Kenneth Carroll ‘K.C.’ Schultz III
June 5, 1998

Services will be 1 p.m. today at New Life Chapel for Kenneth Carroll "K.C." Schultz III, who died Friday, June 5, 1998, in Bellevue, Neb. He was 23.

Chaplain Capt. Donovan Gaffney will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mr. Schultz was born March 24, 1975, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1993.

He married Lauri Jaworsky on March 11, 1995, in Durango.

Mr. Schultz joined the U.S. Air Force in May 1995, and specialized in maintenance of aircraft computers.

Survivors include his wife, Lauri of Nebraska; parents, Ken Schultz and wife, Jody of Durango and Mary A. Mullen of Los Alamos, N.M.; brother, Lukas Schultz of Durango; sister, Kayla Schultz of Durango; and grandparents, Ken and Elaine Schultz of Aztec, N.M., and William Laspe of Denver.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 931, Durango, CO 81302 or the Civil Air Patrol, San Juan Composite Squadron, 1911-B Main Ave., Suite 106, Durango, CO 81301.

The cause of death was not available at press time.

Lenora Marjorie ‘Dodie’ Bonan
June 1, 1998

A memorial service will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Cortez for Lenora Marjorie "Dodie" Bonan, who died Monday, June 1, 1998. She was 85.

The Rev. Jerry McKenzie will officiate, assisted by Deacon Cindy Irvin. Refreshments will be served in Mary Blake Hall following the service. Mrs. Bonan was born July 25, 1912, in Mancos. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldo Bonan; and infant son, Jared Bonan.

Survivors include her sister, Ola Giacomelli of Cortez; children, Robert "Bob" Bonan of Fort Collins, Colo., and Beverly "Betsy" Jones of Cortez; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established at Citizens State Bank.

Walter G. Berl

Oct. 24, 1998

Walter G. Berl of Bethesda, Md., died suddenly of heart failure on Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, while visiting Durango with his wife, Shirley Anne Hargraves. He was 81. The death occurred at the home of his step-son, R.T. Zak Hargraves.

Dr. Berl was born July 3, 1917, in Vienna, Austria. He came to the United States in 1933 when his father, Professor Ernest Berl, was appointed to the faculty of Carnegie Technological Institute, now Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, Pa. He earned degrees in physical chemistry at Carnegie Tech and at Harvard University in 1937, 1939 and 1941.

Dr. Berl retired from the principal staff of The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in 1994 after 49 years of employment there. His particular field of interest was combustion and fire science.

His hobbies included books, music, the New York Times crossword puzzle, tennis and hunting for wild mushrooms, especially in Durango, where he and his wife own property.

In retirement, his most recent accomplishment was the publication of the Journal of the Cosmos Club of Washington, of which he was the editor. He was a member of several scientific organizations.

In addition to his wife, Shirley Anne Hargraves, survivors include a brother, Herbert Berl of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Kathleen Victorino of Bethesda, Md., and Boston, Mass.; step-children, Cynthia Tobin of Blue Hill, Maine, and R.T. Zak Hargraves of Durango; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

John William Wallace

Oct. 31, 1998

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez for John William Wallace, who died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, at his home in Arriola, Colo. He was 73.

The Rev. Jimmy Kennedy officiated.

Mr. Wallace was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Dell Wallace, of Cortez; son, David Wallace of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Mary Hedric of Edgewood, N.M., Kathleen Barcus of Durango and Mildred A. "Polly" Darrah of Roswell, N.M.; brother, Ned Wallace of Durango; one granddaughter; one grandson and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez, CO 81321 or to the First Southern Baptist Church Building Fund, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez, CO 81321.

John Burton "Jack" Herrick

Oct. 29, 1998

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Elks Lodge for John Burton "Jack" Herrick, a former logger, construction worker and foreman, who died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998 in Durango. He was 69.

Mr. Herrick was born July 15, 1929, in Athens, Pa., and moved to Norwood, Colo., at age 3 months. He married Virginia Watson on September 20, 1953, at Nucla, Colo.

After attending grade school and high school in Norwood, Mr. Herrick worked as a logger, built houses, and built culverts and steel buildings as a foreman for Mesa Pipe & Bridge Co. of Grand Junction for 13 years. He moved to Durango with his family in 1969 and worked for 12 years in the floor covering business in Durango. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling with his wife in the couple’s motorhome.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Durango; a son, David Herrick, of Durango; a daughter, Carolyn Hately, of Durango; a brother, William Herrick, of Grand Junction, Colo., two sisters, Molly McCall, of Farmington, N.M., and Leona Tate, of Farmington, N.M.; and four grandchildren.

A reception will follow at the Durango Elks Lodge and the public is invited.

The cause of death was unavailable.

Cecilio Arsenio Sanchez

Oct. 28, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Bayfield for Cecilio Arsenio Sanchez, who died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at his home in Bayfield. He was 86.

The Rev. Eddie Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery.

Mr. Sanchez was born Nov. 22, 1911, in La Sevillo, N.M. He married Rufugio "Ruth" Garcia April 20, 1929, in Tierra Amarillo, N.M.

Mr. Sanchez was a lumberman throughout his life, and also worked for the WPA for many years.

Mr. Sanchez was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, in which he helped build.

He was preceded in death by his wife Aug. 26, 1981.

Survivors include his children, Virginia Martinez and Gilbert Sanchez, both of Bayfield, Alicia "Alice" Marquez and Lawrence O. Garcia, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, Felix D. Sanchez of West Valley, Utah, and Dorothy Favela of Victorville, Calif.; sisters, Arbelia Vigil of Santa Fe, N.M., Madeline Martinez and Beatrice Cordova, both of Tierra Amarillo, N.M., and Geri Velasquez of Denver, Colo.; 34 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

The cause of death was not available.

Fidel J. Lucero

Oct. 27, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Fidel J. Lucero, who died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, in Durango. He was 79.

The Rev. Eddie Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Ignacio Protestant Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the Mass.

Mr. Lucero was born July 28, 1919, in Durango. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he moved to Ignacio. Mr. Lucero was a longtime resident of Ignacio.

Mr. Lucero was an avid animal lover who enjoyed working with his animals on his farm.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Lucero of Ignacio; son, Nicholas of Ignacio; daughters, Ruth Lucero and Olivia Lucero of Farmington, N.M.; brothers, Rueben Lucero and Albert Lucero, both of Boulder City, Nev.; sister, Teresa Lucero of Las Vegas, Nev.; uncle, Tobe Pacheco of Farmington, N.M.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

John Daniel McManus

Oct. 22, 1998

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for John Daniel McManus, who died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, in Oxford. He was 45.

The Rev. Eddie Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery.

Mr. McManus was born Feb. 6, 1953, in Lynwood, Calif. He was a longtime area resident.

Survivors include his mother, Juanita McManus of Oxford; brothers, Michael McManus and Terence McManus, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Patrick McManus of Oxford; sisters, Mary Anne Adair of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kathleen McManus of Oxford; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.
