Jack M. Rentfrow

Funeral services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Masonic Lodge, 421 Turner Drive, for Jack M. Rentfrow, who died Sept. 8, 2001, in Pueblo. He was 90.

A reception will follow the services.

Mr. Rentfrow was born June 10, 1911, in Pueblo. He was employed by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in Pueblo and Durango, and he retired as trainmaster-roadmaster in 1976.

Mr. Rentfrow was active in the Masonic Fraternity, having served as master of Durango Lodge No. 46 and San Juan Lodge No. 33 in Silverton. He enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two children, David Rentfrow of Pueblo and Ruth Ann Sterle of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William (Bill) Holgate

A private family funeral was held at the Rose Hills Chapel in Whittier, Calif. for William "Bill" Holgate, a former Durango resident, who died at home in Stanton, Calif., on Sept. 20, 2001. He was 87.

Burial will be at Rose Hills Cemetery.

Mr. Holgate was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Kline. He lived in the Durango area until 1940 when he moved to California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nola.

He is survived by one son, William Holgate, Jr., two granddaughters, and a great grandson, all of California; one sister, Leila Davies of Roswell, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.

Edna L. McKinney

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church of Christ at 300 Ruins Road in Aztec for Edna L. McKinney, a former Bayfield resident, who died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at her home in Aztec. She was 86. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Gerald Stockstill will officiate. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Bayfield Cemetery in Bayfield. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Mrs. McKinney was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Throckmorton County, Texas. She enjoyed drawing, painting, cooking and sewing. She was a resident of Bayfield until moving to Aztec in 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee McKinney.

She is survived by her son, John C. McKinney of Aztec; two daughters, Nancy Lee Upton of Freeport, Ill., and Mary Ann Wright of Seminole, Texas; three brothers, Frank London, T.L. London and Berry London, all of Carlsbad, N.M.; a sister, Marie Bond of Malaga, N.M.; five grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portalis, N.M.

Dorothy F. Tanner

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango, for Dorothy F. Tanner, a longtime Durango resident, who died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, in Durango of natural causes. She was 87.

The Rev. Myron Darmour will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Tanner was born Jan. 3, 1914 in Pendleton, N.M. She married James (Jim) Tanner on Feb. 17, 1945, in New Orleans. She graduated from Durango High School in 1931.

Mrs. Tanner worked in the War Department during World War II as a secretary to a colonel at Camp Plache in Louisiana. She later worked in military records at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey before moving back to Durango. She was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation and Farmers Home Administration in Durango for 30 years, and she was presented an award for outstanding performance upon retirement.

Mrs. Tanner contributed to the development of the Durango/La Plata Senior Center and volunteered there. She enjoyed music, dancing, fishing and cards.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Tanner of Durango; two sisters, Aileen Maxwell of Cortez and Gladys McBee of Durango; two cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Durango/La Plata Senior Center, 2429 Main Ave., or Hospice of Mercy, 3801 Main Ave., both in Durango, CO 81301.

Robert Glover ‘Bob’ Sherwood

Robert Glover "Bob" Sherwood died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at his home in Cortez. He was 72. The cause us of death was not disclosed.

No services are planned.

Mr. Sherwood was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Fairfield, Conn.

Mr. Sherwood worked in the banking industry and was employed by Dove Creek State Bank and Valley National Bank. He loved to ski, hunt ducks and play golf.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minna Bohlman Sherwood.

He is survived by his children; Robert Scott Sherwood and William Glover Sherwood II of Durango, and Mari Lyn Lichliter of Cortez; two grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.

Margaret F. "Crucita" Moser

A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs for Margaret F. "Crucita" Moser, who died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. She was 85. The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. John Bowe will officiate. A rosary service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Ms. Moser was born April 12, 1916, in Nutritas, Colo. She was a lifelong resident of the Pagosa Springs area, where she worked and raised her family. Before recently moving to Durango, she lived a short time at Casa de los Arcos senior home in Pagosa Springs, where she had many friends. She enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

She is survived by her daughter, Pauline Lopez of Arboles; a son, Dennis Lopez of Pagosa Springs; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph B. Esser Mason

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington, for Joseph B. Esser Mason, who died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001. He was 76. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Farmington.

Mr. Mason was born May 18, 1925, in Canon City. His father died when Mr. Mason was 3 years old and his mother later married Dr. Charles Mason of Durango.

Mr. Mason married Joan Nisbeth, of Durango, in Gallup, N.M. The couple lived in Durango most of his life. They were married 57 years.

Mr. Mason built a log cabin by hand at Cascade Creek and enjoyed fishing, playing duplicate bridge and baking bread. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Farmington. He was also a life member of the Durango Elks Club.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, Gary Mason of Durango and Charles Mason of Colorado Springs; three daughters, Gretchen Hirni of Tempe, Ariz., Jennifer Alley of Pagosa Springs, and Marguerite Mason of Red Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Mrs. Jim (Macey) O’Neill of Farmington; and a brother, Eugene Mason of Boulder City, Nev.

Contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Hazel M. Peden

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Christian Church in Farmington, N.M., for Hazel M. Peden, who died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001. She was 90. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Peden was born Sept. 8, 1911, in Little Rock, Ark. She married Garald Peden on Dec. 26, 1933. She was active in many clubs and organizations, such as Busy Bees and Cowbells. Mrs. Peden was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Garald Peden.

She is survived by two sons, Dewey Peden of Durango, and John Peden of Cheyenne, Wyo.; three daughters, Mary Lou Newnum and Hazel May Boggs of Farmington, and Joan White of Montrose; a brother, Dewey Ray of Kermit, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to a charity of choice.

Eugene Floyd Beaver

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Greenmount Cemetery for Eugene Floyd Beaver, a lifelong area resident, who died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, in Durango. He was 57. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Chaplain Myron Darmour will be officiating at the service. Visitation will be held from noon until 8:30 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Beaver was born Feb. 16, 1944, in Durango. He married Patty Ann Beaver in 1964. He graduated from Bayfield High School and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a welder in town for many years.

Mr. Beaver is survived by his wife, Patty Ann Beaver, of Durango; two sons, Terry G. Beaver and Gary A Beaver, both of Durango; a brother, Leroy Beaver of Bayfield; two sisters, Beverly E. Ladman of Bayfield, and Diane Benton of Pahrump, Nev.; and a granddaughter, Crystal Rena Beaver of Durango.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3801 N. Main Ave., or to the American Red Cross to benefit disaster relief.
