George Alfred Smith
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday at the United Pentecostal Church for George Alfred Smith, who died Monday, June 11, 2001, at his home in Durango. He was 86.
The Rev. Dennis Hall will officiate at the service. There will be cremation.
Mr. Smith was born Feb. 3, 1915, in Texarkana, Ark. He married Wanda Jo Smith on June 5, 1940, in Bay City, Texas.
Mr. Smith was well liked and was a devoted father. He was faithful to his church.
He is survived by three daughters, Joan Harper of Hattiesburg, Miss., Nellie Haaksma of Houston, Texas, and Wanda Garner of Durango; two sons, Russell Smith of Texarkana, Texas, and Michael Smith of Bay City, Texas; one brother, Gene Smith of Bay City, Texas; three sisters, Georgie Rendon of Houston, Ernestine Fikes of Arkansas, and Shirley Barfield of Sweeny, Texas; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Jo Smith.

Sidney Howard Walker
Sidney Howard Walker of Durango died Friday, June 8, 2001, in his home of natural causes. He was 80.
The family plans on holding private services at a later date. Mr. Walker’s remains will be donated to the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine.
He is survived by his wife, June Walker of Durango; a stepdaughter, Becky Maloney of Durango; a daughter, Cheryl Ullius of West Bend, Wis.; a son, James H. Walker of Menomamee, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Anthony ‘Tony’ Dobrowolski
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Durango Elks Lodge for Edward Anthony "Tony" Dobrowolski, who died Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Durango in a motorcycle accident. He was 36.
Attendants are asked to wear a Hawaiian shirt. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Mr. Dobrowolski was born Nov. 23, 1964, in San Bernardino, Calif., and he grew up in Big Bear, Calif. He graduated from Big Bear High School, where he was involved in athletics.
Mr. Dobrowolski attended the College of the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif. He moved to Durango 10 years ago. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 15 years and enjoyed sports.
He is survived by his mother, Darlene M. Dobrowolski of Chula Vista, Calif., and a sister, Debra Simmons of Vancouver, Wash.
Memorial contributions may be made to a person’s favorite charity in Mr. Dobrowolski’s name.
Virginia Marie Watts
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Indian Mission in Ignacio for Virginia Marie Watts, a former resident of Ignacio and member of the Southern Ute Tribe, who died June 10, 2001, in Grand Junction, Colo.
The cause of death is unknown.
The Rev. Kelly Winlock will officiate at services. A wake will be held at 6 p.m. tonight at the family home, 23146 Hwy 172 in Ignacio. Burial will be at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.
Ms. Watts was born January 15, 1964, in Durango. She was raised and attended school in the Ignacio area.
Ms. Watts was a homemaker and an outdoorswoman who enjoyed fishing and camping.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Box.
She is survived by her mother, Rose Lorraine Watts of Ignacio; two sons, Craig Box and Loren Watts of Ignacio; a daughter, Candace Watts of Ignacio; a sister, Gloria Frost of Ignacio; four brothers, Tim Watts, Ralph Watts, Robert Watts and Marshall Watts, all of Ignacio; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.
Richard Allison Mason
A funeral service was held June 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ohio for Richard Allison Mason, who died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Middleport, Ohio, of lung cancer and diabetes. He was 67.
The Rev. Walter Heinz officiated at services. Entombment was at Meigs Memory Gardens in Ohio.
Mr. Mason was born June 24, 1933. He graduated from Durango High School in 1951 and attended Fort Lewis College.
Mr. Mason served in the U.S. Air Force and later moved to West Virginia where he worked for Foote Mineral Corp. until his retirement in 1998.
He enjoyed fishing and sports.
Mr. Mason is survived by three brothers, Jerry Mason of Mt. Home, Idaho, Keith Mason of Lake City, Colo., and Russell Mason of Bailey, Colo.; two sisters, Charlene Phillips of Durango and Jean Baer of Cortez; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
Mark Edward Candelaria
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Columba Catholic Church of Durango for Mark Edward Candelaria, who died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in San Bernardino, Calif. He was 39.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Hood Mortuary Chapel in Durango.
Mr. Candelaria was born on May 15, 1962, in Durango. He enjoyed wrestling, fishing, hunting and camping. He worked in the Army National Guard as a motor vehicle mechanic.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Sue Candelaria of Tucson, Ariz.; a son, Mathew Demitri Archuleta of Las Vegas; his parents, Joe Rudolph and Mary Susie Candelaria of Durango; a grandmother, Opal Petra O’Cana of Pagosa Springs; three brothers, Marcelino Thomas Candelaria of Durango, Paul Michael Candelaria of Redlands, Calif., and Rudolph Mathew Candelaria of San Diego; a sister, Monica Denise Candelaria of Durango; numerous nieces and nephews; and a grandniece.
Dorothy Sharp
A funeral will be held Saturday at Inglewood Park Cemetery
in Los Angeles for Dorothy Sharp, a former Durango resident, who died Sunday, June 3, 2001, of cancer. She was 80.
The Rev. Carol Nolte will officiate at services.
Mrs. Sharp was born on April 14, 1921, in Wisconsin. She lived in Durango from 1989 to 2000.
She was an English teacher and reading specialist, and she was active in the Lutheran church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sharp.
She is survived by her children, Durwin Sharp of Houston and Melanie Sharp of Los Angeles, and three granddaughters.

James L. Neeley
Services were held Thursday for James L. Neeley, a lifelong Four Corners resident, who died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Mesa View Retirement Home of natural causes. He was 85.
Mr. Neeley was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Mancos. He married Josephine Avaline Amyx on May 9, 1936, in Dolores.
Mr. Neeley was a house carpenter. He loved spending his time locally, especially around Mesa Verde. He wrote about his experiences in a memoir, Horsing Around Mesa Verde.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Neeley.
He is survived by his children, Byron Neeley of Mancos, Vaughn Neeley of Lewis, Cliff Neeley of Greeley, Greg Neeley of Cortez, and Kay Daves of Dove Creek; two sisters, Geneva Cox of Mancos and Winifred Mallett of Rangely; a brother, Raymond Neeley of Farmington; 17 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of Montezuma in the name of James Neeley.
Louise Y. Locke
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Greenmount Cemetery
in Durango for Louise Y. Locke, a longtime Durango resident, who died Wednesday May 30, 2001, at E. Dene Moore Nursing Home in Rifle, Colo., of natural causes. She was 88.
Mrs. Locke was born in Albuquerque, N.M., May 3, 1913. In Durango, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a book club member, a kennel club member, and a member of the Episcopal Church of Durango. She owned Lock Nash Motor Company for many years with her husband. She also worked in several other jobs, including the State of Colorado Highway Department. She retired in the late 1980s and moved to Rifle in 1989. She enjoyed reading, cooking, sewing and dogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd D. Locke.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Locke of Rifle; two sons, Don Locke and Bill Locke of Rifle; grandchildren, Jad and Alicia Locke of Rifle, and Jeffery Locke of Colorado Springs.
