Toby L. Scarpella
Toby L. Scarpella died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in a kayaking accident on Canyon Creek in Washington. He was 24.
Mr. Scarpella was born April 12, 1975, in Fort Collins, Colo. He graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 1993 and from Fort Lewis College in 1999 with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish. He also attended a year of study at the University of Guadalahara and completed studies in Mexico. He moved to Durango in 1994.
Mr. Scarpella was employed by Four Corners River Sports as a kayak instructor.
He was an expert in kayaking. He spent a lot of time traveling in Mexico. He played varsity soccer at Rocky Mountain High School and recreational soccer in Mexico.
Survivors include his parents, Mick and Judy Scarpella of Fort Collins, Colo., two brothers, Todd Scarpella of Fort Collins and Brian Scarpella of Durango; his grandmother, Marty Scarpella of Fort Collins and his grandparents, Paul and Jean Kipping of Fort Collins.
Services were held March 15 at Timberline Church in Fort Collins.

Jose Pablo Silva
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Jose Pablo Silva, a farmer and road construction worker, who died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at his home in Durango from a lengthy illness. He was 84.
The Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate. Recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m., Saturday and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary.
Mr. Silva was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Ignacio. He married Azucena M. Barry on Oct. 28, 1949, in Aztec.
He was a farmer in Missouri Center for several years and worked for the Southern Ute Tribe managing sheep operations. He also helped build Ignacio High School and worked for Desert Livestock Co. in Salt Lake, Utah, where he managed more than 100 employees and over 25,000 sheep. Mr. Silva was a farmer and rancher in La Piedra and operated a roadside cafe and gas station on the Piedra River on U.S. Highway 160.
He also worked on road construction throughout La Plata and Archuleta counties. Mr. Silva helped build the Million Dollar Highway between Durango and Silverton. Mr. Silva and his family moved to Durango in 1966, and he continued to work in road construction before working for The Durango Herald as a building maintenance man for about 20 years. He also performed building maintenance for the First Presbyterian Church in Durango for approximately 12 years.
He is survived by his wife, Azucena; two sons, U.S. Navy Ret. Baldamar Silva, of San Pedro, Calif., and USAF Ret. Leonard Silva, of San Antonio, Texas; four daughters, Martha Schackleford, of Prescott, Ariz., Ramona G. Polk, of Montgomery Ala., and Paula and Loretta Silva, of Durango; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Chriseldo Silva of Chimney Rock, in 1959.
Barbara L. Waters
Private services are planned for Barbara L. Waters, a longtime Durango resident, who died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, in Durango from an extended illness. She was 69.
Mrs. Waters was born Nov. 17, 1930, in Madison, Ohio. She married John R. Waters on Aug. 27, 1949, in Madison and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 1999.
Mrs. Waters sold rural real estate and did secretarial work for Brookhaven National Atomic Laboratory on Long Island, N.Y.; for the city manager of Minot, N.D.; and for a marine biologist at the University of Rhode Island.
Clubs that Mrs. Waters were involved with include: San Juan Basin Archeology Chapter, San Juan Audubon Chapter, National Audubon Club, Durango Bird Club, National Ski Patrol at Purgatory Resort, Ladies Barbershop Quartet, Knitting Guild and the Durango Discussion Group.
She is survived by her husband, John Waters of Durango, a daughter, Laurel Waters of Durango; a son, Lon Waters of San Diego, Calif.; and her mother, Katherine Frink of Madison, Ohio.

Vergene Zella MacGregor
Vergene Zella MacGregor died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 88.
Mrs. MacGregor was born on Jan. 23, 1912, in Villa Grove, Ill. She graduated from Central High School in South Bend, Ind., in 1926. She was active in local theater and volunteer groups. She married Ronald E. MacGregor in 1936 in South Bend. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1958, and was active there in church and volunteer work. She and her husband retired to Tucson in 1965. Her husband died in 1989 and she moved to Colorado.
She is survived by a son, Ronald J. MacGregor of Bayfield; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Edward Joe Candelaria
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Edward Joe Candelaria, a life-long resident of the area, who died Saturday, March 18, 2000. He was 86.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Rev. John Bowe will officiate at services. A rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Hood Mortuary Chapel.
Mr. Candelaria’s family homesteaded and ranched much of the Piedra River Valley. As a young man he raised livestock, beginning as a sheepman. He later raised cattle and was a hay farmer. Mr. Candelaria purchased additional land for the family to ranch while his brothers were serving in WWII.
He married Priscilla Belarde on Feb. 4, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs. Mr. Candelaria enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Candelaria of Ignacio.
Miguel Felipe Quintana
A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Rosa-St. Peter Catholic Church in Arboles for Miguel Felipe Quintana, of Aztec, who died of natural causes Tuesday, March 14, 2000. He was 85.
The Rev. John Bowe will officiate. Burial will be at the Rosa Community Cemetery. A Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at the church.
Mr. Quintana was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Rosa, N.M. He started life as a rural farmer in Rosa and then became a store owner in Rosa until it was destroyed by fire. It was the last remaining business in Rosa.
Mr. Quintana went to work in the road maintenance department for the U.S. Department of the Interior in Dulce, N.M., as a heavy-duty mechanic. At the time of his retirement, he was the supervisor in that department.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Quintana of Aztec; two sons, Miguel V. "Billy" Quintana and Pablo "Paul" Quintana, both of Bloomfield; three daughters, Martha Quintana of Arboles, Rosa Quintana McGuire of Farmington, and Vicki Quintana of Bloomfield; three step-children, Debra Stucklen of Loveland, Joel Swadesh of Albuquerque, and Daisy Swadesh of Farmington; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Carl Baker
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Indian Mission for Carl Baker, who died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. He was 77.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. A wake will be held at the Baker residence, 588 County Road 322, Friday evening.
Mr. Baker was born April 9, 1922, in Ignacio. He was a lifetime resident of the Ignacio area.
Mr. Baker served in the Army during World War II and took part in the Normandy landing. He was in many battles throughout the European Campaign, including Northern France, Rhineland Ardennes and Central Europe. He served in the XX Corps, also known as the "Ghost Corps" because of its elusiveness, under Gen. George S. Patton’s command.
Mr. Baker was a rancher most of his life and a bookkeeper for the Southern Ute Tribe. He was a member of the Southern Ute Housing Board and founder of the Southern Ute Sheep Foundation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Selma J. Baker-Winder.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, of Ignacio; one son, Randy J. Baker Sr,. of Ignacio; four grandchildren, Nathan Strong Elk, Sam Winder, Madilenia Baker and Rana Jean Baker; and six great-grandchildren.
John Lemuel ‘Lem’ Duncan
John Lemuel "Lem" Duncan died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at the Four Corners Health Care Center. He was 92.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Duncan was born Dec. 30, 1907, in Cortez. He graduated from Cortez High School and married Harriet Kirk in 1926.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Harold, and infant son, Charles.
Survivors include two daughters, Connie Christenson of Aurora, Colo., and Jody Armstrong of Colorado Springs; a sister, Thelma of Lakeside, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has been arranged. Private services will be at a later date.

Goldie L. Williams
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary for Goldie L. Williams, who died of natural causes Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 89.
Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mrs. Williams was born Oct. 12, 1910, in Crawford, Colo. She lived in the Durango area since 1928.
Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and worked as a clerk at Graden’s, Woolworth’s and Levine’s. She lived at Tamarin Square for the last several years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Williams, and two sons, Eldon and Edward Williams.
Survivors include one son, Neil Williams, of El Cajon, Calif.; one daughter, Ruth Wielang of Aurora, Colo.; one sister, Bertha Turner of Hotchkiss, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
