Connie Jean Englehart

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church for Connie Jean Englehart, who died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Durango. She was 44.

A celebration of her life will be 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at her home, 305 E. 36th St. Visitation will be Thursday at Hood Mortuary.

Ms. Englehart was born July 15, 1955. She was born with Down syndrome. She was raised by her grandmother in Cortez.

Ms. Englehart later moved to the Regional Center for People with Disabilities in Grand Junction, Colo. She moved to Durango in 1987.

Ms. Englehart was engaged to marry Eddie Welch.

She was active in the Durango community, especially participating in art and dance activities. She also volunteered for Civitan for many years.

Ms. Englehart was a member of Cornerstone Church. She was close to her family from Cortez, especially her brother Ron and his wife Cheryl, and her uncle George, or as she called him "Pal."

Richard R. Lopilato

A memorial mass will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Richard R. Lopilato, a Durango resident since 1978, who died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999. He was 64.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Lopilato was born July 11, 1935, in Mespeth, N.Y. He married Gina Perri in 1958. Mr. Lopilato was a member of Hillcrest Golf Course and St. Columba Catholic Church. He and his wife had owned and operated Shampoo hair salon since 1978.

Mr. Lopilato is survived by his wife, Gina Lopilato of Durango; two daughters, Rosaria Glasco of Phoenix, and Camille Giersch of Russell, Kan.; a son, Chris Lopilato of Durango; and five grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made in Richard R. Lopilato’s name to Hillcrest Golf Course.

George Montoya

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for George Montoya, a lifelong Durango resident, who died Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999, at his home in Durango. He was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

A visitation will be Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary Chapel. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church.

Mr. Montoya was a retired warehouse manager for A & L Coors of Durango. He was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Montoya was born May 6, 1933, in Durango. He is survived by his wife, Jean; six daughters, Marlene Anderson of Aztec, N.M., Roberta Atencio of Durango, Georgianne Mendez of Corrales, N.M., Karen Gomez of Durango, and Sherri Lynn Gurule of Aztec; a son, Garry Montoya of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two brothers, Lee Montoya of Clifton and Dave Montoya of Denver, and two sisters, Esther Paul of Grand Junction and Ruth Martinez of Durango.

Mr. Montoya was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Montoya; his mother, Pauline Duran; brother Richard Montoya; sister Sophie Carrillo and granddaughter Raquel Gomez.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Mercy Home Health Care or San Juan Basin Home Health.

Frances Edna Crook

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield for Frances Edna Crook, a former telephone supervisor, who died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, in Durango of natural causes. She was 82.

The Rev. John Knutson will officiate at services.

Mrs. Crook was born March 5, 1917, in Los Angeles. She married James F. Crook in Los Angeles on Aug. 2, 1936.

Mrs. Crook was a retired Pacific Telephone supervisor. She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Durango and the Aspen Club in Bayfield. She was an avid crocheter and loved to travel. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include two sons, Gail W. Crook of Durango and James F. Crook of Eureka, Calif., five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Alta Faye Walling

A memorial gathering will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Giambattista home for Alta Faye Walling, a former bookkeeper, who died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, in Durango. She was 76.

The Rev. Curt Alderton will officiate at the gathering.

Mrs. Walling married Charles Albert Walling on April 30, 1943, in Las Vegas, Nev. They moved to Durango in 1951. Mrs. Walling worked as a bookkeeper for Hocker Chevrolet, Midwest Automotive and Chuck’s Diesel Repair. She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 7, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Charles Kenneth Walling of Durango; a daughter, Paulette Giambattista, of Durango; a brother, Melvin Witham, of Port Angeles, Wash.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Activities Program at Four Corners Health Care Center, 2911 Junction St., Durango, CO 81301.

Gladys W. Foukas

Gladys W. Foukas, a former public employee of South Dakota, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, in Durango of a heart attack. She was 85.

She was cremated, and no services are planned.

Mrs. Foukas was born Dec. 22, 1913, in Broadland, S.D. She moved to Durango in 1987 to be near her daughter and son.

Mrs. Foukas graduated from Broadland High School in 1931. She married William Foukas on Oct. 8, 1933.

Mrs. Foukas worked for the state of South Dakota in the public safety office in the Capitol Building in Pierre for 32 years. She retired in 1975.

Mrs. Foukas was a 50-year member of the Pierre Sarah-Rebekah Lodge No. 24. She was a member of the Pierre Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1943.

Mrs. Foukas is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Zellitti of Durango; two sons, Bill Foukas of Durango and Larry Foukas of Mankato, Minn.; two sisters, Evelyn Stowell of Le Seuer, Minn., and Laura Prosser of Granton, Wis.; a brother, Earl Mediger of Le Seuer; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Phillip Gordon Box

A funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Phillip Gordon Box, who died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1999, in Stockton, Calif., from natural causes. He was 62.

Pastor Kelly Winlock will officiate, with burial to follow at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mr. Box was born Sept. 4, 1937, in Ft. Duchesne, Utah. During the Korean War he was a mechanic for the U.S. Air Force while stationed in Germany. He was a longtime resident of Stockton, Calif., and was a very simple man who wanted to live life as simply as possible.

Mr. Box is survived by his mother, Mary B. Chavez of Bayfield; three sisters, Phyllis M. Escalanti and Margie Borst of Bayfield, and Elsie Calabaza of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 nieces and nephews; and, two uncles.

Arline M. Beaver

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Durango Christian Church for Arline M. Beaver, a longtime resident of Bayfield who died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, in Bayfield. She was 80.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Pastors Steve Andrew and Michael Gray will officiate at services. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Beaver was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Marshall County, Kan. She moved to Bayfield in 1933. She attended nursing school in Denver and worked at Mercy Hospital for many years.

She married Floyd Madison Beaver on Oct. 28, 1942, in Bayfield. She and her husband owned and operated the Valley View Home for 30 years. She was a member of the Bayfield Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 6, 1997.

She is survived by two sons, Eugene F. Beaver of Durango, and Leroy J. Beaver of Bayfield; two daughters, Beverly E. Ladman of Bayfield, and Marjorie Diane Benton of Pahrump, Nev.; a sister, M. Elaine Swilling; seven grandchildren; and, three great-grandchildren.

Edward J. ‘Jay’ Engel

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Edward J. "Jay" Engel, a Bayfield resident who died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 71.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Father Mike McCleary will officiate at services.

Mr. Engel was born Aug. 6, 1928, in Chicago, Ill. He moved to Southern California as a child and graduated from UCLA. He sold specialty steel products during his career.

He married Virginia "Ginny" Harris in 1949, and they had two daughters: Nancy Louise "Nan" Engel Carroll and Ellen Jayne Engel Brandt. After his first wife’s death from breast cancer in 1972, he married Barbara Techmann, who had two daughters: Sandra and Cheryl, by a former marriage.

In the early 1990s, Mr. Engel and Techmann retired to Ignacio, where they became involved in fly-fishing and horses. Mr. Engel was an active member of Trout Unlimited up to his final illness.

He had a lifelong passion for jazz and tennis, rooted for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and grew fond of computers in his later years.

He is survived by his second wife, Barbara, and her two daughters; two daughters by his first wife, Nan and Ellen; a brother, Gerald "Jerry" Engel; two cousins; an aunt; two nieces; a nephew; and, two grandchildren.
