Willette H. Wood

A memorial graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park in Tuscaloosa, Ala., for Willette H. Wood, who died Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Durango. She was 86.

Mrs. Wood was born Oct. 8, 1912, in Corona, Ala. She married Charles C. Wood on July 4, 1937, in Jasper, Ala. He preceded her in death in May 1978. Mrs. Wood moved to Durango in 1992 to be near her children.

She is survived by a daughter, Jan Brown of Durango; two sons, Don Wood of Farmington and B.J. Harris of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Hazel Myers of Birmingham, Ala., six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Cause of death was not available.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 N. Main Ave., Durango CO 81301.

James E. Stinson

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for James E. Stinson, who died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Durango. He was 82.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. Visitation will be 1:30-5:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mr. Stinson was born Nov. 10, 1916, in Durango. He was a rancher in the Hesperus area.

Mr. Stinson was a member of the Marvel Grange No. 479 and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed fly-fishing and hunting elk.

Survivors include his wife, Lois M. Frame Stinson of Hesperus; daughters, Marie Conner of Farmington, N.M., and Judy Crocker of Montrose; son, James R. Stinson of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Bonnie Meredith of California; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

Margret T. Perez

Services will be 11 a.m. today at St. Mary’s in Bloomfield, N.M., for Margret T. Perez, who died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Farmington, N.M. She was 37.

The Rev. Dan Daley will officiate. Cremation is with the Alternative Society, and her ashes will be spread in the mountains that she loved this spring.

A rosary was held Jan. 29.

Ms. Perez was born April 21, 1961. She was a former resident of Durango.

Survivors include her parents, Joe G. and Ruby C. Perez; grandmother, Sophie French; sisters, Debra K. Miller and Ruby Jo Calderon; nephews, David and Adam; great-nephew, Joseph Lee; and nieces, Ashley, Sydney, Jennifer, Ynez, Pati and Gabriela.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

The cause of death was not available.

Willard Weaver ‘Bill’ Rusk Jr.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ertel Memorial Chapel for Willard Weaver "Bill" Rusk Jr., who died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Cortez. He was 80.

The Rev. Gerald Andrews will officiate. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Mr. Rusk was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Denver. On Oct. 25, 1945, he married Thelma A. Slack in Aztec, N.M. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado and University of Colorado School of Law. Gov. John Love appointed Mr. Rusk as the first district judge of the newly formed 22nd Judicial District.

He was preceded in death by his son, Willard W. Rusk III.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma of Cortez; brother, David Rusk of Littleton, Colo.; nephew, Willard G. Rusk of Fremont, Calif.; and niece, Mary Margaret Rusk of Englewood, Colo.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, c/o Citizens State Bank of Cortez, Drawer T, Cortez, CO 81321.

Raymond Sanford Murray

Raymond Sanford Murray, a lifetime resident of the Four Corners area, died Tuesday, January 26, 1999, in Durango. He was 85.

No services are planned at this time. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory. Mr. Murray was born November 19, 1913, in Chama, N.M. He was a retired conductor from the D&RGW Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Gilbert Murray; his mother, Flossie Belle Murray; and his wife Lottie Murray. He is survived by his son, Adrian Murray of Colorado Springs; a stepson, Harold McConnell of Durango; two grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Harold D. Stauffer

Harold D. Stauffer, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, died
Jan. 24, 1999, in Durango. He was 79.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Stauffer was born Feb. 2, 1919 in Ignacio, where he attended school. He was a graduate of Ignacio High School. He served as a first lieutenant in the Air Force during World War II. After graduating from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, he received a degree in dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Stauffer practiced dentistry in Colorado Springs for 40 years, before retiring to Tucson, Ariz. He returned to the Durango area one year ago.

He is survived by his sister, Jessie M. Hott of Ignacio; two nieces, Margaret Sterling of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Peggy Phebus of Littleton,Colo.; and a nephew, Robert Hott of Ignacio. He is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews.

Fred E. Binnette

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Crestview Cemetery in Durango for Fred E. Binnette, who died January 25, 1999 in Farmington. He was 90. Mr. Binnette was born on January 19, 1909 St. Louis, Mo. He lived in the Farmington area for 30 years. He enjoyed oil painting.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; and his parents Edward and Gertrude Binnette. He is survived by a son, James Binnette of Kirtland, N.M.; a daughter, Necia Keith and her husband Jim, of Long Grove, Okla.; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Grace Wallace

Grace Wallace died Monday, January 11, 1999 at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 89.

Ms. Wallace was born in 1909 in Clinton, Mo. She was employed as a school teacher for many years. Ms. Wallace was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Ray Romine. She is survived by two sons, Raymond Romine of Pagosa Springs, and Lawrence M. Romine of Los Angeles, Calif.; five grandchildren, Marvin Lee Romine of Oklahoma City, Okla.; James E. Romine of Atlanta, Ga.; Robert Ray Romine of Pagosa Springs; and Gerald Romine of Panama City, Fla.; 12 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Violet Louise Gwaltney

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 29, 1999 for Violet Louise Gwaltney, of Durango, who died Tuesday, January 26, 1999 of a heart attack. She was 78.

The Rev. Larry Osborne will officiate at services. Interment will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Mrs. Gwaltney was born in 1920 in La Plata, NM. She graduated from Durango High School in 1937 and worked for Pennington Photography Studio as a dark room technician until World War II. During the war, she was a professional photographer in Long Beach, California where she married Captain Laverne Gwaltney in 1947. They lived in Tucson, Ariz. where they built an adobe house together. She spent much of her early life and all of her later years ranching and raising cattle near Durango on the Steward Ranch that has been in her family for over 100 years. Mrs. Gwaltney received the Western Heritage Service Award in 1992, and recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1998. She remained active in the ranching business until her death.

She is survived by her husband Laverne Gwaltney of Durango; a daughter, Bonnie Brennan of Durango; a brother, Chester Steward of Farmington, NM,; and cousins Shirley Jones and Dorothy Peipenbrink, both of California.

Jack LePlatt

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Friday, January 29, 1999 at Church of Christ in Bayfield for Jack LePlatt, who died January 25, 1999 in Bayfield. He was 74. The Rev. Dan Straw and Mr. Gene Chapin will officiate at the ceremony. Visitation will be today until 8:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary. Interment will be at Bayfield Cemetery.

Mr. LePlatt was born February 11, 1924 in Rockyford, Colo. He married Jewell Ludwig on March 22, 1946 at Alameda, Calif.

Mr. LePlatt lived in the Bayfield area since 1939 and was active in local industry and community organizations. He was a boardmember for La Plata Electric for 12 years, on the Durango La Plata Airport Commission for 11 years, a member of the Bayfield Lions Club for 34 years, director of Pine River Valley Bank for 21 years, and was a member of the Church of Christ in Bayfield. Mr. Leplatt worked as an architect in the Navy during World War II and in Clovis, NM before moving to Bayfield. He ranched in the Bayfield area from 1949 to 1961 and in 1962 started the LePlatt Propane business and retired in 1982. He was awarded the Colorado landowner of the year award through the Game and Fish Department. He enjoyed oil painting, fishing, scuba diving and flying.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jewell Ludwig, of Bayfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Herb and Betsy LePlatt, of Chanhassen,Minn.; two brothers, Richard LePlatt of Truth or Consequences, NM; and Harold LePlatt of Monte Vista, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made to the Jack LePlatt Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Pine River Valley Bank, P.O. Box 500, Bayfield, Colo., 81122.

Beverly C. Powell Conway

Jan. 24, 1999

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Williams Catholic Church in Shelby, Mont., for Beverly C. Powell Conway, who died of natural causes Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at the Marias Care Center in Shelby, Mont. She was 72.

The Rev. Carl Deitchman will officiate. Committal will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Shelby.

Mrs. Conway was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Los Angeles, Calif. The family then moved to Durango, where she was raised and educated. She met Joe Conway, and they were married in 1948. They later divorced.

Mrs. Conway worked as a bookkeeper in Durango and later in Fort Collins, Colo., where she moved in 1979. She retired in 1988 and moved to Shelby. She was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marian.

Survivors include her sons, Steve Conway of Fort Collins and Danny Conway of Bayfield; daughter, Debra Clark of Shelby, Mont.; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Williams Catholic Church.
