James S. (Jimmy) Chacon

A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for James "Jimmy" Chacon, a longtime Durango resident, who died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate at services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery following the service. No rosary service is planned.

Mr. Chacon was born May 9, 1918, in Walsenburg, Colo.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for Montgomery Ward for more than 40 years. He was also a longtime member of the Sacred Heart parish.

Mr. Chacon is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca, and a daughter, Patricia.

He is survived by his children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a brother, Max Chacon, of Durango.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mr. Chacon’s name to the Four Corners Health Care Center – Alzheimer’s Care Unit, 2911 Junction St., Durango, CO 81301.

Janice Louise (Janie) Porter

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Ertel Memorial Chapel for Janice Louise "Janie" Porter, a lifelong Cortez resident, who died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 52.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Hunt Zumwalt and Shelby Smith will officiate at services. Burial will follow at the Battle Rock Cemetery.

Ms. Porter was born May 3, 1949, in Cortez.

|She was a health-care professional who worked as an emergency room clerk. She enjoyed music and reading

She is survived by her mother, Betty E. Porter, of Cortez; three brothers, James Porter of McElmo Canyon, Charlie "Toad" Porter Jr. of Cortez, and Nathan K. Porter of Lewis; and a sister, Elaine Hart of Los Lunas, N.M.

Memorial contributions may be made in Ms. Porter’s name to Citizens State Bank.

Elizabeth (Betty) Feazel

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sept. 8, at the At Last! Ranch in Pagosa Springs for Elizabeth "Betty" Feazel, a longtime area resident, who died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in her home in Pagosa Springs of natural causes. She was 85.

Mrs. Feazel was born July 25, 1916, in Dayton, Ohio, the only child of Lucy and Earl Turner. Her parents bought the At Last! Ranch, west of Wolf Creek Pass near Pagosa Springs, in 1922. The family spent its summers at the ranch.

Mrs. Feazel graduated from Wellesley College in Boston with a degree in philosophy and married Earnest Feazel on June 6, 1944, at the At Last! Ranch.

She moved to the ranch full-time in 1973 from the family farm in Missouri.

Mrs. Feazel was an active environmentalist and one of the founding members of the Southwest Land Alliance land trust. She also played a role in establishing the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts in 1990.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest.

She is survived by three sons, Turner Feazel of Newburgh, Ind., and John Hanson Feazel and David P. Feazel, both of Pagosa Springs; a daughter, Lucy Bazel of Hesperus; grandchildren Jennifer and Justin Feazel of Newburgh, Ind., Leah Feazel of Durango, Sialia Bazel of Hesperus, and Matt and Danny McGinnis of Pagosa Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Lucy Turner Book Endowment, P.O. Box 849, Pagosa Springs, CO, 81147.

Donald Lyle Dennison

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Farmington Elks Lodge No. 1747, 301 N. Municipal Drive, for Donald Lyle Dennison, who died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at his home in Farmington of natural causes. He was 68.

Mr. Dennison was born Feb. 24, 1933, in Breen. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and he was an honorary life member and past exalted ruler of the Farmington Elks Lodge. Mr. Dennison enjoyed horses.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Dennison of Farmington; a son, Donald Scott Dennison of Aztec; three daughters, Darla Martinez of Aztec, Rhonda Garcia of Phoenix, and Shelly Ordonez of Farmington; two brothers, Leo Dennison of Adrian, Mo., and Keith Dennison of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to C&B Trust, in care of Farmington Elks Lodge No. 1747, 301 N. Municipal Drive, or to the San Juan Regional Cancer Center, 800 W. Maple St., both in Farmington, NM 87499.

Timothy Dale (Tim) Ritchie

A memorial service will be held Wednesday in Colorado Springs at Broadmoor Community Church for Timothy Dale (Tim) Ritchie, who died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, in Ignacio. He was 44. The cause of death was not disclosed. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mr. Ritchie was born Nov. 29, 1956, in Colorado Springs. He lived in Durango for the past three years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Mr. Ritchie had been working on the upgrade of the visitor’s center at Navajo Lake.

He is survived by his parents, William and Betty Ritchie of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; two brothers, David Ritchie of Bastrop, Texas, and Fredrick Ritchie of Colorado Springs; a sister, Jeanne Orr of Billings, Mont.; two children, Stephen and Kristina Ritchie of Colorado Springs; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Beryl Frost Scarber

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the Snowflake Cemetery in Arizona for Beryl Frost Scarber, a former Ignacio resident, who died Aug. 20, 2001, at Heritage Healthcare Center in Globe, Ariz. She was 85. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Scarber was born Aug. 1, 1914, at Porter Mountain, near Show Low, Ariz. She moved throughout the United States with her husband, John Scarber, for his job assignments in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They retired in Snowflake and Apache Junction, Ariz.

Mrs. Scarber was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was preceded in death by John, her husband of 55 years, and oldest son, Eugene.

She is survived by five children, Bob Scarber of Seattle, Louise Flanagan of Missoula, Mont., Janet Bearden of Washington, D.C., Linda Crooks of Vancouver, Wash., and Larry Scarber of Globe, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Arizona Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 1028 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 86006-2622.

Mary E. White

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at San Juan Mortuary in Blanding, Utah, for Mary E. White, who died Aug. 19, 2001, at her home in Blanding, Utah, of natural causes related to heart disease.

She was 84.

Mrs. White was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Palisade, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. White.

She is survived by a son, Stanley White of Blanding, Utah; a daughter, Norma Andrea Peck of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Silviano Ronmaldo Archuleta Jr.

A graveside service will be held Friday at Canyon Bonito Family Cemetery in Middle Mesa, N.M., for Silviano Ronmaldo Archuleta Jr., a lifetime area resident, who died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 56.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Attendants should meet at 10 a.m. at the St. Juan Catholic Church in Tiffany, where they will proceed to the place of burial.

The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at the service. Mr. Archuleta made a request for casual dress and no flowers.

Mr. Archuleta was born Feb. 19, 1945, in the Santa Rita area of Durango. He married Bernice Edwards on June 25, 1976, in Aztec.

Mr. Archuleta was a cattle rancher. He enjoyed working, hunting and riding horses.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice of Bloomfield; sons, Silviano Archuleta III of Arboles, Samuel Dallas Archuleta of Durango, Ruben Archuleta of Bloomfield, Quentin Archuleta of Bloomfield and Blas Salazar of Ignacio; daughters, Rosanna Archuleta of Ignacio and Elizabeth Gurule of Arboles; brothers, Victor Archuleta of Allison, Fred Archuleta of Ignacio, Andy Archuleta of Ignacio and Joe S. Archuleta of Tiffany; sisters, Bernice Martinez of Durango, Duby Gallegos of Tiffany, Amelia Archuleta of Montrose and Ursula Davies of Allison; and a granddaughter, Savanah Gurule.

Cecil Wesley Mars

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Pine Valley Church of the Four Square Gospel for Cecil Wesley Mars, who died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, in Farmington. He was 53.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Burial will be at Pine River Cemetery.

Mr. Mars was born Sept. 15, 1947, in Portales, N.M. He married Karen May Mars on Aug. 3, 1968, in Denver.

Mr. Mars worked for Williams Field Services for 30 years before retiring. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Mars of Bayfield; a son, Shaun Mars of Bayfield; three daughters, Jessica Mars of Bayfield, Lou Ann Taylor of Houston and Kelly Gardner of Phoenix; two brothers, Jim Mars of Bayfield and Bill Mars of Aztec; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
