs
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cornerstone Church, 108 W. 31st St., for Jerry Wilson Knaggs, who died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 65.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Shawn O’Reilly will officiate at services. Visitation will be at Hood Mortuary from 2 to 4 p.m. today.
Mr. Knaggs was born Nov. 20, 1935, in Enid, Okla. He married Joy F. Knaggs on July 16, 1961, at Yuma, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife, Joy F. Knaggs of Durango; his mother, Thada Inez Knaggs of Durango; son Mitch Knaggs of Durango, daughter Sherri Gifford of Durango, daughter Christy Smith of Durango, daughter Kim Coufal of Farmington, N.M.; a sister, Anita Shephard of Enid; 12 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Mexico Mission Children’s Fund, C/O Cornerstone Church, 108 W. 31st St., Durango, CO 81301. This organization funds Christian mission work in Mexico.
Leucian H. McEwen
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Farmington for Leucian H. McEwen, a longtime electric company employee, who died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Farmington from a lengthy illness. He was 79.
Mike Copeland will officiate at services.
Mr. McEwen was born Oct. 28, 1921 in Aspermont, Texas. He married Maxine Mobley in 1946 in Farmington.
Mr. McEwen moved to Bayfield in 1937 and Farmington in 1994. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Western Colorado Power for about 20 years and then at La Plata Electric Association until he retired. He was involved with Colorado Mounted Rangers, Bayfield Lions Club and Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine McEwen of Farmington; two sons, Larry McEwen of Rockport, Texas, and Randy McEwen of Aztec; a daughter, Kathleen Bowman of Walla Walla, Wash.; two sisters, Laverne Klusman of Ignacio and Doris Curtis of Batesville, Ark.; six grandchildren; and, four great-grandchildren.

Clifford H. Evensen
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Durango Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Clifford H. Evensen, a lifelong resident of Durango, who died Nov. 22, 2000, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 88.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary.
Mr. Evensen was born Feb. 28, 1912, in Breen. He married Elma E. Peine on June 8, 1937 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Evensen was active as a religious leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as branch president, bishop, seminary instructor, and for 33 years was the patriarch of both the Young and Durango stakes. He was also a member of the Young Stake Presidency.
Mr. Evensen, a graduate of Durango High School and the American University of Commerce, worked for many years at Morehart Chevrolet-Oldsmobile as an accountant and office manager.
Mr. Evensen is survived by his wife, Elma, of Durango; two sons, Ronald Evensen, of Provo, Utah, and Val Evensen, of Durango; two daughters, Elaine Bard, of Randlett, Utah, and Karen Christensen of Farmington, N.M.; a brother, Glenn Evensen, of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Agda Remple, of Stockton, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Louise J. Bolen
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Louise J. Bolen, an award-winning volunteer, who died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at home in Durango. She was 81.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Father Mike McLeary will officiate. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.
Mrs. Bolen was born April 2, 1919, in Chicago. She married Oscar C. Bolen in 1942 in Chicago.
Mrs. Bolen moved to Pagosa Springs in 1975, and then moved to Santa Fe, N.M., in 1980, where she was active in the Opera Guild, the Chamber of Commerce and St. Francis Cathedral Choir. She won Volunteer of the Year and The Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for her volunteer work with the public library. Mrs. Bolen loved world travel, music and the arts.
Mrs. Bolen was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Bolen, in 1979.
She is survived by a son, Jim Bolen of Durango; a daughter, Sharon Bolen of Princeton, N.J.; a sister, Rose Berry of Chicago; a grandson, Sean M. Bolen of Silver City, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
