Ethel Fern Stafford

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Durango Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Ethel Fern Stafford, who died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in Durango. She was 85.
Bishop Leonard Tanner will officiate.
Mrs. Stafford was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Cahone, Colo. She owned and operated the Lake Haven Resort at Vallecito Lake. She retired a number of years ago.
Mrs. Stafford was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Durango. She was an avid fisherwoman, wrote cook books, made handicrafts and was an artist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Nelson Stafford, Feb. 7, 1986.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie Wells of Durango; sisters, Faye Curling of Idaho, Erma Parker of Arizona and Angie Travis of Missouri; nephew, Jess Ellis of Durango; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Victoria Salvador

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Victoria Salvador, who died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, in Durango. She was 87.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate. Burial will be at the Ignacio Cemetery.
Mrs. Salvador was born June 25, 1910, in San Juan County, N.M. She was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Salvador was a homemaker and ranched with her family.
She was preceded in death by her adopted son, Isaac Salvador, in 1993.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Wilmer of Ignacio; daughter, Mary Gallegos of Ignacio; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mary Manuelita Abeyta

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Mary Manuelita Abeyta, who died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, in Durango. She was 84.
The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate. Burial will be at the Ignacio Cemetery. A Rosary service will be 7 p.m. today at the church.
Mrs. Abeyta was born May 1, 1913, in Edith, Colo. She was a longtime resident of Durango.
Mrs. Abeyta was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Porfirio Abeyta in 1988; by son, Edward Jerome Abeyta and by daughters, Maria Agapita Abeyta and Mary Crucita Abeyta.
Survivors include her son, James Abeyta of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Mary Ann Abeyta of Durango; brother, Silviano Martinez, Jr.; granddaughter, Sonya Abeyta and great-grandson, Michael Abeyta-Griego.
Chad W. Steinberg

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Chad W. Steinberg, who died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, in Durango. He was 18.
Mr. Steinberg was born Sept. 6, 1979, in Silver City, N.M. He moved to Durango in 1996 for his junior year of high school.
Mr. Steinberg was a senior at Durango High School. He was active with the speech and debate team at Durango High School and liked snowboarding.
Survivors include his father, Scott Steinberg of Durango; mother, Nancy Frederick Steinberg of Durango; sister, Jaime Steinberg of Tucson, Ariz.; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick of Joliet, Ill.; and grandmother, Rita Steinberg of Tucson, Ariz.
Memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302.
Police ruled the death a suicide.
Lawana M. Johnson

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Lewis College Chapel for Lawana M. Johnson, who died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, in Durango. She was 63.
The Rev. Carolyn Ringo will officiate.
Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 8, 1935, in Lubbock, Texas. She moved to Colorado in 1969 and to Durango from Norwood three years ago for health reasons.
She and her husband, Art, managed the Durango Mini Storage on U.S. Highway 160 west. Mrs. Johnson was also a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur Johnson of Durango; sons, Tony Whittle of Durango and Robert Whittle of Vencencio, Italy; daughters, Jackie Sale and Terry Armstrong, both of Omaha, Neb., and Debbie Deckert of Warner Robins, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, including Steve White of Durango, who was raised as a son in her home.
Nancy Diane Ream

Memorial services are pending for Nancy Diane Ream, who died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, in Durango. She was 39.
Ms. Ream was born Dec. 9, 1958, in Durango and was raised in the area. She attended school in Aztec, N.M.
Ms. Ream had been a resident of the Four Corners Health Care Center after suffering injuries in an auto accident several years ago.
Survivors include her father, Delton M. Ream of Arboles; mother, Mae A. Ledford Ream of Ignacio; daughters, Racheal Ream of Las Vegas, Nev., and Savonna Harrison of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Zach Ream of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, Lesley Mace of Los Osos, Calif., Harlan Mace of Ignacio and Elvis Ream of Arboles; sisters, Debra Pursley of Ignacio, Delta Cunningham of Arboles, Donna Dennington of Farmington, N.M., Beckey Neeley of Gallup, N.M., Linda Baronet of Washington and Doris Allan of Grand Junction, Colo.; and two grandchildren.
Kate S. Knight

Services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for Kate S. Knight, who died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, in Cortez. She was 89.
The Rev. Eddie Andary will officiate. Burial will be at Ouray Cemetery
in Ignacio.
Mrs. Knight was born Oct. 25, 1908, in Ignacio. She was a homemaker and a resident of Cortez.
She was preceded in death by a son, Willard E. Knight, and a daughter, Helen L. Knight.Survivors include her daughters, Katherine Ridley of Whiterock, Utah, Elsie Watts Martinez of Cortez, Gladys Knight Hammand of Towaoc, and Judy Knight-Frank of Towaoc; sons, Terry G. Knight of Towaoc, Ben Watts of Fort Duchesne, Utah, and Carl A. Knight of Towaoc; 37 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Gregory Lawrence Walker

Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Ignacio Cemetery
for Gregory Lawrence Walker, who died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, in Pico de Orizaba, Mexico, after falling from a mountain peak. He was 23.
The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at services.
Mr. Walker was born Feb. 23, 1974, in Denver.
He is survived by his parents, Glen and Barbara Walker of Ignacio; brother, Christopher Walker of Ignacio; grandmothers, Aline Walker of Delhi, La., and Thelman Smith of Commerce City, Colo.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to any of the following: Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Southwest Safehouse, Habitat for Humanity, Manna Soup Kitchen, or the Butch McClanahan Memorial Library in Ignacio.
Henry 'Hank' Reed

Henry "Hank" Reed died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Centura Health-Mercy Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. He was 71.
Mr. Reed was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Durango. He was a lifetime resident of La Plata County.
Mr. Reed was well known in the rodeo circuit for many years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Reed was a board member of the Ignacio Sanitation District at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Reed of Ignacio; brothers, Sam and Dan Reed; sisters, Erma Bean, Kitty Wilson, Janet Looman Reed and Dee Reed; and several nieces and nephews.
In respect to Mr. Reed's wishes, no formal service is planned.
