Paul George Semler
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Paul George Semler, who died Sunday, April 4, 1999, of liver cancer at his home in Ignacio. He was 78.
Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Burial will follow at Ignacio (Protestant) Cemetery.
Mr. Semler was born March 29, 1921, north of Ignacio in Zabel Canyon, Spring Creek. His parents were area pioneers, Gustav J. and Martha L. Semler. He began farming at the age of 13 and continued until he was 17.
He logged lumber in Chama for two more years, and then joined himself into the U.S. Army despite a toe he lost while logging.
He was stationed in Guadalcanal for 4½ years in the medical supplies unit. While in the Army, he sold handmade jewelry crafted from sea shells that enabled him to purchase his farm in Ignacio in 1945.
On May 28, 1947, Mr. Semler married Evelyn Y. Wade in Ignacio. They worked together farming while Mr. Semler also worked at El Paso Natural Gas for four years.
Mr. Semler was instrumental in initiating Basin Co-op. He also served as president of Morrison Consolidated Ditch Company. He trapped furs from 1970 to 1980 while farming.Mr. Semler retired in 1994 and enjoyed his hobbies of hunting, fishing and gardening until his death.
He was preceded in death by a son, Herbert A. Semler.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Y. Semler of Ignacio; a son, Willard "Willie" Semler of Ignacio; two daughters, Nadine "Sis" I. DeGiulio of Pingree, Idaho, and Lynn "Bug" M. Michalke of Alamosa; a sister, Betty L. Bishop of Olathe; two brothers, William E. Semler of Bayfield and Michael D. Semler of Sheridan, Wyo.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Juanita May Gambill Eagles
Services will be held in Missouri at a later date for Juanita May Gambill Eagles, who died Saturday, April 3, 1999, in Durango. She was 87.
Mrs. Eagles was born May 30, 1911, in Dade County, Mo. She was a resident of Durango for 32 years. She married John Scott Eagles on May 15, 1930, in Greenfield, Mo.
Mrs. Eagles was a cook and waitress at the old truck stop in Durango for many years. She was an avid fisherman.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 9, 1977.
Survivors include her son, Johnny M. Eagles of Orange, Calif.; two daughters, Carol I. Lembke and Georgia A. Carroll, both of Durango; a brother, Royal A. Gambill of Lamar, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The cause of death was not available.
Sharon Anne Stout
Memorial services were held March 25 in San Francisco for Sharon Anne Stout, daughter of Terry and Sue Stout of Durango, who died Sunday, March 21, 1999, from injuries sustained in a fall at her home in San Francisco. She was 19.
Her ashes were scattered in San Francisco Bay on March 27.
Sharon was born May 28, 1979, in San Francisco. She graduated in 1997 from the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco. Sharon spent her summers and Christmas vacations in Durango since 1992, when her family moved here from San Francisco. Prior to 1992, she lived with her father and step-mother under a shared custody agreement.
Survivors include her father and step-mother, Terry and Sue Stout of Durango; her step-brother, Joshua Stout of Durango; her mother and step-father, Colleen and Roger Sasso of San Francisco; and her sister, Audrey Stout of San Francisco.
Wallace Wayne Adams
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church of Durango for Wallace Adams of Durango, who died Saturday, April 2, 1999, from cancer. He was 78.
The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate, and burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mr. Adams was born in Solon, Iowa, graduated from the University of Iowa and served in the Army Air Corps. for four years as a weather forecaster. He was active in the 406th Fighter Group and helped forecast the weather for the Normandy invasion.
Mr. Adams married Billie Wyatt in Caracas, Venezuela, on June 21, 1946.
He worked for Carter Oil Co. as a geologist for 35 years. He was a founding member of the Iowa Mountaineers, a member of the First Presbyterian Church and belonged to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He loved mountain climbing, skiing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Adams of Durango; daughters, Caroni Adams of Durango, Melda Garfield of Kingwood, Texas, Whitney Hawley of Salt Lake City, and Marty Schueller of Mequon, Wisconsin; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kathryn Sanders Oliver
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at First Baptist Church in Bayfield for Kate Oliver, who died Saturday, April 3, in Bronte, Texas. She was 86.The cause of death was unknown
The Rev. Tim Sandy will officiate, and burial will follow at Pine River Valley Cemetery
in Bayfield.
Mrs. Oliver was born in Nolan County, Texas, on June 16, 1912. She married Homer Oliver in Sweetwater, Texas, on December 22, 1933.
The Olivers farmed and ranched in Nolan County until they moved to La Plata County and the Pine River Valley in 1952. They lived on their ranch north of Bayfield until they retired in 1972. From then until Mr. Oliver’s death in 1988, they spent summers in Colorado and winters in Texas.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father. She is survived by sons, Alfred Oliver of Bronte, Texas, and Charles Oliver of Bayfield; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Pine River Public Library in Bayfield.
William A. Jenkins Jr.
Memorial services are pending for William A. Jenkins Jr., a longtime La Plata County resident, who died May 26, 1999, while fishing off the coast of Belize, Central America with a group from Durango. He was 72.
Mr. Jenkins was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Beggs, Okla. He was a veteran of the Air Force and served in WWII. He was a geologist for the oil and gas industry.
He was a graduate of Oklahoma State University in 1950 and a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.
He was also a former elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, Okla.
He lived near Vallecito Reservoir since 1976 and was an independent oil and gas producer in the Four Corners for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Vallecito Reservoir and Scottsdale, Ariz.; sons, William Jenkins III of Durango, and S. Nicholson Jenkins of Carlsbad, Calif, formerly of Durango; a brother, R. Lee Jenkins of Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Jerry Umbah of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Grace Garner of Dodge City, Kan.; and four grandchildren, Amanda and Jessica Jenkins of Stillwater, Okla., Tyler Jenkins of Durango and Chase Jenkins of Carlsbad, Calif.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ R. Winner
Gerald "Jerry" R. Winner died Friday, May 21, 1999, at his home in St. George, Utah, after a battle with cancer. He was 72.
Mr. Winner was born May 27, 1926, in Durango. He married Shirley "Jo" Rose-Winner on May 29, 1982, in Aurora, where they made their home until moving to St. George in 1990.
Mr. Winner is survived by his wife, Jo; a son, John Winner; five step-children, Michelle Wheatley of Oceanside, Calif., Michael Bernard of Seattle, Mark Winner of Boulder, Gun/Sgt. Todd Ruff of Oahu, Hawaii, and Holly Burns of Aurora; a step-grandson, Eric Ruff of California; a brother, Jack Winner of Durango; a niece, Cyd Waddell of Durango; a nephew, Bill Winner of Durango and numerous other relatives.
At Mr. Winner’s request, there will be no services.
Cleah Johnson
Services will be 10 a.m. today at Christ The King Lutheran Church for Cleah Johnson, a longtime Durango resident, who died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 88.
The Rev. John Knutson will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was born Cleah Johnson on Aug. 17, 1910, in Manassa. She married Dr. Cyrus Johnson in 1929.
Mrs. Johnson belonged to the Neo Delphian Club and other bridge clubs. She received numerous awards for her bridge-playing, and was well-known through her late husband’s work as a dentist. She was a charter member of Christ The King Lutheran Church and active in the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Garden Club.
She is survived by her half-brother, Pete Johnson of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a half-sister, Nelda Maxwell of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four grandchildren, Lawrence Larry Johnson and Sandra Peterson, both of Durango, Robert Johnson of Aurora and Sherrie Martin of Colorado Springs; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus, and her son, Wayne Johnson.
