Willis K. 'Will' Fjerstad

A memorial wake will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Needles Country Store for Willis K. "Will" Fjerstad, who died at his home Friday, April 28, 2000, from complications associated with cancer. He was 62.

Mr. Fjerstad was born May 9, 1937, in Red Wing, Minn. He attended the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, also to play football, and served from 1957 to 1959. After discharge, he chose from many scholarship offers to attend the University of New Mexico. He met his wife, Eileen, at UNM, and they married April 7, 1961.

After living in Albuquerque and Denver, the family moved to Durango where they resided for two years with Mr. Fjerstad working for Telluride Iron Works. The Fjerstads then lived in Australia for two years. Upon leaving Australia, the family traveled through Southeast Asia and the Middle East with backpacks for eight months.

After returning to the United States, the Fjerstads purchased Needles Country Store and have owned and operated the store for the past 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen; a son, Michael of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Barbara Brett of the Ignacio area; a sister, Jane Schafer of Red Wing, Minn.; two grandchildren, Tegan and Kaden of Virginia Beach, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Columbine Children’s Fund of Purgatory, c/o Chris Wing, 48475 U.S. Highway 550 north, Durango, CO 81301.

Glenn Mair Jr.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, Ariz., for Glenn Mair Jr., who died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., after a lengthy illness. He was 79.

Mr. Mair was born March 29, 1921, in Antonio, Colo. He met his wife, Jarroldine, after returning from World War II in 1945, and they married Dec. 24, 1945, in Durango.

Mr. Mair worked primarily for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1976 with 31 years of government service. In Durango, he was active with the National Association of Letter Carriers and First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jarroldine; a daughter, Gladys; three sons, Jim, Jerry and Gary; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Randall L. Brekken

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Valley Evangelical Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Ariz., for Randall L. Brekken, a Durango resident, who died Sunday, July 2, 2000 from a car accident. He was 24.

The Rev. Fred Casmer will officiate.

Mr. Brekken was born May 17, 1976, in Stoughton, Wis. He was baptized at Western Koshkonong Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove, Wis. He was confirmed at Christ the Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mr. Brekken was a 1994 graduate of Horizon High School in Phoenix, Ariz. He played basketball at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., and at Fort Lewis College in Durango. He graduated from Fort Lewis College in April 2000.

Mr. Brekken was employed as general manager of Econo Lodge in Durango.

Survivors include his mother, Marcia Brekken of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Nathan Brekken and Jared Brekken, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Matthew Brekken of Boston, Mass.; and, two nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Paradise Valley Lutheran Preschool or Building Fund, 14845 N. 40th St., Phoenix, AZ 85032.

Hazel Avis Ottaway

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Hazel Avis Ottaway, who died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 82.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. John Richardson will officiate. There will be cremation following the service, and her ashes will be buried at Crestview Cemetery next to her husband.

Mrs. Ottaway was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Pagosa Springs. She graduated from Pagosa Springs High School.

She married Frank M. Ottaway May 18, 1939, in Pagosa Springs. They moved to Durango in 1942. Her husband preceded her in death Dec. 9, 1996.

Mrs. Ottaway worked many jobs in Durango and retired from the La Plata County Assessor's office. After retirement, she sewed blankets and lap robes for local projects.

She is survived by many nephews and nieces.

Robert E. "Bob" Lee

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Redmesa, Colo., for Robert E. "Bob" Lee, a longtime Hesperus resident, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 79.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will be at Redmesa Cemetery.

Mr. Lee was born November 15, 1920, in Paradox, Colo., before moving to Hesperus in 1959.

Mr. Lee served in the U.S., Navy during World War II and was on two ships which sank -- the Lexington and the Block Island. He and his wife lived all over the world. He worked at many of the power plants in the Southwest U.S. He was an avid rock collector.

He is survived by his wife, Blanch, of Hesperus; two sons, Robert Eric Lee of Tucson, Ariz., and Alan K. Lee of Redmesa, Colo.; three daughters, Linda Colson of Aledo, Texas, Annett Decker of Cortez, Colo., and Sheila Lee of Lubbock, Texas; five brothers; two sisters; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

Enrique Saloma

A memorial Mass will be at noon Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Enrique Saloma, who died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in Durango in a car accident on County Road 211. He was 32.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate.

Mr. Saloma was born Nov. 6, 1967, in Zacatecas, Mexico. He lived in Durango for the last 10 months.

Mr. Saloma was the maintenance supervisor at the Victorian Millworks for approximately 10 months. He and his family lived in Los Angeles, Calif., from 1987 to 1999 when they relocated to Durango.

Mr. Saloma became a United States citizen this year.

Survivors include his wife, Blanca; his mother, Maria Guadalupe Letechipia Munez of Mexico; a son, Abraham Saloma of Durango; two daughters, Elizabeth Saloma and Jharline Saloma, both of Durango; two sisters, Alicia Saloma de Uribe and Monica Saloma, both of Mexico; and three brothers, Victor Saloma, Mario Saloma and Alfredo Saloma, all of Mexico.

Patricia Joan
McNamara Huntington

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Patricia Joan McNamara Huntington, who died of natural causes Tuesday, July 25, 2000, in Wichita, Kan. She was 71.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.

Mrs. Huntington was born Dec. 16, 1928, in Durango. She married Conrad Huntington Nov. 14, 1950, in Durango.

Mrs. Huntington was a homemaker. She was a resident of Hesperus.

Survivors include her husband, Conrad Huntington of Hesperus; a son, Joaquin Huntington of Hesperus; three daughters, Randy Bader of Kim, Colo., Sandy McElreath of Cimarron, Kan., and Connie Riddle-Baber of Benton, Kan.; a brother, James McNamara of Grand Junction, Colo.; and, five grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Patrick Luter Memorial Cancer Center, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Col. Orin Shelby
‘Rich’ Richardson

Col. Orin Shelby "Rich" Richardson died of natural causes Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in an Albuquerque Palliative Care facility. He was 91.

Col. Richardson was born Feb. 14, 1909, in Oklahoma. He retired in 1964 after 33 years in the Air Force.

Col. Richardson was an owner of the Wildorado Ranch and part-time resident of Durango for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Gene; two daughters, Jeri Burkett of Durango and Vicki Koger of Osklaoosa, Iowa; four grandchildren, Evan Burkett, Kathryn Burkett White, Daniella Koger and Caleb Koger; and, two great-grandchildren.

A private ceremony and burial will be held at the family ranch near Durango.
