Norman Arthur Olson
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Greenmount Cemetery
for Norman Arthur Olson, who died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at his home in Ignacio. He was 47.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Olson was born May 17, 1952, in Durango. He lived in Ignacio all of his life.
Mr. Olson was a graduate of Ignacio High School. He obtained his teaching certificate at Fort Lewis College and his master’s degree at Western New Mexico University. He taught for two years in Gallup, N.M., and also at Pueblo Community College in Durango.
Mr. Olson was a member of the Ignacio Public School board.
At the time of his death, he was a cashier at Wal-Mart in Durango.
He is survived by his mother, Fern M. Olson; two brothers, Chris Olson and Lynn Olson, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; two nieces, several cousins and an uncle, Russell Vesper of Lordsburg, N.M.
Walter Clark Wood
Walter Clark Wood, formerly of Durango, died of a heart attack Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Yuma, Ariz. He was 58.
Mr. Wood was born April 22, 1941, in Mesa, Ariz. He grew up in Durango.
After graduating from Durango High School in 1959, Mr. Wood enlisted in the Navy. He served in Vietnam and Guam.
He retired after 20 years as an electronic technician.
Mr. Wood then went into civil service for the Marines for 17 years. Because of ill health, he moved to Yuma, Ariz., in 1999.
Mr. Wood was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Durango.
Survivors include his parents, J.C. and Marie Wood of Durango; one brother, Eugene Wood of Florida; four nephews, Jason, Micheal, James and Mathew, all of Florida; four aunts, Rose Bryant, Lillie Barrett and Marjorie Campbell, all of Colorado, and Wanda Allen of Idaho; one uncle, Robert Lee of Colorado; and numerous cousins.
Mr. Wood was buried in the military cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
A family memorial service in Durango is pending.
Ruth Bertha Brinker Muth
Ruth Bertha Brinker Muth died Saturday, May 13, 2000, in Durango. She was 98.
Mrs. Muth was born March 22, 1902, in Denver. She graduated from Denver University, and was a member of Phi Beta Phi Sorority.
Mrs. Muth taught at many schools in Denver and Phoenix, Ariz., since she was 20. Her teaching career spanned more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1972.
Survivors include her son, Jerry J. Muth of Durango; her daughter, Jo Ann Niles of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time.
Barbara Mae Evans
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Greenmount Cemetery
for Barbara Mae Evans, a lifelong teacher, who died Thursday May 11, 2000, in Durango after a lengthy illness. She was 84.
Mrs. Evans was born Sept. 13, 1915 in Arriola, Colo., before moving to Durango in 1946. She married Robert Roy Evans on May 7, 1943 in Aztec, N.M.
Mrs. Evans began her teaching career at age 19 at McPhee School teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. She attended college at the old Fort Lewis campus for two years and obtained a bachelor’s degree at Western State College in 1956 and her master’s degree at Adams State College in 1970. She and her husband had their only child, Diana, in 1946.
She began teaching at Park Elementary School in 1946 where she taught for 30 years. Her last eight years of teaching were spent at Mason Elementary school teaching special education students.
Mrs. Evans retired in 1979. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (a retired teacher’s association) in Durango. She and her husband joined the Durango Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1948.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana of Mancos; three grandsons, Radburn Robb of Satellite Beach, Fla., Randon Robb of Mancos, and Raegan Robb of Fort Collins; one grandaughter, Amanda Carey, of Colorado Springs; one brother, Willard Bishop, of Cortez; three sisters, Minnie Ashby, of Albuquerque, Nelta Wilson, of Aurora, and Mrs. Robert "Pearl" Bishop, of Arriola, Colo.; and, five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.
Robert Eugene Patcheck
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for Robert Eugene Patcheck, a rancher, who died Friday, May 12, 2000, at his home in Mancos. He was 67.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Timothy Evers will be officiating at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mr. Patcheck was born Oct. 4, 1932, at the family homestead in Hesperus. He was a rancher for all of his adult life. He was road and bridge supervisor for La Plata County for many years.
Mr. Patcheck was a member and former Elder of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He received the Western Heritage Award in 1997. He was president of the La Plata River and Cherry Creek Ditch Co., and a longtime member of the Colorado Cattlemans Association.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia, of Hesperus; two daughters, Cathie Wilson of Boise, Idaho., and Cindy Morgan of Austin, Texas; two sons, Robert Renee of Bloomfield, and Michael Patcheck of Mancos; a sister, Elaine Belger of Durango; a brother, Wally Patcheck of Mancos; and six grandchildren, Patrick and Kevin Wilson, Katie Morgan, and Nona, Mitchell and Baylen Patcheck.

Paul Richard Tudor
Memorial services will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Christ the King Lutheran Church for Paul Richard Tudor, who died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 74. The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. John Knutson will officiate. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mr. Tudor was born June 30, 1925, in Enid, Okla. He married Roberta Adele Andersen, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Tudor was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. He lived in Australia from 1948 to 1960 working in oil exploration and refining. He moved to Durango in 1975 and worked for La Plata County until his retirement.
Survivors include four children, Reg Tudor, Michael Paine and Kerry Feldman, all of Canberra, Australia, and Peter Tudor Paine of Ainslic, Australia; 12 grandchildren, a brother, Perry Tudor of Peoria, Il.l; and two sisters, Lois Halferty of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Mary White of Sacramento, Calif.

John L. Hiller
A Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Columba Catholic Church for John L. Hiller, an Oklahoma retiree in Durango, who died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 64.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Burial will be next week at Calvary Cemetery
in Tulsa, Okla.
Mr. Hiller was born Dec. 18, 1935, in St. Louis, Mo. He married Mary Ann Perry on Feb. 11, 1961, at St. Louis.
Mr. Hiller retired from Occidental Petroleum Corporation in Tulsa, Okla., and moved to Colorado seven years ago. He was a member and past president of both the Southwest Petroleum Credit Association and International Petroleum Credit Association.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of Durango; a daughter, Therese Ann Star, of Eufaula, Okla.; two sons, William F. Hiller and Paul G. Hiller, of Tulsa, Okla.; and, several nieces and nephews.

Michael James Stranich
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Michael James Stranich, who died Friday, May 5, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 84.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Stranich was born Oct. 3, 1915, in New Orleans, La. He married Josephine Garrett in 1963 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Mr. Stranich served in the Army during World War II. He worked for the Southern Ute Tribe. He was a longtime resident of Bayfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine, and his step-daughter, Sherell Hays.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Stranich Taylor of Santa Maria, Calif.; four grandchildren, James Stranich Taylor of Santa Maria, Calif., Allison Hooper of Gallup, N.M., Jocelyn Chilvers of Denver and Priscilla Hays of Durango; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302.
The service was previously scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Hood Mortuary.
