Gary D. VanderMeer

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home Chapel in San Antonio, Texas, for Gary D. VanderMeer, a former Durango resident, who died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, of cancer. He was 59.

Interment will follow the funeral in Mission Burial Park North in San Antonio.

Mr. VanderMeer was born Dec. 28, 1941, in Kalamazoo, Mich. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was employed as a meat cutter and manager with the H.E.B. and Albertsons grocery store chains in San Antonio for more than 25 years.

Dean D. Peterson

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 312 N. Orchard Ave. in Farmington for Dean D. Peterson, a lifelong area resident, who died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, in Farmington. He was 49.

The Rev. Carl Brenner will officiate.

Mr. Peterson was born Aug. 28, 1952, in Durango. He grew up in Pagosa Springs, where he was an avid hunter, fisherman and horseman and was involved in 4-H. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a boatswain’s mate. He was employed most recently as a professional truck driver for Four Corners Pre-Cast Inc. He also drove trucks for Giant, Permian and Havens trucking companies.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Farmington. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie Peterson of Farmington; two daughters, Brandy Peterson serving in the U.S. Navy in Crete and Amanda Howell of Farmington; father Paul Peterson of Bloomfield; and a brother, Dale Peterson of Bloomfield.

Lottie Walker Reddert

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Mancos Methodist Church for Lottie Walker Reddert, a longtime Mancos Valley resident, who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001. She was 97.

Mrs. Reddert was born Oct. 4, 1904, in Pagosa Springs. She married Fred "Doc" Reddert in 1926 in Denver.

Mrs. Reddert attended the Hesperus campus of Fort Lewis College, where she graduated from the Rural Teachers’ Training Program. She taught at the Arboles and Stollsteimer elementary schools.

The couple moved to Fort Collins, where they lived until Mr. Reddert graduated from veterinary school in 1928.

The couple moved in 1931 to Santa Cruz, Calif., where Mrs. Reddert taught school, served on the school board and as YMCA president. She also assisted her husband with his veterinary clinic.

In 1954, the couple moved to a ranch in Mancos, where Mrs. Reddert was active in the Methodist Church, PEO and the Cowbelles.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979.

She is survived by two daughters, Naomi Reddert of Carmel, Calif., and Norma Brown of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a brother, James Walker of Arboles; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mancos Methodist Church, to the Fred and Lottie Reddert Scholarship Fund at the San Juan Basin Technical School or to the educational program of the donor’s choice. The family requests memorial donations be made in lieu of flowers.

Ilene May White

A wake service will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church, 3170 East Fourth Ave., for Ilene May White, a Durango resident, who died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, in Durango of natural causes. She was 64.

Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. White was born March 29, 1937. She married Hugh Keith White. She always tried to help friends and family, and loved animals.

She is survived by a daughter, Jewell Gibson of Durango.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2164, Durango, CO 81302.

Marlene M. McLaughlin

A memorial mass will be at 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 8, 2001, at St. Columba Church in Durango for Marlene M. McLaughlin, who died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Palo Alto, Calif. She was 69. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. McLaughlin was born Jan. 5, 1932, in Oak Park, Ill. She graduated from Lake Forest College in Illinois. She taught first grade for four years in Oak Park before marrying William T. McLaughlin. Together they raised five children in Saratoga, Calif. After Dr. McLaughlin’s retirement, the couple moved to Durango.

Mrs. McLaughlin is survived by her husband, Dr. William T. McLaughlin; three daughters, Carrie Akoun of Andresy, France; Kathleen Weddle of New York, N.Y., and Patty Allen of Saratoga, Calif.; two sons, John McLaughlin of Torrance, Calif., and David McLaughlin of Menlo Park, Calif.; and her brother, Allen Moreno of Elmwood Park, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Chapter CS of the Philanthropic Education Organization c/o Suzanne Friend, 129 Starwood Trail, Durango, CO 81301-8506.

Paul H. Deacon

A memorial service will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his home for Paul H. Deacon, who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at home of natural causes. He was 86.

Mr. Deacon was born in 1914 in Glenwood, Iowa. He moved to Monte Vista at the age of 13. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from The Colorado College in 1938 and later received his master’s in history at the University of Southern California in 1947. He coached college football in Nebraska and Utah before joining the Navy.

He served in World War II and the Korean War as a lieutenant commander. Mr. Deacon taught history at Kearny High School in San Diego, Calif., for 27 years before retiring in 1975. He and his wife then moved to Durango. He loved fly fishing on Colorado rivers. He also enjoyed tennis, golf and working on two homes in Durango.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Burnham Deacon; a stepson, Billy Joe Deacon of California; and Nancy’s two children, Lyn Hogan of San Francisco, and Michael Hogan of Auckland, New Zealand.

Joseph M. Lachowicz

A memorial service was held Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, for Joseph Michael Lachowicz, who died Oct. 18, 2001, from pancreatic cancer. He was 58.

Mr. Lachowicz was born Oct. 12, 1943, in the Bronx, N.Y. He graduated from Tufts University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Kansas.

He lived in Durango in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He worked for the Intermountain Center for Human Development and he operated a greenhouse and nursery here.

Mr. Lachowicz is survived by his wife, Nonie Gaines; two children, Tanya and Nik Lachowicz; two stepsons, Sean and Wylie Herman; a stepdaughter, Charlotte Parris; and a sister, Carole Lachowicz.

Contributions may be made to the Intermountain Center for Human Development.

James Howe

A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Paradise, Calif., for James B. Howe, a longtime Bayfield resident, who died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at his home in Paradise of natural causes. He was 77.

Mr. Howe was born June 4, 1924, in Agua Fria, N.M. He married Lois Meeks Dec. 27, 1973, in Reno, Nev.

He served in the military from 1942 to 1944 and was a disabled veteran. He worked for the Peabody Coal Co. doing drilling and shooting and was a foreman for 27 years. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a lifelong miner of gold, uranium and coal. He loved fishing, hunting and reloading ammunition.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Paradise, Calif.; two sons, Richard Howe of Paradise, and Leslie Howe of Illinois; a daughter, Annette Arnold of Reno, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ethan Allen Wright

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Broomfield Presbyterian Church at 350 Main St., in Broomfield, Colo., for Ethan Allen Wright, a longtime former resident of Durango and Ignacio, who died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at the Boulder Manor Care Center in Boulder. He was 96.

The Rev. Ed Black will officiate.

There was cremation. Burial of remains will be at the Ignacio cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Wright was born Dec. 4, 1904, in Cass County, Mich. He married Muriel Irene Miller on June 12, 1927, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Mr. Wright owned the Electric Service and Supply business in Durango for 45 years. He was a member of the Broomfield Presbyterian Church, Four Corners Rock Club and The Rock Club in New Mexico and in Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

He is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Axelson of Broomfield, Colo., and Barbara Coe of Yerevan, Armenia; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Katherine (Kay) Watkins

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church at 4301 NE Vivian Road, Kansas City, Mo., for Mary Katherine "Kay" Watkins, a former longtime Durango resident, who died Oct. 20, 2001, in Gladstone, Mo. She was 83.

Mrs. Watkins was born March 12, 1918, in Carthage, Mo. She graduated from Joplin Senior High School. She married David R. Watkins on Feb. 23, 1940, in Joplin, Mo.

In 1950, the couple moved to Durango, where Mrs. Watkins worked at Graden’s Department Store. She was active in the Republican Party, Eastern Star, the La Plata Players, the Sweet Adelines and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing tennis and golf.

She is survived by her husband, David R. Watkins, of Gladstone, Mo.; a son, David D. Watkins of Lake Weatherby, Mo.; a daughter, Kathy Bailey of Kansas City, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
