Laurie J. ‘Ladyhawk’ Burke Wharton
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Vallecito Baptist Church for Laurie J. "Ladyhawk" Burke Wharton, who died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her home in Bayfield. She was 48.
The cause of death was brain cancer.
The Rev. Dick Smith will officiate. Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery
in Bayfield. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.
Mrs. Wharton was born March 31, 1951, in Providence, R.I. She married James F. Wharton Oct. 21, 1995, at Vallecito Baptist Church. She lived in various places in the nation, including Taos, N.M., Sausalito and San Francisco, Calif., and Central City, Colo. Mrs. Wharton lived in Bayfield for eight years.
Mrs. Wharton owned businesses that sold Southwestern art. She owned Taos Traders for 30 years. She was a member of the Vallecito Baptist Church and was an accomplished weaver.
Survivors include her husband, James "Shamus" Wharton, of Bayfield; her son, Jeremy Jennings, of New York, N.Y.; her daughter, Jessica Jennings, of Durango; her sister, Chris Rovinski Burke, of North Scituate, R.I.; and two brothers, Steven Burke, of North Scituate, R.I., and Douglas Burke, of Atlanta, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Jeremy Jennings to The Leukemia Society of America, 475 Park Avenue South, 21st Floor, New York, NY 10016. Jeremy Jennings is running in a 27-mile marathon in Alaska and hopes to raise at least $10,000 in his mother’s name for cancer research.
John Thomas Morrissey
A memorial Mass will be held in Omaha, Neb., for John Thomas Morrissey, a 27-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, who died Feb. 2, 2000, in Durango. He was 78.
A Durango celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
Mr. Morrissey was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Omaha, Neb. He married Rosemary Wetmore in San Francisco on May 1, 1945. She preceded him in death. In 1968, he moved to Durango, and in 1983, he married Allien Malarsie.
Mr. Morrissey enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 8, 1941, following Pearl Harbor. He retired from the Navy in 1968. In Durango, Mr. Morrissey served as the personnel director for Mercy Medical Center until he retired in 1978. He served for many years with Project Merry Christmas and Meals on Wheels and worked with VITA until his health prevented it. Mr. Morrissey was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Allien, of Durango; four step-children John and George Malarsie of Durango, Jim Malarsie of Bosque Farms, N.M., and Kally Casebier of Montrose; sisters Alice Neumann, Sally Edwards and Lois Morrissey of Omaha, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Calvin N. ‘Bud’ Caldwell
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Calvin N. "Bud" Caldwell, a former Durango teacher who died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz., after a lengthy illness. He was 75.
Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today and will continue until 5 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.
Mr. Caldwell was born July 24, 1924, in Pueblo. He began teaching in Durango schools in 1956, and retired in 1986.
After retirement, he and his wife, Mary, divided their time between Mesa, Ariz., and Durango.
Mr. Caldwell was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion and B.P.O.E. No. 507.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Stephen Caldwell and Christopher Caldwell; two grandsons, Wesley Caldwell and John Caldwell; and two sisters, Clara Kvaran and Anne Venditti.
Jo Ellen McAllister Brady
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Jo Ellen McAllister Brady, who died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center of congestive heart failure. She was 91.
The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. A Rosary will be said at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary. Inurnment will be this summer at St. James Catholic Church in Underwood, Minn.
Mrs. Brady was born June 7, 1908, on a farm near Vermillion in Union County, S.D. She moved with the family to her father Paul’s favorite fishing and hunting spot in Ottertail County, Minn., in 1918. Two years later, her father died in a train accident and she went to high school in Fergus Falls. After graduation, the family moved to Fargo, N.D., where she attended Interstate Business College and got her first job as secretary with the telephone company.
In 1932, she married William Brian Brady in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mrs. Brady worked as a secretary for the federal government for most of her life. Her Depression-era jobs included positions with the Secretary of the Interior Department in Washington, D.C., the Bureau of Prohibition and the newly formed Social Security Administration back in Rapid City, S.D.
In the late 1940s, Mr. and Mrs. Brady moved to Santa Monica, Calif., where Mrs. Brady worked for the Veteran’s Administration. She was widowed in 1964 and retired in 1973.
In 1991, Mrs. Brady followed her children to Durango.
Mrs. Brady is survived by three children, William Brady and Michaela Dasteel, both of Durango, and Mariana Klossner of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; her sister, Camilla Schultz and her brother, Al McAllister, both of Ottertail County, Minn.; six grandchildren, Mark Olson of Joshua Tree, Calif., Anne Eidson of Edina, Minn., Amy Sondrup of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Johanna, Joseph and Johnny Dasteel, all of Durango; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions for Catholic spiritual formation work can be made to the Dasteel Foundation at 414 East Third Ave., Durango, CO 81301.
Alice Marie Karr
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Alice Marie Karr, who died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, in Albuquerque. She was 61.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Cremation will follow the services.
Mrs. Karr was born July 10, 1938, in Oil City, Pa. She moved to Arizona in 1952.
Mrs. Karr moved to Ignacio three years ago to be close to her family. She worked for the last 10 years as a caregiver and volunteer for the thrift store in Bayfield.
Survivors include her son, Roy A. Smith of Ignacio; three daughters, Penny Ellgas of Tucson, Ariz., Betty Scott of Superior, Mont., and Sky Branson of Ridgway, Colo.; five sisters, Mildred Crawford of Tucson, Ariz., and Elva Orsino, Janet Karns, Betty Patterson and Erla MacCleery, all of Franklin, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Nona E. Salfisberg
Nona E. Salfisberg died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Durango. She was 90.
The cause of death was not available.
Mrs. Salfisberg was born Feb. 6, 1909, in Delta, Colo. She was a lifelong resident of Southwest Colorado.
In 1933, Mrs. Salfisberg moved to Silverton, where she owned and operated a variety of businesses. She moved to Durango in 1971.
She was preceded in death by her son, Billie Barlow, in 1977.
Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn Vota of Durango; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Per Mrs. Salfisberg’s request, no services are planned.

Rose Irene Gilstrap MacDonald
Rose Irene Gilstrap MacDonald died of natural causes Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in a Roosevelt, Utah, care center. She was 93.
Mrs. MacDonald was born April 15, 1906, in Lewiston, Wash. She married Kinnon MacDonald.
Mr. and Mrs. MacDonald operated a ranch in the Bayfield/Pagosa Springs area. Mrs. MacDonald enjoyed handicrafts.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include two nieces, Wilma Boyd of Craig, Colo., and Janet Hankerson of Midvale, Utah.
Inurnment will be at Greenmount Cemetery
in Durango.
Harold Bischoff
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup, N.M., for Harold Bischoff, who died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in Wickenburg, Ariz. He was 79.
The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Bischoff was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Indianapolis. He was a bakery owner, retiring in 1980.
Mr. and Mrs. Bischoff spent summers in Durango.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Garcia Bischoff; five daughters, Anita Dossey of Houston, Texas, Theresa Murry and Lorretta Bischoff, both of Scottsdale, Ariz., Georgiana Thomas of Los Angeles, and Henrietta Gilmore of Cincinnati; five sons, Anselm Bischoff of Scottsdale, Gerald Bischoff of Albuquerque, N.M., and Edward Bischoff, Thomas Bischoff and David Bischoff, all of Gallup; 30 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Derril L. Pilkenton
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the All Faith United Methodist Church in Eagle Rock, Mo., for Derril L. Pilkenton, who died of cancer Thursday, March 30, 2000, at his home on Table Rock Lake in southern Missouri. He was 80.
Mr. Pilkenton, a World War II veteran, was a staff sergeant in the 8th Armored Division who participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Europe.
Mr. Pilkenton was a former news photographer, photoengraver and printer. He lived for many years in Joplin, Mo., before retiring to Table Rock Lake in 1982. He was a former resident of Durango.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Kathryn; three daughters, Kathy Pilkenton of Tallahassee, Fla., Pam Haywood of Benton, La., and Patrice Heller of Durango; one son, Ron Pilkenton of Aurora, Mo., and eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a local Hospice organization.
