Georgia M. Long

Georgia M. Long, a Durango resident, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. She was 74. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Ms. Long was born Feb. 2, 1927, in Peoria, Ill. She moved to this area in 1997 to be with her daughter.

Ms. Long enjoyed animals and springtime and therefore, a memorial service for friends and family will be held at an undetermined time next spring in the mountains.

Ms. Long is survived by a daughter, Gale Frances Long of Durango; a son, Danny Ralph Long of Land O’ Lakes, Fla.; a sister, Doris Dikeman of Peoria, Ill.; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave.

Sophia V. Perez French

Services were held Aug. 10, 2001. at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, in Ogden, Utah, for Sophia V. Perez French, a Durango native, who died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Heritage Park Care Center, in Roy, Utah. She was 92.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. French was born Dec. 10, 1909, in Durango. She married Ross Perez, and they had 11 children. He preceded her in death and she married Bob French in 1971 in Cortez. Mrs. French spent most of her life in Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ross Perez and Bob French; and four sons, Ben, Richard, Fidel and Jimmie Perez.

She is survived by four sons, Gilbert Perez of New Mexico, John Perez of Colorado, Vincent Perez of California, Paul Perez of Arizona; two daughters Margaret Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nev., and Stella Quintana of West Valley, Utah; a brother, Tom Vigil of New Mexico; 40 grandchildren; and 73 great children.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Libo

Elizabeth Libo died Sept. 11, 2001 in Sante Fe, N.M. She was 76. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Ms. Libo was born February 28, 1925, in Burbank, Calif. She loved her cat, Jessie.

She is survived by her friend and partner of many years, Mary Brady; her children; Gina Libo of Las Cruces, N.M., and Victor Libo of Datil, N.M., Felicia Libo of Durango; her grandchildren, Maggie, Hannah and Sam Feil of Las Cruces, and Emily and Thomas Wilbert of Durango; her sister, Kaki Thompson of Montrose; and her nieces and their families.

Contributions may be made to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter.

Betty King

Mass and internment were held at St. Columba Catholic Church in Johnstown, Pa., for Betty King, who died Sept. 5, 2001 at Winber, Pa. Hospice. She was 82. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. King is survived by three children, Claudia Pew of Bayfield, Denise King Stovall of Hesperus and Michael King of State College, Pa.; and four grandchildren, George T. Pew, III, of Princeton, N.J., Travis Stovall, of Hesperus, and Richard and Chelsea King of State College, Pa.

Contributions may be made to St. Columba Church of Durango or Hospice at Mercy.

David Robert Zenke

A memorial service will be held at noon today at 49393 U.S. Highway 160 for David Robert Zenke, of Bayfield, who died Sept. 9, 2001, in Creede in a motorcycle accident. He was 48.

Family and friends will officiate at the service.

Mr. Zenke was born Oct. 30, 1952, in New Haven, Conn. He worked for many years for Williams Field Service and was a private contractor at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Fern Zenke of Bayfield; a son, A.J. Zenke of Bayfield; his father, Bob Zenke of Cape Cod, Mass.; three brothers, Michael Zenke, Scott Zenke and Billy Zenke of New Haven, Conn.; a sister, Elizabeth Ball of New Haven, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna Shubert Sagan

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Valley Vista United Methodist Church in Denver for Donna Shubert Sagan, who died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001. She was 39. There will be cremation. The cause of death was not known.

Mrs. Sagan was born Nov. 26, 1961, in Kerrville, Texas. She married Nicholas Sagan, July 23, 1994, in Morrison, Colo.

Mrs. Sagan graduated from Durango High School in 1980. She had a master’s degree from Colorado State University. She was a choir teacher at Longmont High School. She enjoyed gardening, reading, writing and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Nicholas Sagan of Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Jillian Sagan of Littleton, Colo.; her mother and father, L. Jean and Carrell Shubert of Durango; three brothers, Randy Shubert of Denver, Ron Shubert of Durango and Brandon Shubert of Cortez; and a grandmother, Nerine Zumwalt of Kerrville, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jillian Allegra Sagan Education Fund, Wells Fargo Bank, 200 W. College Dr., Durango, Attention Julie Crumbaugh.

Philip Keith Mason

A memorial service and burial was held Sept. 9 in Lake City, Colo., for Keith Mason, a Durango native, who died Sept. 3, 2001, as the result of a haying accident near Gunnison, Colo. He was 60.

Mr. Mason was born June 2, 1941, in Durango. He was married to Edna Ludwig on Oct. 5, 1984, in Delta, Utah.

Mr. Mason graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management.

He worked for the Colorado Division of Wildlife for 38 years.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons, Michael Mason of Kansas and Patrick Mason of Castle Rock, Colo.; two brothers, Jerry Mason of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Russell Mason of Bailey, Colo.; two sisters, Charlene Phillips of Durango and Jean Baer of Cortez; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Association Scholarship Fund, 6060 Broadway, Denver, CO 80216.

Cristin Linelle Luzar

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Central Assembly of God Church in Great Falls, Mont., for Cristin Linelle Luzar, a former Durango resident who died Sept. 9, 2001, of breast cancer. She was 29.

There was cremation.

Mrs. Luzar was born March 21, 1972, in Fort Collins, Colo. She married Frank E. Luzar in September 1995 in Durango.

Mrs. Luzar graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College. She worked at City Market in Durango before moving to Montana.

She was a member of 4-H for 10 years and enjoyed working with horses. Her hobbies included fishing and camping. Mrs. Luzar was actively involved in her church and went to Russia in 1997 to do missionary work. She was preparing to enter full-time ministry with her husband, Frank.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, of Geraldine, Mont.; her father, Jim Cole of Lincoln, Kan.; her mother, Ronda Wade of Durango; a brother, Jason Cole of Durango; and four grandparents, Jim and Ruth Cole of Durango, and Earl and Wilma Woodhouse of Hamilton, Mont.

Daniel Wade Cordell

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kline Cemetery for Daniel Wade Cordell, a lifelong area resident, who died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, in a car accident near Red Mesa. He was 33.

Bishop Trent Taylor will officiate at the service. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mr. Cordell was born Sept. 8, 1967, in Durango. He graduated from Durango High School in 1986. He worked for City Market for 10 years at both locations before becoming employed with the city of Durango.

He enjoyed playing the piano, fishing, camping and cars.

He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Janet Cordell of Hesperus; brothers, Troy Dean Cordell of Hesperus and Jeff Cordell of Salt Lake City; nieces, Tyler and Camren Cordell of Hesperus; a grandmother, Patti Cordell of Flora Vista; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to Durango Thespian Troupe No. 1096, Durango High School, 2390 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Sarah E. McLendon

Services will be held Tuesday at the Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Morton, Texas, for Sarah Elizabeth McLendon, who died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Four Corners HealthCare Center. She was 86.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. McLendon was born May 16, 1915, in Crosbyton, Texas. She married Wesley B. McLendon Oct. 16, 1932, in Lingo, N.M.

The couple farmed in Texas before moving to Southern California, where Mrs. McLendon worked as a dietitian. She moved to Bayfield in 1993.

She was a member of Rock Missionary Baptist Church, former president of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and a life member of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley; sons, Wesley E. and Percy McLendon; and a daughter, Lois Meador.

She is survived by a son, David McLendon of Chino, Calif.; a daughter, Tempy Black of Bayfield; a brother, Junior Mills of Muleshoe, Texas; a sister, Lula Stone of Roswell, N.M.; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
