Doris Wallace Robey
Doris Wallace Robey died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 90.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Robey was born Feb. 25, 1910, in Maryville, Mo., and was a resident there for 89 years.
She married Donald L. Robey. He preceded her in death in 1978.
Mrs. Robey was a lifelong and active member of the First Christian Church in Maryville. She graduated from Maryville High School in 1927 and attended Northwest Missouri State. She was active in numerous church and community organizations. She also worked with the reading programs in grade schools and participating in many Lions events with her husband, Donald.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie Trautmann of Durango; her son, Jerry L. Robey of Chehalis, Wash.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
No services are planned at this time.
Earl Emmerson Wood
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holt Funeral Home in Canon City, Colo., for Earl Emmerson Wood, who died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 93.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Wood was born March 12, 1907, in the stone house in the Hot Springs Addition in Canon City, Colo. He lived all of his life in Hot Springs Addition, except for the period of time he resided in nursing homes.
Mr. Wood graduated from Canon City High School in 1925 and married Ollie Gertrude Wilson June 28, 1930, in Pueblo, Colo. During the early years of his marriage, Mr. Wood worked as a gardener in the summer months and worked at several gold mines and as a carpenter in the winters. He also worked at local Canon City movie theaters. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped build fences in the Wet Mountains of Fremont County.
Mr. Wood was a member of the Centennial State Carpenters’ Union and the Canon City National Guard. He was a well-known gardener in the Canon City area and an avid reader.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie; and two sons, Dwight and Gary.
Survivors include a son, Wayne F. Wood Sr. of Colorado; two daughters, Sandra Clark of California and Evelyn Phillips of Arkansas; a sister, Marine McCormick of Santa Fe, N.M.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canon City Library in Mr. Wood’s name.
Jewell Mitchell
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, 2000, at First United Methodist Church in Kearney, Neb., for Jewell "Judy" Mitchell, a former Bayfield teacher who died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was 80.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Ron Roemmich officiated at the services.
Mrs. Mitchell was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Cross Timbers, Mo. She married Howard H. Mitchell on June 12, 1943, in Las Vegas, N.M.
She graduated from Bayfield High School in 1938 and from Fort Lewis College. She taught public school in Bayfield and later did graduate work at Colorado State College.
Mrs. Mitchell and her husband lived in Monte Vista, Colo., Omaha, Denver and Cozad, Neb., before moving to El Charmin Lake near Gibbon, Neb., where they lived for 12 years.
She was the office manager at her husband’s veterinary clinic, a member of the church in Kearney and a Life Master bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Judith Mays of Overland Park, Kan., and Vicki Meyer of Fairport, N.Y.; one son, Howard Lincoln; her mother, Lillie Hickman of Bayfield; two brothers, Edison Hickman of Bayfield, and Samuel Hickman of Denver; two sisters, Joanne McCoy, and Sharon Hickman of Bayfield; and, seven grandchildren.
Fern Adeline McCormick
Services were held in Alaska for Fern Adeline McCormick, a former Durango resident, who died Saturday, July 8, 2000, in Juneau, Alaska. She was 90.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. McCormick was born May 13, 1910, in Hardy, Neb.
Mrs. McCormick earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and moved to Durango in the 1940s to teach art in the schools. She received a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Denver.
She was a promoter of the arts and had an art studio in her home where she taught for many years. She also taught art at the 55+ Center and volunteered to teach art classes in the grade schools.
Mrs. McCormick was a member of the Durango Art Guild and was very active in organizing local art shows. She also wrote poetry and an art manual for teachers. She enjoyed travel, reading, and playing bridge.
She donated to charities on a regular basis and also created a corporation for the purposes of medical research into alcoholism.
Mrs. McCormick was preceded in death by her husband, William, and a sister, Alyce Mae.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Hargraves of Juneau, Alaska.; one son, Leo McCormick of Newcomb, N.M.; two grandchildren, Coe Hargraves of Boulder, and Amber Hargraves of Denver; and, five nieces and nephews.

Daniel Gabriel Ribera
Funeral services will be noon Saturday at the San Juan Catholic Church in Pagosa Junction for Sgt. Daniel Gabriel Ribera, a marine for more than four years, who died Friday, July 14, 2000 in San Angelo, Texas from a car accident. He was 25.
Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the San Juan Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Rosa Cemetery
following the funeral services.
Mr. Ribera was born March 21, 1975, in Alamagordo, N.M. He graduated from Tracy Area High School in Minnesota in 1993.
Mr. Ribera was an avid athlete while in high school and was involved in various activities throughout his life.
He attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque for a year and then transferred for two years to Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn.
Mr. Ribera enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1996 and was an avionics specialist. He recently re-enlisted and was attending Special Intelligence School at Goodfellow Air Force Base at the time of his death.
While in the Marines Ribera earned several awards, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Pistol Sharp Shooter badge.
He is survived by his mother, Linda L. Ribera of Tracy, Minn.; his father, Dan Ribera of Caracas, Colo.; one sister, Monica Ribera of Albuquerque; three grandparents, Mauricio and Maxine Ribera of Archuleta County, and Evelyn Serreyn of Marshal, Minn.; and several aunts and uncles.
Charles Ward Oglesby
Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Frontier Baptist Church, 2061 County Road 225, for Charles Ward Oglesby, a Durango resident who died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. He was 61.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Pastor Peter Reitz and Jerry Brush will officiate at services. Internment will follow at the Florida Cemetery.
Mr. Oglesby retired from the U.S. Navy as a teacher in electronics. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, Ill., for six years, and in Florida for three years. He was a member of the Florida Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Charles Ward Oglesby Jr. of Durango, and Jeff Oglesby of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Michelle (Bernard) Dunn of Durango, Terri Hantman of London, and Denise Oglesby of Chicago; one sister, Cora (Don) Smith of Chicago; and nine grandchildren.
Sam Ewell Callaway
Sam Ewell Callaway, a former Durango physician, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 86.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
No funeral services are planned. There will be cremation.
Dr. Callaway was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Mexia, Texas. He married Edith Callaway on March 23, 1943, at Galveston, Texas.
Dr. Callaway had a family practice in Durango from 1946 to 1988. He was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge. He served in the Navy during World War II in a medical corps in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his wife, Edith "Gypsy" of Durango; two sons, David Callaway of Tigard, Ore., and Roger Callaway of Matthews, N.C.; one brother, James Callaway of Carlsbad, N.M.; and, numerous nieces and nephews.
