Joe R. Perez
Memorial services were held Tuesday at Rice Mortuary in Brighton for Joe R. Perez, who died Friday, June 18, 1999, at Platte Valley Medical Center in Brighton from a heart attack. He was 87.
Mr. Perez was born Feb. 24, 1912, in Blanco, N.M., and later moved to Durango. He married Tomasita Martinez in 1930 in Durango.
Mr. Perez moved to Craig and worked as a cattle rancher for 50 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Craig.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Tomasita, and son, David, in 1988.
He is survived by a daughter, Aurelia "Penny" Beyers of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; a son, Ranaldo Perez of Craig; a brother, Henry Perez of Montrose; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and, three great-great-grandchildren.
Alice Anna Byars
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home in Pekin, Ill., for Alice Anna Byars, who died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. She was 75. The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Duane D. Moraine will officiate at services. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, Ill.
Mrs. Byars was born Alice Anna Busch on June 30, 1923, in Hampshire, Ill., before moving to Durango in 1954. She married Riley Edward Byars on Oct. 24, 1941 in Sycamore, Ill.
Mrs. Byars lived in Durango from 1954 to 1965. She retired from working as a cashier and retail clerk for Libson’s and Brown’s Sporting Goods, both in the Pekin Mall in 1989. She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin, Ill., attended First Assembly of God in Pekin and was a member of Parkside Athletics in Pekin.
She is survived by her husband, Riley, of Pekin; a daughter, Donna Jean Bacus of Durango; two sons, Richard E. Byars and Steven E. Byars of Pekin; six grandchildren, including Rena Bacus and Ronda Shockley, of Durango; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Magdelena Fillweber of Springfield, Ill., and Christine Schiele of Torrance, Calif.

Louis I. Loeser
Funeral services will be Sunday in a family member’s home in Houston for Louis I. Loeser, a former major for the U.S. Army, who died Saturday, June 19, 1999, in Albuquerque, N.M., from a long illness. He was 66.
Mr. Loeser was born Nov. 10, 1932, in Shreveport, La., and lived most of his life in Houston. He moved to Durango after retiring in 1992. He married Mary Davison Loeser on June 27, 1958 in Houston.
Mr. Loeser was a graduate of Rice University and earned his M.D. at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He was an orthopedic surgeon in private practice in southwest Houston..
He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Durango; three sons, David Loeser of Houston, Bart Loeser of Austin, Texas; and Bob of Albuquerque; and five grandchildren. Contributions may be made as donations to the charity of one’s choice.
Ruby Wilma 'Billy' Hall
Funeral services will be held at a later date at Greenmount Cemetery
for Ruby Wilma "Billy" Hall, who died Saturday, June 19, 1999, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 85.
The cause of death was unavailable.
Private graveside services will follow cremation.
Ms. Hall was born May 11, 1914, in Arriola. She was nick-named "Billy" at birth and was known by that name her whole life. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Durango and past member of several service organizations.
Ms. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Everett C. Hall, in 1969. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Cummins of Hernando, Fla., and Kaye Pouliat of Durango.; three sisters, Minnie Ashby of Albuquerque, Neta Wilson of Aurora, Colo., and Barbara Evans of Durango; one brother, Willard Bishop of Cortez; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Marcial Jose Mestas
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Marcial Jose Mestas, who died Friday, June 18, 1999, at his home in the La Posta area of Durango. He was 63.
The cause of death was unavailable.
Father Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate at services. Recitation of the rosary will be 6 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be at La Posta Cemetery.
Mr. Mestas was born March 30, 1936, in Gallina, N.M., and grew up in the La Posta area. He was a longtime resident of Durango, except for several years he spent in Utah. Mr. Mestas was an auto mechanic and he enjoyed working on cars for friends.
He is survived by a son, Joe Mestas of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Jenifer Heskett of Sandy, Utah and Susie Mestas of Salt Lake City; a brother, Ernest Mestas of Aztec, N.M.; five sisters, Sarah Vasquez of Ignacio, Antonia Valdez of Salt Lake City, Adelia Mestas of Durango, Virginia Paez of Salt Lake City and Neomie Albo of Durango; three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Stella Mae Queen
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Stella Mae Queen, who died June 17, 1999, in Fort Collins. She was 83.
The cause of death was unavailable.
The Rev. Timothy Evers will officiate at services. Visitation will be today at Hood Mortuary from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., with burial to follow in Greenmount Cemetery.
Ms. Queen was born on June 9, 1916, in Vona, Colo. She was raised on a cattle ranch in Washington County and then attended high school in Cope, Colo.
She married John E. Queen on March 16, 1935, in Pueblo.
Ms. Queen worked as a dental assistant and office manager for Dr. C.L. Johnson for 24 years in the Durango area. After Dr. Johnson retired, she worked as a retail clerk for Plaza Pharmacy for 24 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1979.
She is survived by a daughter, Fern Louise Queen of Fort Collins; two sisters, Fern Louise Ross of Fort Morgan and Ann Heinrichs of Coarsegold, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Eugene Spencer Baker
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Eugene Spencer Baker, who died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at his home in Ignacio. He was 76.
The Rev. William J. Farrel will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.
The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Baker was born July 17, 1922, in Ignacio, wherehe was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Baker attended school at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which later became the Ute Vocational School in Ignacio. He did not graduate from high school.
His mother, Lucille Watts, died in January 1934 when he was 12 years old. He then farmed with his father, who preceded him in death in September 1961.
Mr. Baker was inducted into the U.S. Army through Local Board No. 31 of La Plata County. He entered active service Sept. 30, 1942, in Pueblo, and was part of the 631st Military Police Escort Guard Company. He was stationed in Hawaii and served in the Pacific Theater from Sept. 16, 1944, until Jan. 21, 1946. He received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was separated Jan. 26, 1946, at Fort Logan.
Mr. Baker received a certificate of recognition for service in the U.S. Armed Forces of World War II signed by Leonard C. Burch, chairman of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.
Survivors include his brother, Clifford Baker of Ignacio; his sister, Vida B. Peabody of Ignacio; seven nephews, Ronnie C. Baker, Iden C. Baker, Fredric C. Peabody, Melvin Baker, Robbin Santistevan, Dale Santistevan and Dana Santistevan; and six nieces, Ann Blackbird, Connie Baker, Ramona Silva, Helene Peabody, Marlene Peabody and Dawn Santistevan.
Ronald Elvan ‘Ronnie’ Chadwick
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez for Ronald Elvan "Ronnie" Chadwick, who died Tuesday, June 15, 1999, at University Hospital in Denver after a battle with cancer. He was 65.
Mr. Chadwick was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Cortez. He was a resident of Dolores.
Mr. Chadwick had been a lifetime member of the Telluride Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, LaDean of Dolores; a daughter, Rhonda Zellitti of Durango; a son, Kyle Chadwick of Dolores; five grandchildren, Chad, Kristi and Tracy Zellitti and Heather and Kole Chadwick; three sisters, Twylla Mahoney of Telluride, Connie Anderson of Leadville and Carole Mortenson of Pima, Ariz.; a brother, Al Thye of Durango; his father, Lawson Chadwick of Grand Junction and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary E. Woods
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary for Mary E. Woods, an 18-year resident of Durango who died Friday, June 11, 1999, after an extended illness. She was 90.
Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at the service.
Ms. Woods was born June 2, 1909, in Craig, Colo. She moved to Durango from Denver 18 years ago and was a resident of Tammaron Square.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn.
She is survived by a son, Dan Woods of Southfork, Colo.; two nieces, Barbara Pugh of Durango and Mary Lou Marshall of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a nephew, James O’Brien of Aptos, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Lillian May Liese
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Allison Tiffany Community Church in Allison, Colo., for Lillian May Liese, a Durango native who died Friday, June 11, 1999, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center. She was 76.
Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate at the services, with burial following at the Allison Tiffany Cemetery.
Ms. Liese was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Durango and was preceded in death by her husband, William. She was living in Ignacio at the time of her death.
She is survived by four sons, George Liese of Durango, Bill Liese of Farmington, Charlie Liese of Ignacio, and Bob Liese of Bloomfield, N.M.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Miller, Eric Liese and Mandee Liese; and three great-granddaughters.
