Albert E. Chandler

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Albert E. Chandler, who died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Durango. He was 71.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Chandler was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Powhattan, Kan.

He is survived by his wife, Velna Chandler.

Robert (Bob) W. Parmenter

A family service will be held Sunday for Robert "Bob" Parmenter, a native of the Durango area, who died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Arizona from heart failure.

He was 82.

Mr. Parmenter was born in Pagosa Junction, Colo., on Aug. 18, 1918. He spent most of his life in Durango until his retirement, which he spent living in Arizona and traveling. He began his career in the automobile trade after graduating from Durango High School in 1938 and worked at several auto-part companies in the Durango area as a salesman and manager. Mr. Parmenter was involved in the Colorado Mountain Rangers for five years.

He enjoyed outdoor sports and square dancing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Alma Parmenter. He is survived by his second wife of five years, Lee Crone Parmenter of Higley, Ariz.; a daughter, Beverly Isgar Newton of Bloomfield, N.M.; a son, Darrel Parmenter of Durango; four grandchildren, Shalley Parmenter, Dustin Isgar and Jason Isgar, all of Durango, and Darrin Parmenter of Ithaca, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

John Michael Smith

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Durango Church of the Nazarene for John Michael Smith, who died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center of natural causes.

He was 58.

The Rev. Cecil Brown will officiate.

Mr. Smith was born May 16, 1943, in Sioux City, Iowa. He married Holly L. Smith on July 27, 1964, in Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Smith attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years in Vietnam. Mr. Smith retired a decorated police officer after having served in Omaha, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Phoenix. He was an active member of the Durango Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife, Holly L. Smith of Durango; his mother, Edith Lillian Scherff of Glendale, Ariz.; a daughter, Dawn Michelle Perre of Higley, Ariz.; a son, Sean Michael Smith of Durango; a brother, William F. Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Rebecca Smith of Bloomington, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Durango Church of the Nazarene Share and Care Fund, 419 San Juan Dr., Durango, CO 81301.

Maria Lupe Long

A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Maria Lupe Long, a longtime Durango resident, who died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango of natural causes. She was 92.

The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate at services. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 tonight at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary.

Mrs. Long was born May 26, 1909, in Lumberton, N.M. She was a housekeeper at the Strater Hotel for 25 years.

She enjoyed crocheting and quilting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie Long.

She is survived by three daughters, Helen Manzanares of Farmington, Priscilla Samora of Santa Clara, Calif., and Louise Runne of Upper Lake, Calif.; three brothers, Filbert Gallegos of Delta, Colo., Joe M. Gallegos of Salt Lake City, and Phillip Gallegos of Sunset, Utah; a sister, Annie Gallegos of Delta, Colo.; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Merle Duane Hill

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mercy Medical Center Chapel for Merle Duane Hill, who died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at his home in Durango of natural causes.

He was 69.

Chaplain Myron T. Darmour will officiate.

Mr. Hill was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Battle Creek, Mich. He married Jessica Irene Hill on Jan. 5, 1965, in Battle Creek, and the couple moved to Durango in 1991.

Mr. Hill was employed for 32 years by the Clark Equipment Co. in Battle Creek. He enjoyed woodworking, reading and collecting Clark memorabilia. He was a member of the Battle Creek Camper Club.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Hill of Durango; a son, Terry Hill of Battle Creek, Mich.; a daughter, Nancy Provost of Wyoming, Mich.; mother, Margaret Hill of Climax, Mich.; sister, Mary Graham of Climax, Mich.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Longman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3801 N. Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301, or to Hospice of Mercy, 375 E. Park Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

Joe (Bo) Scott

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Joe "Bo" Scott, a Durango High School graduate, who died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home in Polson, Mont., from smoke inhalation cause by a house fire. He was 39.

Mr. Scott was born Jan 12, 1962, in Albuquerque, N.M., and moved to Durango when he was 8 years old. He graduated from Durango High School and DIT Institute in Denver. He worked for Wang Computers and most recently was employed in Polson, Mont.

Mr. Scott was an avid fisherman and golfer.

He is survived by a daughter, Jessica Scott, of Bozeman, Mont.; a son, Nicholas Scott, of Kalispell, Mont.; his mother, Donna Scott, of Durango; seven brothers, Bruce Scott and Gary Lujan both of Phoenix, Donald Scott of Agna, Guam, Phil Lujan of Salt Lake City, Mike Hjermstad of Durango, Mark Vrba of Fort Collins, Colo., and Floyd Caraway of Grand Junction, Colo.; three sisters, Kellie Corn of Roswell, N.M., Charlotte Kay Ross of Kansas and Fawn Rigali, of Coalinga, Calif.; and two aunts.

Horace E. Rogers

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church for Horace E. Rogers, a longtime Durango resident, who died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center from an undetermined cause of death. He was 82.

Dr. Rick Calhoun will officiate at services.

Mr. Rogers was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Piedmont, Ala., before moving to Durango in 1953. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 48 years, and sang in the church choir for 31 years.

During World War II, Mr. Rogers served in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Railroad Division in Iran. He worked at Fort Lewis College in the Mechanical Maintenance Department until he retired in 1982.

Mr. Rogers had also been a member of the local chapter of the Barbershoppers since its beginning, and was selected Barbershopper of the Year in 1996. He was a member of the Durango Elks Lodge.

He is survived by two sisters, Estelle Lehman, of Tempe, Ariz., and Louella Puckett, of Smyrna, Ga.; a granddaughter, Shannan Guess; and three great-grandchildren of Gillsville, Ga.

Clifton Allen ‘Clif’ Burton

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Presbyterian Church of Bayfield, 89 E. Mill St., for Clifton Allen "Clif" Burton, who died Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Bayfield of an extended illness. He was 67.

The Rev. Dan Straw will officiate at the service. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Mr. Burton was born July 29, 1933, in Elwood, Ind. He married Joyce L. Emerson Sept. 22, 1957, in Rome City, Ind.

Mr. Burton served four years in the U.S. Air Force and afterward attended Purdue University in Indiana. He became a manufacturing engineer and worked in the aircraft and automotive industries. He also worked in the U.S. Department of Energy.

Mr. Burton was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and served as president of the Houston chapter. He retired to Bayfield with his wife nine years ago, where he became a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church and the Forest Lakes Metro Board.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Burton of Bayfield; three sons, Keith Burton of Pueblo, Colo., Phillip Burton of Colleyville, Texas, and Michael Burton of Louisville, Colo.; a daughter, Catharine Hardman of Security, Colo.; two sisters, Johanna Barber of Connersville, Ind., and Sue Richardson of Elwood, Ind.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
