Marguerite E. Culhane

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church for Marguerite E. Culhane, a former Bayfield resident, who died Sunday, July 2, 2000 in Yucaipa, Calif., She was 90.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Culhane was born Dec. 18, 1909, in Durango. She married Virl Davenport in 1933. He died in 1946. They had two children. She married Vernon Culhane in 1950.

Mrs. Culhane lived in Durango and Bayfield most of her life, and she was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Annette Lutters of Calimesa, Calif.; her son, Danny Culhane of Durango; three brothers, Bill Hiner and Kenneth Hiner of Durango, and Albert Hiner of San Diego; two sisters, Marian Webber of Bloomfield, N.M., and Lillian Davis of Durango; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Culhane was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Culhane; and her son, Bill Davenport.

Kara L. Pearson

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Steed-Todd Chapel in Clovis, N.M., for Kara L. Pearson, a Durango paralegal, who died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at San Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington from leukemia. She was 32.

The Rev. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate at services. Cremation has taken place.

Ms. Pearson was born June 3, 1968, in El Paso, Texas.

She was a 1986 graduate of Clovis High School and was active in volleyball and basketball. She was on the honor roll throughout her school years and was on the dean’s honor roll at New Mexico State University in 1987. She worked as a paralegal at Crane and Tejada Law Firm in Durango prior to her illness. At the time of her death, she was awaiting a donor match for a bone-marrow transplant.

She is survived by her parents, Bobbie and Swede Johnson of Clovis, N.M., and Tony and Anna Pearson of Hobbs, N.M.; her brother, Kevin Pearson of Albuquerque; two grandmothers, one grandfather; one uncle; one aunt; and two cousins.

Contributions may be made to Connelly Hospitality House, 710 S. Lake, Farmington, N.M., 87401, or to a favorite charity in Ms. Pearson’s name.

Wayne M. Moorehead

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Wayne M. Moorehead, who died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at his home in Durango due to heart disease. He was 84.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mr. Moorehead was born March 4, 1916, in Tuscola, Ill. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and moved to Durango in 1953.

Mr. Moorehead worked at Mercy Hospital as a lab technician for three years. He married Barbara L. Schultz in 1956 in Durango.

Mr. Moorehead first went to work at KIUP in 1957. He also was a reporter for The Durango Herald around that same period of time and he retired from the Herald in 1969.

Mr. Moorehead was best known for his knowledge and love of jazz. He loved animals and was very active in the La Plata County Humane Society.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Moorehead of Durango; three sons, Mark Moorehead of Colorado Springs, Jeff Moorehead of San Diego, Calif., and Kurt Moorehead of Arvada, Colo.; and a nephew, Wayne Parker of Burlington, Vt.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302 or Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Veronica Phelps

Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Veronica Phelps, who died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at her home in Aztec, N.M. She was 65.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Thursday at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

Mrs. Phelps was born Jan. 27, 1935, in Durango and was a lifelong resident of the area.

She married Carl R. Phelps on Aug. 4, 1952, in Aztec.

Mrs. Phelps was active with the county fair board and 4-H Clubs.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Phelps of Aztec; a daughter, Karla Phelps of Bloomfield, N.M.; a brother, Bill Rutledge of Cortez; two sisters, Margaret Klatt of Durango and Virginia Bectholt of Denver, Colo.; and four grandchildren, Tarah, Travis, James and Brian.

Irma Arline Portner

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Durango for Irma Arline Portner, who died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Durango. She was 93.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Kevin Karle will officiate.

Mrs. Portner was born April 1, 1907, in Corydon, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from high school there. On April 29, 1931, she married Freelin Martin Portner in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Portner was a resident of Durango for 24 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, where she worked as a missionary since 1952.

Mrs. Portner enjoyed singing, reading, knitting, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. While attending high school, she was the senior class vice president and performed in leading roles in the plays. While the family resided in Hawaii, Mrs. Portner was president of the P.T.A.

Survivors include her husband, Freelin Martin Portner of Durango; a son, Jack Portner of Loomis, Calif.; four daughters, Shirley Edwards of Castlerock, Wash., Virginia "Ginny" Butler of Chula Vista, Calif., Lani Marie Munsee of Durango and Sandra Munsee of Woods Cross, Utah; a sister, Fern Sanders of Kirksville, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Angeline ‘Angie’ Henrietta Ellsworth

A funeral was held Aug. 23 at the John M. Ireland Chapel in Moore, Okla., for Angeline Henrietta Ellsworth, who died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Oklahoma from a long illness. She was 84.

The John M. Ireland Funeral Home and Chapel officiated at services. Burial was at McLoud Cemetery.

Mrs. Ellsworth was born Feb. 14, 1916 in McLoud, Okla. She married C.R. Ellsworth, manager of Durango Chamber of Commerce from 1970-1977, in 1936.

Mrs. Ellsworth was a piano student and teacher. She also became an active member, officer and judge of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She loved travel and photography.

She is survived by her husband, C.R., of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Helen Lynne Ellison, of Oklahoma City; a grandson, Paul Ellison, of Edmond, Okla.; and, several relatives.

Mary A. Mason

A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Mary A. Mason, who died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in Kingwood, Texas, as a result of congestive heart failure. She was 85.

A Rosary service will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Creede Cemetery in Creede, Colo.

Mrs. Mason was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Creede, Colo. For more than 60 years, she lived in Durango where her husband, Walter C. Mason, was an elementary school teacher.

Mrs. Mason is survived by her husband, Walter C. Mason of Kingwood, Texas; a daughter, Mary Margaret Dunbar of Kingwood, Texas; a son, Thomas Mason of Aurora, Colo.; and two grandchildren, Christopher Dunbar of Charleston, S.C., and Michael Dunbar of Kingwood, Texas.

Anne Janison

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Rose Hill Cemetery in Denver for Anne Janison, who died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, in Aurora, Colo. She was 80.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Janison was born Jan. 1, 1920. She was a resident of Denver and was a former resident of Durango.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving Janison.

Mrs. Janison is survived by her brother, Marvin Samuel, and many nieces and nephews.
