Rachel Ann Hill
June 21, 1998

A memorial gathering will be 4 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Rachel Ann Hill, who died Sunday, June 21, 1998, drowning in the Animas River. She was 36.

Bishop Jack Davison will officiate. There will be cremation.

Mrs. Hill was born July 31, 1961, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Washington, D.C. She moved to Durango in 1992.

On Jan. 30, 1997, she married Stanley Bryant Hill in Durango.

Mrs. Hill enjoyed time in the outdoors hiking and camping, helping people in need and spending time with her son. She had a talent for art design and crafts.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Hill of Durango; son, Adrian Burd of Durango and his father, Mike Burd of Durango; and sister, Ruth Doherty of Washington, D.C.

William Alexander Fasolo
June 21, 1998

No services are planned at this time for William Alexander Fasolo, who died Sunday, June 21, 1998, in Durango after a lengthy illness. He was 83.

Mr. Fasolo was born May 15, 1915, in New York, N.Y. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1938 and Harvard School of Law in 1942. He was a member of the New Jersey and New York Bar associations. He practiced law in Hackensack, N.J., with the firm Fasolo, Krause and Dexter from 1945 to 1980.

Mr. Fasolo served as borough attorney in Milford, N.J., from 1951 to 1963 and borough attorney in Demarest, N.J., from 1953 to 1975. He also served as judge of the Borough of Tenafly from 1953 to 1975. He was named in the 1984 edition of Who’s Who in American Law.

During World War II, Mr. Fasolo serves as 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force at Headquarters Squadron, Bolling Field, Washington, D.C.

In 1978, Mr. Fasolo retired to Carefree, Ariz., where he served as a key member of the Carefree Corporation Committee. He was a member of Desert Forest Golf Club and former member of the Knickerbocker Country Club Tenafly, N.J. He spent summers in Durango for the past five years.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Geraldine; son, Jeffrey of Durango; daughter, Jerilyn Dexter of Tenafly, N.J.; and two grandchildren.

Delores (Lorie) Ann Crawford Caldwell
June 20, 1998

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary for Delores (Lorie) Ann Crawford Caldwell, who died Saturday, June 20, 1998, from injuries sustained in a car accident on U.S. Highway 550 near Hermosa. She was 38.

Bishop Del A. Talley will officiate at services.

Mrs. Caldwell was born Sept. 20, 1959, in Bridgeport, Calif. She married Doug Caldwell on April 1, 1978, in Durango.

She is survived by her husband, Doug; two sons, Wesley Stephen Caldwell and John Logan Caldwell; parents, Wally and Carolyn Gitile, of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Christopher Crawford of Lewiston, Idaho, and Willy Gitile of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Tonya Alexander of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandmothers, Lucille Hughes of Escondido, Calif., and Lena R. Regan, of Pueblo, Colo.; two nephews; three nieces; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Augusta Nitzsche Watson
June 16, 1998

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Nucla Cemetery in Nucla, Colo., for Augusta Nitzsche Watson, who died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in Durango. She was 102.

Mrs. Watson was born June 17, 1895, in Chicago, Ill. In 1903, she moved to Nucla with her parents. She attended grade school in Nucla. When she was ready to attend high school, there was no high school in Nucla, so she traveled to Montrose to stay with a private family while attending school. She graduated in 1913.

Mrs. Watson then attended Gunnison Teacher’s College, and then Greeley College where she received a lifetime teacher’s certificate. She taught school at Third Park, Second Park, Nucla, Naturita and Norwood schools for 30 years.

In 1923, she married Don E. Watson in Nucla. They farmed together.

Mrs. Watson was involved with local activities in Nucla, including service on the school board for 12 years. She was active with the registration board and was the Farmer’s Union Insurance agent for 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985 and by infant daughter, Donna Jean. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Watson made her home with daughters in Dolores and Durango.

Survivors include her daughters, MyrPhil Turnbull of Dolores and Virginia Herrick of Durango; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Daisy May Atchison
June 14, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Daisy May Atchison, who died Sunday, June 14, 1998, in Durango. She was 94.

The Rev. John Richardson will officiate. Burial will be at Hilltop Cemetery in Pagosa Springs. Visitation will be today and Wednesday at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Atchison was born April 29, 1904, in New Mexico. She grew up on the family ranch eight miles north of Pagosa Springs and graduated from Pagosa Springs High School. She married and moved to California. She returned to Colorado, living the last 18 years in La Veta, Colo., with her husband, Ralph Atchison.

Mrs. Atchison was employed as a cook. She was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Atchison, three years ago.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Whitaker of Durango; sons, Ralph Etheridge of Bay City, Ore., and Russell Norton of Barnhart, Mo.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Beau James O’Neill
June 13, 1998

A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the family home, 224 S. Coyote Court., Hesperus, for Beau James O’Neill, who died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at his home in Durango. He was 21.

Maps are available at Hood Mortuary and Western Slope Insurance to attend services.

Mr. O’Neill was born June 12, 1977, in La Junta, Colo. He graduated from Las Animas High School in 1995 and attended Otero Junior College and Fort Lewis College.

Survivors include his mother, Leanna O’Neill; stepfather, Clint Jaworsky; father, James O’Neill; brother, Jared O’Neill; stepsisters, Stevi Jaworsky and Lauri Schultz; stepbrother, Chris Jaworsky; grandmother, Carol Sanburg and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sunshine Foundation (a foundation to grant wishes for the terminally ill), P.O. Box 225, Laughman, FL 33858. Those sending flowers may have them delivered to Hood Mortuary, 1261 East Third Ave., Durango.

The cause of death was not available at press time.

Cheri Lea Newbold
June 12, 1998

A celebration of life will be 7 p.m. today at St. Columba Catholic Church for Cheri Lea Newbold. A memorial service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Columba. Mrs. Newbold died Friday, June 12, 1998, as a result of contracting hantavirus. She was 38.

Mrs. Newbold was born April 11, 1960, in Waco, Texas, and had lived in Durango since 1970. She graduated from Durango High School in 1978 and from Fort Lewis College in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in business and secondary teaching certification.

Mrs. Newbold was a teacher until becoming a mother, and she recently began substituting in School District 9-R. She was a frequent volunteer for many community organizations and within the 9-R school system.

Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Keith Newbold; children, Darin, Kristi and Devin Newbold; parents, Marvin and Donna Giersch of Durango; brothers, Chris Giersch of Russell, Kan., and Curtis Giersch of Durango; sister, Amy Lantz of Durango; and grandparents, G.L. Giersch of Salina, Kan., and Isabelle Krannawitter of Hoxie, Kan.

Memorial donations may be made to the Giersch Family Scholarship Fund, c/o the Fort Lewis College Foundation Office, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301-9993, or to the Cheri Newbold Memorial Fund, c/o Burns National Bank, P.O. Drawer N, Durango, CO 81302-2950.

Daniel Karl Leithauser
June 8, 1998

Services were held June 13 in Afton, Wyo., for Daniel Karl Leithauser, who died Monday, June 8, 1998, in Kill Devils Hill, N.C. He was 34.

Mr. Leithauser was born March 5, 1964, in Durango. He attended grade school in Durango and Bayfield before moving to Afton, Wyo.

Survivors include his father, Vernon Leithauser of Vallecito Lake; mother, Phyllis Leithauser of Afton, Wyo.; sisters, Connie Philpot of Clinton, Mont., Verna Warren of Afton, Wyo., and Karen Leithauser of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Joe Leithauser of Fort Collins, Colo., Will Leithauser of Kill Devils Hill, N.C., and Greg Leithauser of Silverton.

The cause of death was not available at press time.

Catherine Hazel Ekstrom
June 6, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grand Junction, Colo., for Catherine Hazel Ekstrom, who died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 93.

Burial will be at Orchard Mesa Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. Rosary service at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction. Mrs. Ekstrom is survived by her son, Thomas Ekstrom of Durango; sister, Marguerite Keller of Pueblo, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Four Corners Health Care Center, 2911 Junction St., Durango, CO 81301.
