Max Ortega Jr.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Daniel’s Catholic Church in Scottsdale, Ariz., for Max Ortega Jr. who died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at his home in Scottsdale after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 65.
Mr. Ortega was born in 1932 in Holbrook, Ariz. He grew up in Lupton, Ariz., where his father had a trading post along Route 66.
Mr. Ortega established Indian arts stores in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Silverton and Durango. He has traveled to Silverton each summer since 1974 when he opened a store there.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Ortega of Scottsdale; son, Max III; daughter Debra Ortega-Foster; brothers Armand, Gilbert and Dennis Ortega; sister Esther Andre; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.
Edith Williamson Brochu
March 4, 1998
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Fort Lewis College Chapel for Edith Williamson Brochu, who died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, in Durango. She was 68.
Mrs. Ginny Brown will officiate.
Mrs. Brochu was born Sept. 26, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. She served as the Red Cross director for a MASH Unit during the Korean War.
Mrs. Brochu graduated from Kansas University and earned her doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She was a professor at Fort Lewis College for 25 years.
Mrs. Brochu was a member of the Neo Delphian Sorority and PEO.
Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Blake A. Williamson of Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Dr. Betsy Chattaway of San Diego, Calif.; and a nephew and a niece.
Dale Dewain Claxton

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Montezuma-Cortez High School football field for Dale Dewain Claxton, a Cortez police officer who died Friday, May 29, 1998, in Cortez, Colo., after being shot in his patrol car. He was 45.
The Rev. Michael Thornton and Cortez Police Chief Roy Lane will officiate. Burial will be at the Cortez Cemetery.
Mr. Claxton was born March 15, 1953, in Omaha, Neb. He was raised in the Denver area and moved to Cortez in 1973. He graduated from the Delta-Montrose Tech Center with his peace officer certificate in 1995 and joined the Cortez Police Department that year.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Claxton of Cortez; father, Dairl Claxton of Marshfield, Mo.; mother, Agnes Claxton of Marshfield, Mo.; daughters, Judy Claxton Choate of Niagra, Mo., and Caitlin Claxton of Cortez; sons, Colton Claxton of Buffalo, Mo., and Corbin Claxton of Cortez; sisters, Bonnie Christianson and Judy Moore, both of Blair, Neb., and Sherri Zwally and Carolyn Valdez, both of Marshfield, Mo.; and brother, Doug Claxton Sr. of Phoenix, Ariz.

Richard C. Albo Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Richard C. Albo Sr., who died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in Durango. He was 58.
The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at the La Posta Cemetery. Rosary service will be 6 p.m. today at the church.
Mr. Albo was born Nov. 30, 1939, in Durango and was raised in the Durango area. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Albo worked for the City of Durango for 11 years as a heavy equipment operator.
Survivors include his wife, Neomie T. Mestas Albo of Durango; daughter, Grace Amalla of Bloomfield, N.M.; son, Richard C. Albo Jr. of Farmington, N.M.; brothers, Manuel Albo of Farmington, N.M., Abie Albo of Aurora, Colo., and Frankie Albo of Billings, Mont.; sister, Tommy Gardenier of Longmont, Colo.; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Holly J. Van Cleave

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Lang-Fendler Funeral Home Chapel in Arnold, Mo., for Holly J. Van Cleave, who died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, in Durango. She was 71.
Burial will be at the New St. John’s Cemetery
in Arnold, Mo.
Mrs. Van Cleave was born Dec. 22, 1926, in Granite City, Ill. She was a former resident of Arnold, Mo. She moved to Durango four years ago to be near her son, Milton and his wife, Rosie. Mrs. Van Cleave was a homemaker throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Earl Van Cleave.
Survivors include her son, Milton E. Van Cleave of Durango; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Richard Kent ‘Dick’ Grim

A memorial service will be at a later date for Richard Kent "Dick" Grim, who died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at his home in Durango after a brief illness. He was 69.
Mr. Grim was born July 24, 1928, in Clarkston, Wash. He was a logger throughout his life. Mr. Grim moved from Washington state to New Mexico in the early 1960s. He met and married Frances Barela on July 7, 1962, in Santa Fe, N.M. The couple moved to Durango that same year.
While in the area, Mr. Grim worked for Wideman and the San Juan lumber companies. He was once the Washington State Champion Boxer. He enjoyed reading, fishing, camping and sports.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Grim of Durango; sons, Mark Grim of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sam Grim of Maui, Hawaii; brothers, Robert Grim of Pomeroy, Wash., and David Grim of Pierce, Idaho; one granddaughter; and several nieces nephews and other relatives.
Eva Ruby Boyd

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Eva Ruby Boyd, who died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, in Durango. She was 84.
The Rev. Robert Kujath will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Boyd was born Dec. 1, 1913, in West Plains, Mo. She moved to Colorado in 1919, and the family settled in the Oxford and Ignacio area until they moved to Riverside, N.M. She married Willis E. Boyd in 1927 in Aztec, N.M. Mrs. Boyd was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978.
Survivors include her sons, Robert E. Boyd Sr. of Durango, Gilbert A. Boyd of Fruita, Colo., Willis E. Boyd of Denver, Colo.; daughters, Gladys Barnes of Ignacio, Joyce Hogue of Colgate, Okla., and Barbara Hapenstall of Cedaredge, Colo.; brother, Lloyd Palmer of Durango; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Josephine Rae Wommer

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greenmount Cemetery
for Josephine Rae Wommer, a longtime Durango resident who died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in Durango. She was 69.
Pastor Larry Osborne will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Mrs. Wommer was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Pershing, Colo. She grew up in Durango and graduated from Durango High School. She attended business college in Grand Junction before marrying Harold Wommer. The couple lived and worked throughout western Colorado including Grand Junction where they owned Western Colorado Realty. They retired to Durango 10 years ago.
Mrs. Wommer is survived by her husband, Harold Wommer of Durango; a sister, Anna Slavey of Aztec, N.M.; a brother, Louis Patscheck of Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara N. Kettle

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Barbara N. Kettle, who died Monday, May 18, 1998, in Albuquerque, N.M., following an extended illness. She was 65.
Bishop Jack Davison will officiate.
Mrs. Kettle was born April 1, 1933, in Durango. She married Edward L. Kettle Feb. 28, 1954, in Aztec, N.M.
Mrs. Kettle worked for Mountain Bell for a period of time. She was involved in scouting activities and made crafts. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Kettle of Durango; sons, Al Kettle of Oakley, Calif., Boyd Kettle of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Danny Kettle of Omaha, Neb.; mother, Oleta Slade of Durango; sisters, Kay Moffat, Joyce McMullen, Vicki Wood and Debbie Waters, all of Durango; half-sisters, Helen Gonzales of Montrose, Colo., and Tony Branson of Ferndale, Wash.; half-brother, Boyd Zufelt of Riverside, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
