William Donald
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for William Donald, who died after a lengthy illness Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at his home in Durango. He was 85.
The Rev. Bill Postler will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mr. Donald was born June 15, 1914, in Saltcoats, Scotland. He married Grace Dunlop on June 1, 1940.
Mr. Donald was Master Mason of the Mason Lodge Mother Kilwinning No. 0 beginning in 1943. He worked with the Alfred Noble ICI Explosives Project. He fought in World War II in the Royal Navy on the H.M.S. Sheffield.
Mr. Donald immigrated to the United States in 1950. He worked as a boatwright, building mine sweepers for the Korean War. In peacetime, he built racing yachts for the America’s Cup. He was the first to use aluminum for racing masts. He was a master carpenter.
Mr. Donald retired in 1980 and moved to Durango with his family. He served as treasurer of the Durango Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Donald, of Durango; his daughter, Anna M. Price, of Durango; his step-daughter, Nicole Johnson, of New Hope, Pa.; his step-granddaughter, Martine Smith, of Norman, Okla.; three step-great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in the United States, Scotland, England and Canada.
Carmilla "Maxine" Kelly
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Carmilla "Maxine" Kelly, a 30-year Durango resident, who died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at home in Durango. She was 84.
The Rev. Denny Johnson and Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mrs. Kelly was born April 6, 1915, in Anderson, Mo. She married Lester A. Kelly on June 23, 1938, in Southwest City, Mo. They lived in Denver for a number of years before moving to Durango in 1970.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Dina Taulli.
Mrs. Kelly is survived by her husband; two daughters, Kay Kelly of Denver, and Vicki Taulli-Kelly, of Durango; a brother, Ray Johnson; a sister, Arlene Snyder; five grandchildren, Kelly Hayman, Joe, Lisa and Kristen Taulli, and Gina Gomez, all from the Durango area; and seven great-grandchildren.

Wilho Matis
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for Wilho Matis, who died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, in Durango after a long illness. He was 92.
The Rev. Andrew Cooley will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery, and a reception will follow at St. Mark’s Parish Hall.
Mr. Matis was born July 21, 1907, in Telluride, Colo. During high school, he played basketball and baseball and was a drummer in the high school band. After high school, he moved to Durango and worked for Earl Barker Sr., who owned the local Conoco dealership. Eventually, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
Mr. Matis married Emma Lewis on Oct. 9, 1939, in Palisade, Colo. In November 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. During his Army duty, he was stationed to the U.S. Army Post Office in New York City.
At the end of World War II and with his discharge, the family returned to Durango, and Mr. Matis returned to the post office.
Mr. Matis was an original member of the American Legion Goldennaires Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also a member of the local Masonic Lodge and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. He was instrumental in helping build the first rope tow at Chapman Hill Ski Area.
When Mr. Matis retired from the post office, he was assistant postmaster and had 35 years’ experience.
During his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, skiing, swimming and tennis.
Survivors include his wife, Emma, of Durango; two sons, Melvyn, of Durango, and Lewis, of Mancos; his twin brother, Arvo, of Durango and several nieces and nephews.

Jane-Claire Heitland Vigil
A memorial service was held March 18 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Mo., for Jane-Claire Heitland Vigil, a former Durango resident, who died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the John Knox Retirement Village Care Center in Lee’s Summit, Mo. She was 81.
The Rev. Michael Tooley officiated at services.
Mrs. Vigil was born Feb. 2, 1919, in St. Louis. She lived in Durango from 1985 to 1994. She married John Vigil, a native of Durango.
Mrs. Vigil attended public schools in St. Louis and was a graduate of Harris Teachers College. She taught elementary school in the St. Louis school system for several years, retiring in 1983.
While living in Durango, Mr. and Mrs. Vigil were involved with the Durango-La Plata Senior Center.
They were long-time volunteers at the Durango Public Library. They moved to the retirement community in Lee’s Summit in May 1994.
Mr. Vigil died in December 1994, just a few months prior to their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mark Andrew (Andy) Pauly
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the World Harvest Center, 800 North Buena Vista, in Farmington, for Mark Andrew (Andy) Pauly, who died Sunday, March 26, 2000, from a skiing accident at Purgatory Resort. He was 40.
He is survived by his fiancee, Jill McFarland; mothers and fathers, Ken and Marge Tolbert, and Don and Rosalee Pauly; a grandmother, Winifred Basham; three brothers, Steve Pauly, Scott Pauly and Troy Tolbert; two sisters, Kathy Abbey and Christine; and five nieces and nephews.

Mary Emma Pruner
Mary Emma Pruner, a former Durango resident, died Wednesday, March 22, 2000, in Sun City, Ariz. She was 91.
Private services were held in Glendale, Ariz.
Mrs. Pruner was born June 5, 1908, in Durango. She worked as a bookkeeper with Burnett Construction until she retired in 1970, when she moved to Sun City. There, she worked in the accounting department at Western Savings Bank until 1982.
She is survived by a sister, Lena Thompson, of Sun City; and a brother, Adolph Valentine, of Farmington.
Stella M. Gallegos
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles for Stella M. Gallegos, who died Tuesday, March 21, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. She was 82.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Allison-Tiffany Cemetery
in Allison. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.
Mrs. Gallegos was born April 30, 1917, in Francis, Colo. She married Jose Benito Gallegos Sept. 21, 1939.
Mrs. Gallegos lived in the area for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker, and she enjoyed canning, sewing and gardening. She was a member of the Allison Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Benito Gallegos, on Sept. 17, 1997.
Survivors include six children, Frances Lucero and Tony Gallegos, both of Allison; Lola Chappel of Denver; Gilbert Gallegos of Grand Junction; Elaine Fross and Eliza Chavez, both of Durango; two sisters, Lillie Labato, of Pagosa Springs, and Ida Enriquez, of Durango; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Prince Henry Schroeder
A memorial service will be Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Brownwood, Texas, for Prince Henry Schroeder, who died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Brownwood, Texas, after a brief illness. He was 93.
Mr. Schroeder was born Oct. 10, 1906, in Dayton, Texas. Before moving to Brownwood, Texas, in 1998, he was a longtime resident of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lake Vallecito.
Mr. Schroeder was a retired baker by profession and was a Mason, a Shriner and past director of R.O.J. Court 24 in Albuquerque.
He is survived by his wife, Joye, of Brownwood, Texas.
Danielle Howe
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Danielle Howe, who died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at her home in Ignacio. She was 53.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio.
Mrs. Howe was born Feb. 14, 1947, in Ignacio. She lived in the Ignacio area for most of her life. She married Gerald Dwight Howe on Aug. 27, 1972, in Cortez.
Mrs. Howe was a member of Four Corners Gourd Dance Society and the Native American Church, and she was the Head Woman Sundance Leader in Ft. Hall, Idaho. She worked at the Extension Office of the Southern Ute Tribe, and she managed the Pino Nuche Motel. Mrs. Howe was a dental assistant for two years and a reserve officer for the Southern Ute Tribal Police. Most of all, she enjoyed working at the Southern Ute Museum and Cultural Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald D. Howe, on July 13, 1999.
Survivors include her mother, Naomi Red of Ignacio; a son, Robert Howe of Pueblo, Colo.; two daughters, Monique Medina of Sacramento, Calif., and Erica Howe of Ignacio; five sisters, Donna Rock, Vera Red, Leona Pinnecoose, Etta Red and Ula Gregory, all of Ignacio; a brother, Bryce Red of Ignacio; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
