Vivian M. Candelaria

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter St. Rosa Catholic Church in Arboles for Vivian M. Candelaria, who died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango after a longterm illness. She was 82.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Rosa Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and Wednesday, and a Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel.

Mrs. Candelaria was born Aug. 19, 1916, in Pagosa Springs. She lived in the Four Corners area all of her life and was a resident of Ignacio.

Mrs. Candelaria was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Carmelitas.

Mrs. Candelaria married her first husband, Jake Candelaria in December 1932. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jake Candelaria and Julian Garcia; daughters, Viola Alires and Catherine Candelaria and sons, David Candelaria, Wilford Candelaria and James Candelaria.

Survivors include two sons, Jake J. Candelaria Jr. and Robert E. Candelaria, both of Ignacio; two daughters, Dorothy Peterson of Denver and Virginia Candelaria of Aspen; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 931, Durango CO 81301 or Ignacio Volunteer Emergency Squad (IVES), P.O. Box 800, Ignacio, CO 81137.

Erwin R. De Luche

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Erwin R. De Luche, who died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, in Albuquerque. He was 83. The cause of death was not available.

Mr. De Luche was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Durango. He married Ruby Kuykendall Jan. 26, 1938, in Durango.

Mr. De Luche served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He then spent at least 25 years in law enforcement. First, he served as an investigator for five counties in Southwest Colorado and was chief of police in Cortez during his last six years of employment. Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. De Luche moved to Roswell, N.M., where they resided at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Roswell, Scottish Rite in Grand Junction, where he attained the rank of 32nd degree, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cortez, charter member of the Elks Lodge in Cortez and a master Mason in the Masonic Lodge of Durango,

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Donna Cooksey of Santa Maria, Calif.; a son, Denis De Luche of Moriarty, N.M.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Matie Thomass of Montrose.

Dan Drake Newton

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Nuuiciu Bible Baptist Church for Dan Drake Newton, a lifelong Four Corners resident, who died Thursday, April 29, 1999, in Durango from heart problems. He was 54.

The Rev. Bob Griggs will officiate at services. A wake will be held at the Nuuiciu church at 7:30 p.m. today. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio following Monday’s services.

Mr. Newton was born Dec. 14, 1944, in Ignacio, Colo. He was a laborer, a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and a graduate of Ignacio High School.

He was preceded in death by both parents, Tom Newton and Jane Drake Newton.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Price, of Ignacio; two brothers, Darrell Newton and Jimmy Newton, both of Ignacio, and Roger Newton of Orem, Utah; two sisters, Louisa King and Mary Ann Weaver, both of Ignacio; and many nieces, nephews and stepchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Ignacio Volunteer Emergency Services, P.O. Box 800, Ignacio, CO 81137.

Marc Lee Beck

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at American Lutheran Church in Grand Junction for Marc Lee Beck, a Grand Junction High School student, who died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Children’s Hospital in Denver from complications during heart surgery. He was 17.

Pastor Joy Eisenhauer will officiate at services. Burial will be at Orchard Mesa Cemetery.

Mr. Beck was born Nov. 14, 1981, in Delta. He was adopted in January, 1989, by Cory and Cherry Beck of Grand Junction.

Mr. Beck was a soccer and tennis player and enjoyed cars, music, drawing, sculpture and nature. He was an active participant in the congregation of American Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his parents, Cory and Cherry Beck; a sister, Shawnda Fletcher of Delta; grandparents Robert and Mary Jean Beck of Durango; and a grandmother, Lou Ellen Johnson of Hayti, S.D.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Colorado Botanical Society care of Callahan Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Rd., Grand Junction, CO 81505.

Cecil W. Sower

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield for Cecil W. Sower, who died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at his home in Bayfield. He was 86.

The cause of death was not available.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate. Burial will be at Bayfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Sower was born Sept. 18, 1912, in Deerfield, Kan. His family moved to Bayfield in 1926. He graduated from Bayfield High School, where he was active in football, basketball, baseball and band. He attended Hays State College in Hays, Kan., for a short time.

During the war years of the early 1940s, Mr. Sower worked for Remmington Arms in Denver and Mare Island Ship Yard in Vallejo, Calif. He became an accomplished welder.

Mr. Sower was on the first Consolidated School Board for Bayfield and served 12 years as secretary. He also served as Bayfield town clerk. He was a director and officer of La Plata Electric Association Inc. from Feb. 11, 1953, to Oct. 24, 1981. He was an incorporator and organizing director of Pine River Valley Bank and served on the board of directors for 19 years.

He was a charter member of the Bayfield Lions Club, member of the Durango Elks Lodge and member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Sower ran an automobile repair shop in Bayfield before starting Sower Brothers Lumber Co. with his brother in 1947. He later was an owner and president of Lewis Mercantile Hardware and Lumber Co. He also developed two subdivisions and a camper park in Bayfield.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Sower married Gertrude L. Parmley June 17, 1936, in Russell, Kan. She died Jan. 1, 1985. He then married Gladys Ziegler on Nov. 2, 1985. She died in 1998.

Survivors include three sons, James Sower, Don Sower and Vernon Sower, all of Bayfield; a daughter, Janet Vaughan, of Farmington, N.M.; a sister, Shirley Graham, of Lakin, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Shirley Wright of Petaluma, Calif., and Patty Brown of Star Valley, Ariz.; and a stepson, Calvin Ziegler of Urban, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301 or to the Patrick W. Luter Cancer Center, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Howard Damon Dalton

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Greenmount Cemetery for Howard Damon Dalton, a veteran of the navy, who died Sunday, June 27, 1999 after a long illness. He was 64.

The Veterans of Foreign War Post 4031 will officiate the crematory services at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Dalton was born Sept. 13, 1934 in San Diego. He married Goldie Imel Dalton.

Mr. Dalton was in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 4031. He was a bus and truck driver. He was preceded in death by his brother, Doren Lee Dalton.

He is survived by his wife, Goldie, of Durango; two sisters, Dorothy Ballard of Suffolk, Va., and Shirley Brenton of Everett, Wash.; four stepchildren; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

George J. H. Zelle

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Steed-Todd Chapel for George J. H. Zelle, of Clovis, N.M., who died Saturday, June 26, 1999 in his home. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 79.

Chaplain David Park will officiate. Burial will be at St. Rose Catholic Cemetery in Perry, Okla. with graveside services at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Zelle was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Hayward, Okla. He married Helen Harkins on May 13, 1947 in Enid, Okla. He married Dorothy Pierce Sept. 18, 1971. Mr. Zelle served with the United States Air Force for 30 years. He was a glider pilot instructor in 1941. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3280. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1971.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Clovis, N.M.; one stepdaughter, Dona Kay Guy of Durango; two stepsons; two nieces and one nephew.

Memorials may be made to the Steed-Todd Funeral Home, 800 E. Manana, Clovis, NM 88101.

Ruth Colby

Ruth Colby, a longtime Durango resident, died of a heart attack May 26, 1999, in Apache Junction, Ariz. She was 75.

Mrs. Colby was born July 23, 1923, in Adams County, Iowa. She was a homemaker and lived in Durango for 39 years. She moved from Durango to Arizona in 1989.

She is survived by a daughter, Nola Pope of Durango; a daughter, Judy Adams of Apache Junction; son Ron Colby of Virginia; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Lila May Wagner

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Lila May Wagner, a lifelong area resident, who died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, in her Ignacio home after a bout with cancer. She was 69.

The Rev. Roedell Schmitt will officiate at services.

Mrs. Wagner was born Lila May Parks on Jan. 20, 1930, in Bayfield. She married Roy R. Wagner on Oct. 22, 1948.

Mrs. Wagner was born and raised on the HD Cattle Ranch in Bayfield. She was a graduate of Ignacio High School and attended Fort Lewis College, at both the Hesperus and Durango campuses, and Adams State College. She taught school in Ignacio and worked at the Bank of Ignacio for 22 years. She attended Zion Baptist Church in Ignacio.

She is survived by her husband, Roy, of Ignacio; a brother, Henry Parks of Bayfield; a daughter, Verda Wright of Conifer; three sons, Kenneth Wagner and Herald Wagner of Ignacio and Milton Wagner of Arboles; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
