Joseph N. Valencia

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio for Joseph N. Valencia, a former miner in Silverton and Telluride, who died Friday, March 31, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 86.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at services. Burial will be at Ignacio Cemetery in Ignacio. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

Mr. Valencia was born March 8, 1914, in Blanco, N.M. He married Ruflia Jaques. He mined and worked in construction as a high scaler for dam building.

He is survived by seven sons, Joe Valencia of Ignacio, Manuel Valencia of Rifle, Sal Valencia of Alsea, Ore., Cecil Valencia of Killeen, Texas, Alex, Steve and Galen Valencia of Fruita; two daughters, Alice Smith of Grand Junction and Leora Valencia of Fruita; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruflia Valencia.

Dennis Lucero

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles for Dennis Lucero, a lifetime resident of the area who died at his Bayfield home Tuesday, June 1, 2000. He was 38. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. John Bowe will officiate. Burial will be at the Rosa Cemetery. A Rosary service will be 7 p.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio.

Mr. Lucero was born Feb. 20, 1962, in Durango. He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1980. He was active in youth sports and coached baseball and basketball. Mr. Lucero was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed camping. He worked as a receiving clerk at Mercy Medical Center.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Phyllis Lucero. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Tucson, of Bayfield; daughter, Jamie Lucero of Bayfield; stepchildren, Jake and Misty Tucson of Bayfield; brothers and sisters, Delfin Lucero, Tomas Lucero, Isaac Lucero and Matt DeKay of Farmington, N.M.; Marie Lucero and Neoma Quintana of Ignacio, Yvonne Martinez of Alamosa, Colo.; Denise Lucero of Aztec, N.M.; Michelle Anthony of Denver; Adrian Lucero of Pojoaque, N.M.; and Vince Maribal of Phoenix.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy; 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Jacqueline Joyce Huxley

A public memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Squire Court Hospitality Center in Clackamas, Ore., for Jacqueline Joyce Huxley, who died Tuesday, May 30, 2000 in Clackamas. She was 63. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Huxley was born June 13, 1936, in Illinois. She married William H. Huxley on Oct. 25, 1952, and she lived in Palm Desert, Calif., from 1963 until 1996, when she moved to Oregon. Mrs. Huxley was a day-care provider and owned her own day-care center.

She is survived by four sons, Richard Huxley of Bayfield; William Huxley III of Portland, Ore.; Dennis Huxley of Goldendale, Wash.; and Clinton Huxley of Clackamas, Ore.; two daughters, Fonda Keiper of Palm Desert, Calif., and Laura Martin of Palm Springs, Calif.; a sister, Patricia King of California; and 10 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, William, who died May 27, 1994.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Williamette Falls Hospice.

Sebastian Filippone

Sebastian Filippone died Friday, June 2, 2000, in his home in the North Animas Valley. No memorial services are planned. He was 73. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Filippone was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1927. He served in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. After he was discharged from the Navy he enrolled in Brooklyn College and earned his bachelor of arts degree. In 1950 he began graduate courses in journalism at the University of Missouri.

Mr. Filippone married Betty Mitchell in Manchester, Mo., in June 1952. He worked as a reporter, sports editor, copy editor and city editor for newspapers and information services in the South, Midwest and mid-Atlantic states. He taught journalism at Southern Illinois University.

Mr. Filippone is survived by his wife; his sons, John and Tim Filippone of Basalt, Colo.; his sister, Lydia Brancato, of Falls Church, Va.; a niece and four nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Mercy; 375 East Park Ave.; Durango, CO 81301.

Barbara Lee Cavender

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Garden of Blessed Hope at Greenlawn Cemetery in Williamsport, Md., for Barbara Lee Cavender, a San Juan College graduate, who died Tuesday, May 16, 2000 in Flagstaff, Ariz. She was 42.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Cavender was born February 4, 1958, in Hagerstown, Md.

She received an AAS in Legal Assistant in May 1997 and an associate of liberal arts degree in May 1999 from San Juan College in Farmington. She was a paralegal.

She is survived by one daughter, Jessie Deal; two sons, Bryan Deal and Kevin Deal; three sisters, Pat Bailey, Brenda Clever, and Deborah Jordan; and one brother, Kenneth Robert Cavender, II.

Misty Ann Zelhart

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Misty Ann Zelhart, a local Durango resident, who died Saturday, May 20, 2000, at her home in Durango. She was 26.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Rev. J.W. Carlile will officiate at services. There will be a cremation at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Miss Zelhart was born Sept. 2, 1973 in Durango. She lived in Durango the majority of her life, and was a caregiver for her grandmother.

She is survived by her father, Richard Zelhart, of Durango; her mother, Janet Holt, of Durango; three brothers, Allen Zelhart, of Chandler, Ariz., Jeff Zelhart of Louisburg, Kan., and Mark Zelhart of Farmington, N.M.; one sister, Dawn Zelhart, of Durango; her grandmother, Nellie Zelhart, of Durango; and, several nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to the Southwest Colorado Mental Health Center, P.O. Box 1328, Durango, CO, 81302.

Kenneth Wayne Pricer

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Aztec Cemetery for Kenneth Wayne Pricer, who died Friday, May 19, 2000, at his home in Aztec, N.M., following a short illness. He was 71.

Viewing will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Cope Memorial Chapel in Aztec.

Mr. Pricer was born Dec. 23, 1928. He lived in Durango for a number of years.

Mr. Pricer delivered milk from Creamland Dairies in Durango to surrounding areas and schools for several years. He then moved to Aztec and bought the Handy Bait Shop, which he owned and operated until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Pricer; three daughters, Barbara Hensley of Bloomfield, N.M., Glenda Boeticher of Las Cruces, N.M., and Irene Tole of California; a brother, Doyle of California; five step-children, Jerry and Lora McCaw, Larry and Renee Hronich and Loretta Watson and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frank Campbell

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Frank Campbell, a teacher, who died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 89.

Joe Wolcott will officiate at services. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mr. Campbell was born Nov. 15, 1910, in Richmond, Mo. He was a graduate of Northwest Missouri Teachers College. He began his teaching career in Stanberra, Mo., and continued in Center, Colo. He moved to Durango in 1942 and taught with School District 9-R for 32 years.

Mr. Campbell was a member of the Durango Masonic and Elks Lodges. He was heavily involved with the Shriners medical charities for children and circus fund-raising. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.

His is survived by his wife, Darlene Brinley-Campbell, of Durango; a son, Kyle Campbell of Arlington Heights, Ill.; three sisters, Betty Lovell of Riverside, Calif., Birdie Wilson of Placerville, Calif., and Dorothy Mitchell of Riverside, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Gregory Campbell of Chicago, Ill., and Kristen Campbell of Schaumberg, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine "Jo" Campbell.

Earl L. Daniels

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Assembly of God in Grand Junction, Colo., for Earl L. Daniels, who died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Junction. He was 74.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Daniels, formerly of Durango, was a resident of Palisade, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Retha Daniels of Palisade, Colo.; a son, Rodney Cozby of Wampsville, N.Y.; three daughters, Shannon Mitchell of Clayton, N.M., Darlene Morris of Farmington, N.M., and Brenda Kennedy of Kerrville, Texas; and several grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 578, Grand Junction, CO 81502.

Clovis Walton Dixon

Funeral services were held for Clovis Walton Dixon, a former Durango resident, who died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, in Fontana, Calif., of complications from a heart attack. He was 69.

Mr. Dixon was a native of Glenwood, Ark., who lived in Durango for 10 years from 1969-1979. He and his wife, Joan, owned B & F Equipment & Supply on Main Avenue.

He was a self-employed businessman his entire life and served in the U.S. Army and the Air Force.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Joan, of Pomona, Calif.; two sons, Donald W. Dixon, of Bellflower, Calif., and Scott W. Dixon, of Pomona, Calif.; two daughters, Paula Cleveland of Lees Summit, Mo., and Christina Carter of East Highland, Calif.; one sister, Sara Jane Buckelew, of Harrisburg, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and, seven great-grandchildren.
