Ethel Lois Morton

Oct. 27, 1998

A private memorial service will be held Saturday in Quincy, Mo., for Ethel Lois Morton, who died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, of natural causes at The Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, Mo. She was 95.

Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Hollywood Hills-Forest Lawn Cemetery in Burbank, Calif.

Mrs. Morton was born Oct. 26, 1903, in El Reno, Okla. She married Oscar S. Morton July 26, 1935, in Tulsa, Okla.

Mrs. Morton was a homemaker. She was a former church secretary for the First Christian Church in Tulsa and a preschool teacher for children with Down’s syndrome in Ontario, Calif. Mrs. Morton also attended the First Baptist Church in Van Nuys, Calif., and Durango.

She lived in Ontario, Calif., from 1951 to 1971; Van Nuys, Calif., until 1985 and at Tamarin Square in Durango and Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Aztec from 1983 to 1998. Earlier this year, she moved to Quincy, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977.

Survivors include her son, John Morton of Quincy, Mo.; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and brother, Wayne Beebe of Tulsa, Okla.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Quincy, Mo.

Grace Elouise Carder

Oct. 26, 1998

Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Lutheran Church for Grace Elouise Carder, who died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, in Durango. She was 84.

The Rev. John Knutson will officiate. Burial will be Friday at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque, N.M.

Ms. Carder was born July 5, 1914, in Butte, Mont. She graduated from South High in Denver. She spent most of her life in San Francisco area.

Ms. Carder was an executive secretary for Van Ness Oldsmobile for about 50 years. She moved to Durango in 1992 to be near family.

She was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church and a volunteer at the Manna Soup Kitchen.

Survivors include her nephew, John A. Carder of Nederland, Colo.; nieces, Sarah Dalen and Mary Kruse, both of Durango and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.

Memorial donations may be made to Manna Soup Kitchen, P.O. Box 1196, Durango, CO 81302.

The cause of death was not available.

Richard Fredrick Holland

Oct. 22, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church in Englewood, Colo., for Richard Fredrick Holland, who died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, in Durango. He was 75.

The Rev. Robert Cooper will officiate. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver.

Mr. Holland was born May 8, 1923, in Glendo, Wyo. His family moved to Colorado when he was 2 years old. He graduated from South High School in Denver.

Mr. Holland served four years in the Navy during World War II. He married Ida Mae Crocker Nov. 25, 1948, in Chillicothe, Texas.

Mr. Holland was a pastor with Southern Baptist Churches and was a barber throughout his life. He and his wife lived in the Denver area until 1977. While in Colorado, he was active in the Pioneer Southern Baptist Mission work for 25 years, and built church buildings in Burlington and Brighton. He then served as pastor of churches in Oklahoma and Texas. The Hollands became house parents at Buckner Boys Ranch in Burnett, Texas, retiring in 1987. Mr. Holland then retired to Marble Falls, Texas, where he and his wife lived until moving to Durango earlier this month to be near their daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Mae Holland of Durango; children, Rick Holland of Denver, Colo., David Holland of Yakima, Wash., Janice Johnson of Durango and John Holland of N’Djamena, Chad, Africa; sisters, Ila Hayhurst, Myrtle Phillips and Ruth Westfall, all of Denver, and Rebecca Humrich of Lymon, Colo.; brother, Marlo Holland of Englewood, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The cause of death was not available.

Charles R. ‘Dick’ Bauma

Oct. 12, 1998

A memorial service was held Oct. 15 at The Christ Way Community Church for Charles R. "Dick" Bauma, who died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Englewood, Colo. He was 78.

There was cremation.

Mr. Bauma was born May 19, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo. He married Janet A. Addy Oct. 11, 1940, in Princeton, Mo.

He was a retired U.S. Army Colonel, serving in Korea and World War II.

Mr. Bauma was employed as an insurance agent. He was a resident of Parker, Colo. He and his wife lived in Durango from 1989 to 1991.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet in November 1994.

Survivors include his daughters, Judy King of Durango and Jill Cackowski of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; son, Rick Bauma of Arvada, Colo.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice or to the La Plata County Humane Society.

The cause of death was not available.

Dorine Marie Holdman

Oct. 24, 1998

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Perryton, Texas, for Dorine Marie Holdman, who died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, in Perryton, Texas, after a lengthy illness. She was 65.

The Rev. Ted Latham will officiate. Burial will be at Ochiltree Cemetery. Mrs. Holdman was born May 28, 1933, in Perryton, Texas. She married Jim Holdman April 6, 1955, in Carlsbad, N.M. She had moved from Ignacio to Perryton, Texas.

Mrs. Holdman was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perryton. She was an accomplished artist and loved to read.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Haskal R. Holdman and Amon J. Holdman.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Holdman of Perryton, Texas; daughter, Nina Lynn Wright of Ignacio; brother, J.T. Wright of Perryton, Texas; sister, Euella Spoonmore, who lives near Austin, Texas; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons, American Diabetes Association or the First Baptist Church, designated to the construction of the Belarus, Russia, Baptist Church.

Leo Oleskevich

Oct. 22, 1998

A memorial Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church for Leo Oleskevich, manager of City Market for 30 years, who died in his home Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, after an extended illness. He was 79.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. Mr. Oleskevich was born Aug. 13, 1919, in Chicago. He married his wife, Delores, in 1944. From 1950 until 1980 he served as manager of the City Market in Durango. For 46 years he volunteered at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center.

Mr. Oleskevich was a former Exalted Ruler of the B.P.O. Elks and a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Durango Area Chamber Resort Association Board of Directors, the city of Durango Board of Adjustment, and was a member of the Fort Lewis College Booster Club. He was an active member of St. Columba and was past president of Hillcrest Golf Club.

Mr. Oleskevich is survived by his wife; two sons, Jim of St. Louis and Bob of Grand Junction; a sister, Ciola Sacke of Arvada; three brothers, Ed Oleskevich of Lakewood, Charlie Olesky of Belleview, Fla., and Chet Olesky of Sacramento, Calif.; two granddaughters; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Marjorie A. Sylvia

Oct. 15, 1998

Funeral services will be at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in Orange City, Fla., for Marjorie A. Sylvia, a retired public school teacher who taught in Massachusetts and Colorado, who died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in DeLand, Fla. She was 93.

Ms. Sylvia was born in Bayfield before moving to Durango. She moved from Durango to Orange City, Fla., in 1979. Ms. Sylvia was a member of the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand, Fla., the Church Guild and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She is survived by Phillip Anderson of Rockford, Mich., David Anderson of Coopersville, Mich., and Charles Anderson of Colorado Springs.

Contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Church School Scholarship Fund, 319 West Wisconsin Ave., DeLand, Fla., 32720.
