Mary Letha Woodall

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Lewis College Chapel for Mary Letha Woodall, a Durango resident, who died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 68. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary in Durango.

Ms. Woodall was born Oct. 14, 1933, in Zela, W. Va. She moved to Durango in 1980. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with family.

She is survived by five daughters, Linda Hypes of Drennon, W.Va., Jan Sibert of Kent, Ohio, Gloria Keeler of Albuquerque, N.M., Gail Stelmaszek of Pagosa Springs, and Sherry Rau of Durango; three sons, Bill Nutter of Summersville, W.Va., Dennis Nutter of Akron, Ohio, and Mark Nutter of Diamond, Ohio; a sister, Irene Nutter of Clay, W.Va.; 25 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Donald E. Howlett

A private memorial service will be held next summer for Donald E. Howlett, a longtime Durango resident, who died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Casa Grande, Ariz. He was 71. Cremation has occurred.

Cause of death was a burst appendix and complications from diabetes and emphysema.

Mr. Howlett was born Nov. 24, 1929, in St. Paul, Minn. He was a medic in the U. S. Navy for four years and served in the Korean War. He married Jean Howlett in 1955. The Howletts lived in Durango for 30 years. They moved to Casa Grande, Ariz., 10 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Howlett of Casa Grande, Ariz.; six children, Jim Howlett, Jennie Howlett-Pittser, Bob Howlett, Ed Howlett and Margret Copeland, all of Durango, and Dawn Cox of Casa Grande, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Justin Howlett, Brian Howlett, Christopher Howlett, Amber Howlett, Kassie Cox, Colt Cox and Stacy Myers, all of Durango, Heather Cox of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Michelle Mills of Mesa, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Alexis Myers of Durango.; two brothers, Dick Howlett of Minnesota and Jerry Howlett of Texas; and one sister, Peggy Doland of Minnesota.

Contributions may be made to the VFW Post 4031, 1550 Main Ave., Durango.

Elbert Bailey "Buddy" Harris

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Ignacio Community Church for Elbert Bailey "Buddy" Harris, who died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Ignacio. He was 60. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Revs. Curt Alderton and Randall Haynes will officiate.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Hood Mortuary. Cremation will be at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mr. Harris was born Aug. 3, 1941, in Milan, Tenn. He married Katheryn Kay Campbell on March 13, 1972, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was an avid horseman and devoted time to young people to build interest in horses and their care. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and their activities.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Harris of Ignacio; eight children, David Harris of Kankakee, Ill., Beth Campbell of New London, Iowa, Donald Harris of Edmond, Okla., Tammy Mansfield of Hendersonville, Tenn., Saletta Brooks of Sharon, Tenn., Jeffrey Harris of Syracuse, N.Y., and Clint Harris.; a sister, Lisa Paschall of Gleason, Tenn; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Robert L. Foreman

A private memorial service will be held for Robert L. Foreman, who died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, in Durango of natural causes. He was 81.

Mr. Foreman was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Greenville, Ohio. He married Bess Foreman on April 28, 1953, in Liberty, Ind.

He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II on a mine sweep ship.

He was a retired executive of General Motors Corp.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Foreman.

Mr Foreman is survived by his wife, Bess Foreman of Durango; two daughters, Shirley Mack of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and Bobbi Grattan of Durango; a son, Roger Foreman of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Faye Burt of Upland, Calif.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Nichols

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City for Myrtle Nichols, a former Durango resident, who died Oct. 13, 2001 in Canon City. She was 90. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday before the service. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, in Durango at Greenmount Cemetery.

Mrs. Nichols was born Dec. 29, 1910, in Cane Creek, Mo. She was married to Claude Nichols in June 1929. They moved to Durango in the 1960s. Mr. Nichols died in Durango in 1975. Mrs. Nichols worked at the Silver Spur for several years. She liked to collect knickknacks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; a son, Ronnie; and a daughter, Patsy.

She is survived by eight children, Arthur Nichols of Simi Valley, Calif., Bobbie Nichols of Westminster, Donald, Terry and Denis Nichols, Pamela Parsons and Connie Bell, all of Penrose, and Howard Nichols of Florence; 24 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Ilvah Ettie (Babe) Mosby

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield for Ilvah Ettie "Babe" Mosby, a longtime area resident, who died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Federal Way, Wash. She was 88. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cremation will be in Tacoma, Wash. Burial will be at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mrs. Mosby was born Dec. 14, 1912, in the Piedra River area. She married James Edward "Ed" Mosby on July 9, 1930, and moved to Texas. They lived in numerous places before making their home in Durango in 1945. Mrs. Mosby worked at Graden’s Mercantile for 11 years and for the La Plata County Clerk’s office for 23 years, retiring in March 1982. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Edward, and her husband, Ed. She is survived by a sister, Hattie Kingsley of Buckley, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.

Lezlee Ann Swaford

A memorial service will be held for family and close friends at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fort Lewis College Chapel for Lezlee Ann Swaford, a Durango resident, who died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Durango. She was 45. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mrs. Swaford was born Aug. 11, 1956, in Denver. She lived in Durango off and on for several years and attended nursing school here. Her hobbies included painting, cooking, needlework, gardening and singing. She recently took up chicken farming.

She is survived by her father and mother, Howard L. and Shirley Morris, of Durango; a son, Nathan Morris, of Durango; five daughters, Jennifer Riffle and Heather Goodwin, both of Durango, Amanda Morris of Clifton, Colo., Amber Klein of Pennsburg, Pa., and Ashlee Swaford of Everett, Wash.; two sisters, Susan Hicks and Linda Morris, both of Durango; three brothers, David Morris of Cañon City, Colo., and Alan Morris and Glen Morris, both of Durango; eight grandchildren, Charles Barr of Pagosa Springs, Sidney Morris, Brianna Riffle, Elijah Riffle, Savannah Morris and Vanessa Goodwin, all of Durango, and Summer Morris and Ricky Morris, both of Clifton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard A. (Dick) Davis

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Hood Mortuary in Durango for Richard A. "Dick" Davis, a lifelong area resident and rancher, who died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 77.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at the service. Burial will be at Florida Cemetery on County Road 225.

Mr. Davis was born May 4, 1924, in Durango. He married Dorothy Ismay on May 7, 1958, in Aztec.

He graduated from Durango High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was stationed in San Francisco and served on the USS Uvalde during the war. Mr. Davis was a rancher and rural postman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

He is survived by his children, Laura L. Baker, Anna M. Kaufman, Richard Paul Davis and Douglas J. Davis, all of Durango; two brothers, Robert Davis and George Davis, both of Durango; two sisters, Elizabeth Shoemaker of Sacramento, Calif., and Mary Helen Davis of Medford, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

Stephen "Batt" Giambattista

Stephen "Batt" Giambattista, a construction worker who loved to ski, died Tuesday, September 25, from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, at Mercy Medical Center. He was 50.

Giambattista made numerous friends in La Plata County through his job and because of his charismatic personality, said his wife, Paulette W. Giambattista.

"He never met a stranger, and people loved that," Paulette said. "He was the type of person who was never grumpy or cranky even when he wasn’t feeling good. He loved everybody."

Although he wasn’t formally diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s, a rare disease that weakens muscles and is also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, until April 2001, Mr. Giambattista began noticing symptoms in 1999. In December 2000, about 400 people gathered to pay tribute to Mr. Giambattista at the Durango Elks Club. A group called "Friends of Batt" raised about $55,000 to pay for experimental treatment for his as-then unnamed illness in the Dominican Republic using stem cells, Mrs. Giambattista said.

The memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Rotary Park in Durango.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette; daughter, Meredith; mother, Therese; three sisters, Aleta Boulin of New Castle, Maine, Marie Freeman of Rumford, Maine, and Linda Gallant of Byron, Maine; two brothers, John Giambattista and David Giambattista, both of Norwich, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen Marie Hocker

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cedaredge for Helen Marie Hocker, a former area resident, who died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, of natural causes. She was 70.

Bishop Steve Palmer will officiate at services.

Mrs. Hocker was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Cedaredge, Colo. She married Neil Hocker on June 8, 1952, in Cedaredge. She moved to Farmington in 1971, Redmesa in 1976 and then back to Cedaredge in 1988. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, the outdoors and spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her husband, Neil Hocker of Cedaredge; three sons, Jeff Hocker of Redmesa, Greg Hocker of Cortez and Bruce Hocker of Delta; four daughters, Debra Richardson of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Teri Gustafson of Farmington, Lori Carson of McGill, Nev., and Beth Johnson of Cortez; three sisters, Rosamond Pagone of Hotchkiss, Colo., Marion Henkle of Paonia, Colo., and Betty Alhizer of California; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
