Richard M. Lopez

Oct. 17, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter-St. Rosa Catholic Church for Richard M. Lopez, who died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in Farmington, N.M. He was 68.

The Rev. John Bowe will officiate. Burial will be at Rosa Cemetery in Arboles. Rosary service will be 6 p.m. today at the church. Mr. Lopez was born March 6, 1930, in Arboles. He was a lifetime area resident.

Mr. Lopez served in the U.S. Army in Korea, in which he became disabled for life. He farmed his property when able.

Survivors include his brothers, Tony Lopez of Denver, Colo., Daniel Lopez of Baltimore, Md., Lee Lopez of Las Vegas, Nev., Manuel R. Lopez of Seattle, Wash., and Pedro F. Lopez of Arboles; sisters, Florence Vallejos of Ignacio, Angelina Barela of Albuquerque, N.M., and Elesida Enriquez of Durango; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The cause of death was not available.

Clara Ellen McCord Funderburk

Oct. 11, 1998

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allnutt Funeral Service Macy Chapel in Greeley for Clara Ellen McCord Funderburk, who died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, in Amarillo, Texas. She was 84.

Mrs. Funderburk was born Oct. 15, 1913, in Osawatomie, Kan. In 1919, she moved to Durango. She graduated from Durango High School and from Fort Lewis College with an associate of arts degree. After teaching grade school from 1933 to 1935 in Rockwood, Colo., she attended Colorado State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1937.

Mrs. Funderburk completed a dietetic internship at the University Hospital of University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1938 and became a registered dietitian. She worked as an administrative and teaching dietitian at a hospital in Philadelphia, Pa.; as a therapeutic dietitian at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, New York, and as home management supervisor in the Farm Security Program of the Department of Agriculture in Grand Junction.

She married Earl W. Funderburk Jan. 1, 1942, in Durango. During World War II, while Mr. Funderburk was in the Army, she worked at the University of Washington and North Dakota A. and M.

In 1963, Mrs. Funderburk received a master of arts degree in home economics from the University of Northern Colorado and joined the faculty as associate professor of home economics. She also served as department chairperson for several years, retiring with the title of Emeritus in 1973. She continued as an instructor for Morgan Community College and field representative for the Weld County Council on Aging until 1978, when she became fully retired. She was a member of numerous professional organizations and volunteered for many nonprofit organizations. She moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1995.

Survivors include her husband, Earl of Amarillo, Texas; daughters, Ruth Ellen van der Maas of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Earlene Kay Steffensmeier of Canyon, Texas; one grandson and two step-grandchildren.

Donations may be made to memorial scholarship funds at the University of Northern Colorado or Fort Lewis College, c/o Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631.

The cause of death was not available.

Marjorie J. Muehlstedt

Oct. 13, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Marjorie J. Muehlstedt, who died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in Durango. She was 84.

Kay James will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Muehlstedt was born Nov. 28, 1913, in Long Beach, Calif. She married Verne Muehlstedt Nov. 28, 1935, in Riverside, Calif.

Mrs. Muehlstedt was a homemaker. She was chairman of the Motor Corps with the Red Cross during World War II. She enjoyed antiques and collectibles.

Survivors include her husband, Verne Muehlstedt of Durango; son, Bill Muehlstedt of Durango; daughter, Joan Harris of Los Alamitos, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Caren C. Kessel

Oct. 13, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Red Mesa for Caren C. Kessel, who died Tuesday Oct. 13, 1998, in Durango. She was 49.

Bishop Del A. Talley will officiate. Burial will be at Kline Cemetery in Kline, Colo.

Mrs. Kessel was born June 12, 1949, in Mesa Ariz. She married Arden L. Kessel Sept. 21, 1968 in Mesa Ariz.

Mrs. Kessel was a homemaker who practiced the Mormon faith. She was president of the relief society, young womens and primary. She was a chorister, organist and teacher of classes. She was a Boy and Girl Scout leader, a member of the election board and the school booster club, as well as a St. Jude Representative.

Survivors include her husband Arden Kessel of Hesperus; daughters, Arlana Noisom and Marissa Kessel of Hesperus; son, Arlyn of Hesperus; sister, Cherryl Beal of Kamas Utah; brothers Kayle McNeil of Lakeside Ariz. and Randy McDowell of Mesa, Ariz.

Cause of death was not disclosed.

Lydia I. Temple

Oct. 12, 1998

Private family services are planned for Lydia I. Temple, who died after a battle with cancer Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at her daughter’s home in Maryland where she was visiting. She was 78.

Mrs. Temple was born in 1920 in Aberdeen, Wash. She married Carl J. Temple in 1945.

Mr. and Mrs. Temple moved to Durango with their two daughters in 1960 when Mr. Temple was transferred by the J.C. Penney company.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992.

Survivors include her daughters, Katherine Adler of Highland, Md., and Barbara Tankey of Austin, Texas; sister, Leona Meldrich of Aberdeen, Wash.; and two grandsons.

Memorial donations may be made to the La Plata County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Dennis R. Hood

Oct. 7, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Dennis R. Hood, who died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in Durango. He was 95.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Hood was born Nov. 27, 1902, in Kenefic, Okla., and was raised on a ranch in Oklahoma. He married Ollie Phelps Jan. 11, 1925, in Mill Creek, Okla.

Mr. Hood taught in the public schools then in the civil service at several Air Force bases in the United States. He and his wife moved to Alaska and taught with the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF&AM, First United Methodist Church, Consistory and the Shriners.

Survivors include his wife, Ollie Phelps Hood of Durango; son, John Hood of Durango; sisters, Jonnie Bell Ratcliff of Dallas, Texas, Pallie Terry of Franklin, La., Lois Hood and Kathleen Pullen, both of Pilot Point, Texas; four grandchildren and six great-granddaughters.

Memorial donations may be made to the Shrine Burn and Crippled Children’s Centers, 2900 Rockpoint Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Louise Elizabeth Binnette

Oct. 6, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cope Memorial Chapel in Farmington for Louise Elizabeth Binnette, who died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. She was 89.

The Rev. Paul Glover will officiate. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Crestview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in rural La Plata County. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today at Cope Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Binnette was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post in Durango.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Binnette of Bloomfield, N.M.; children, Charles E. Bennett of Cedar Hill, Doris Parker of Roosevelt, Utah, and adopted daughters, Jeanine Paul Christman of Santa Fe, N.M., and Betty Collins of Bloomfield, N.M.; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Eduvigen Trujillo Gallegos

Oct. 3, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Eduvigen Trujillo Gallegos, who died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, in Durango.

She was 86.

The Rev. Eddie Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Bayfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be today at Hood Mortuary. Rosary service will be 6 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel.

Mrs. Gallegos was born Feb. 25, 1912, in Lone Tree, Colo.

She was a resident of Ignacio.

Mrs. Gallegos was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

Survivors include her sons, Jose Rogue Gallegos of Eaton, Colo., and Aurelio Gallegos of Farmington, N.M.; daughter, Sara Romero of Newarki, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, including Lillie Chaulklin, who was raised by her grandparents; 21 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.
