Elifar ‘Lee’ Jaramillo
May 18, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Elifar "Lee" Jaramillo, who died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 88.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Rosary service will be 6 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel.

Mr. Jaramillo was born April 4, 1910, in Gallina, N.M. He was an underground coal miner throughout his life, working mines in Colorado and New Mexico. He also worked at the Vanadium Corporation of America in Durango for a period of time.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernardita Jaramillo. Following her death, he then lived several years with his daughter, Lisa Jaramillo-Taulli and her husband, Joseph and their children, Joey, Stephanie and Estevan at their home in Durango.

Mr. Jaramillo is also survived by his sons, Jim Jaramillo and Max Jaramillo, both of Utah, and Phil Jaramillo of Alamosa, Colo.; daughters, Mayble Cordova, Susie Montoya and Elsie Nickerson, all of Utah; brothers, Pete Garcia and Max Garcia, both of Utah; sister, Elvidia of Monte Vista, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

John Morgan
May 17, 1998

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for John Morgan, who died Sunday, May 17, 1998, in Durango. He was 63.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will officiate. There was cremation.

Mr. Morgan was born Dec. 4, 1934, in Yatesborough, Pa. He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1957 from the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y. He received a bachelor of legal letters from the University of Buffalo Law School in 1960.

Survivors include his brother, William Morgan Jr. of Aztec, N.M.; sons, John Morgan of Westlake, Ohio, and David Morgan of Ohio; sisters, Priscilla Bowers of Westlake, La., Elizabeth Sauro of Grants Pass, Ore., Charlotte Whitmore of Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Peggy Jane Morgan of Corona, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, Central Group, P.O. Box 1074, Durango, CO 81302.

W. Thomas Mahoney
May 16, 1998

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 19 in Tucson, Ariz., for W. Thomas Mahoney, who died Saturday, May 16, 1998, in Tucson, Ariz. He was 80.

Mr. Mahoney was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Oakes, N.D. He moved to Durango in 1939.

Following military service in World War II, Mr. Mahoney worked for the Durango Division of the Colorado State Highway Department for 27 years as a construction engineer. He retired in 1980 and moved to Arizona.

Mr. Mahoney was a member of the St. Columba Parish and belonged to the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Mahoney; son, Tom Mahoney of Denver; daughters, Kathy McGavran of Denver, Maureen Petersen and Eileen Mahoney, both of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Colleen Greer of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters, Florence Petty and Dorothy Brack and six granddaughters.

William C. Alexander Jr.
May 16, 1998

Services will be 10 a.m. today at the Ignacio Community Church for William C. Alexander Jr., who died Saturday, May 16, 1998, in Durango. He was 72.

The Rev. Butch Waller will officiate. Burial will be at the Ignacio Cemetery.

Mr. Alexander was born July 19, 1925, in Celeste, Texas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Alexander was employed as a driller. He was a resident of Ignacio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lupe Jaques Alexander.

Survivors include his daughters, Debbie Herrera of Cortez and Viola Shahan of Elko, Nev.; son, Doug Jacques of Oakley, Calif.; brother, Robert Alexander of Aztec, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; one great-great-nephew and two great-great-nieces.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 375 East Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Louise Wommer Farrow
May 14, 1998

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Anchor Way Baptist Church in Steamboat Springs, Colo., for Louise Wommer Farrow, who died Thursday, May 14, 1998, in Steamboat Springs. She was 80.

Mrs. Farrow was born June 23, 1917, in Bayfield. She graduated from Bayfield High School in 1935 and received a teaching certificate from Adams State College. Her first teaching job was at Columbus School, north of Bayfield in the Pine River area.

She married Garland Neal "Bo" Farrow Oct. 3, 1941, in Aztec, N.M.

Mrs. Farrow continued to teach kindergarten when she moved to Steamboat Springs in 1955. She quit teaching to spend time with her family and the farm machinery business that her husband had started. Mrs. Farrow was very active in the bookkeeping and daily running of Farrow Repair Service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bo Farrow.

Survivors include her brother, Harold Wommer of Durango; sons, Gary Wommer and Dusty Wommer, both of Steamboat Springs; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Steamboat Springs Health Care Association to benefit the Extended Care Center.

Dale A. McCoy
May 14, 1998

Dale A. McCoy, a lifelong La Plata County resident, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, in Durango. He was 75.

He will be cremated with no services, by his request.

Mr. McCoy was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Bayfield. He served four years in the U.S. Marines in Okinawa during World War II.

Mr. McCoy worked as a farmer and rancher. He lived on the ranch where he was born on Texas Creek until the late 1960s. He then moved to Florida Mesa, where he was living at the time of his death.

Mr. McCoy is survived by four brothers – Harold, Orville, Rex and Ted McCoy – all of Durango; and a sister, Audrey Talmadge of Concorde, Calif.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Lucille Powell Pierce
May 12, 1998

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenmount Cemetery for Lucille Powell Pierce, who died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at her home in Red Bluff, Calif. She was 81.

Mrs. Pierce was born Dec. 13, 1916, in Durango. She was a former resident of Durango and Sunnyside, and had lived in Red Bluff, Calif., for the last 38 years.

Mrs. Pierce had been employed as a custodian at the Red Bluff Union High School and, upon retiring, she was rewarded for a lifetime membership to all girls sports. She was also employed as a housekeeper.

Mrs. Pierce enjoyed doing genealogy, gardening, collecting rocks and extensive traveling.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Melvin (Pat) Pierce; son, Ronald Pierce of Moab, Utah; daughters, Patty Brown of Magna, Utah, and Sherri Collins of Red Bluff, Calif.; brothers, Don Vigil of Arizona and Harold Vigil of Mexico; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be sent to a charity of choice.

Russell A. Hughes
May 11, 1998

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Russell A. Hughes, who died Monday, May 11, 1998, in Collingswood, N.J. He was 72.

The Rev. Rick Calhoun will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Hughes was born Dec. 2, 1925, in Glenwood, Iowa. He was a 1943 graduate of Glenwood High School in Glenwood, Iowa. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Hughes was associated for 38 years with the bookkeeping and tax firm E.K. Williams & Co., the last 17 years in Durango, and prior to that in Omaha, Neb.; Des Moines, Iowa; Kansas City, Mo.; and Las Vegas, Nev.

Mr. Hughes was a former member of Glenwood United Methodist Church in Iowa and the Optimists Club and Big Brothers of America in Kansas City, Mo.

Survivors include his brother, Carroll D. Hughes of Collingswood, N.J.; niece, Linda Shaughnessy of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and nephew, Timothy Hughes of Washington, D.C.
