Eva Allene Moore

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 5, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Bayfield for Eva Allene Moore, a lifelong Bayfield resident, who died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 63.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Pastor James Newman officiated at services.

Mrs. Moore was born April 9, 1938, in Duran, N.M., before moving to Bayfield when she was 6 months old. She married Loyd Moore.

She lived and worked in the Bayfield area all of her life. She enjoyed cooking and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, Loyd Moore of Bayfield; two daughters, Jackie Plum of Vernal, Utah, and Jeri Dawn Cylia of Tempe, Ariz.; one son, Russell Lee Newman of Westminster, Colo.; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond Ross Martinez

A service of Mass Intention will be at 6 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Church for Raymond Ross Martinez, a former Durango resident, who died April 5, 2001, in Hayward, Calif., of cancer. He was 64.

The Rev. Larry Gallegos will officiate.

Mr. Martinez was born April 30, 1936, in Cebolla, N.M. He married Elaine Martinez on June 15, 1963, in Price, Utah.

Mr. Martinez lived in Durango from 1946 to 1961. He worked at a sawmill and on the railroads, and he was a member of the Army Reserves and National Guard.

He was an outdoorsman and loved fishing, bicycling, jogging and boxing.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Martinez of Hayward; two sons, Johnny Martinez and Anthony Martinez of Hayward; a daughter, Raylene Martinez Huete of Orinda, Calif.; three brothers, Horace Martinez of Durango, Benny Martinez of Utah and Eugene Martinez of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Inez Martinez Chavez of Utah; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donna J. Kinney McLaughlin

A celebration of life will be held June 23 in Hemet, Calif., and Aug. 26 in Pueblo, Colo., for Donna J. Kinney McLaughlin, a former Durango resident who died April 4, 2001, in Hemet after a brief illness. She was 72.

Mrs. McLaughlin was born Aug. 15, 1928, in Trinidad, Colo. She married Lester McLaughlin in Pueblo on Feb. 14, 1948.

Mrs. McLaughlin lived in Durango from 1968 to 1973 and worked at Pants ‘N Things. She was involved in Rainbow Girls, Shrine Club, Eastern Star, Dance Club and the NeoDelphians.

She is survived by her husband, Lester McLaughlin; a daughter, Leslie Leonard of Pueblo; a son, Kirk McLaughlin of Bayfield; and four grandchildren, Kyle Leonard of Bozeman, Mont., Kelly Leonard of Pueblo, Ryan McLaughlin of Las Cruces, N.M., and Tyler McLaughlin of Bayfield.

Donations may be made to the Al Kaly Shrine Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 193, Pueblo, CO 81003, or to a favorite charity.

Marion Rocelle Shaffer

A service was held on March 29 at Mile High Church of Religious Science for Marion Rocelle Shaffer, a former Durango resident, who died March 25, 2001, in Denver. She was 78.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Shaffer was born Nov. 2, 1922, in LaVeta, Colo. She married James M. Shaffer on Sept. 25, 1943, in El Reno, Okla.

Mrs. Shaffer was a graduate of Durango High School and attended Western State College. She was a secretary to the superintendent of Durango public schools for many years.

She is survived by her husband, James M. Shaffer; two sons, James B. Shaffer II of Littleton, Colo., and Richard K. Shaffer of Lakewood, Colo.; a daughter, Candice Kim Jenkins of Englewood, Colo.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Matt Knight

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Ignacio for Matt Knight, a longtime Ignacio resident, who died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver following a short illness. He was 27.

The exact cause of death was not disclosed.

Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at services. Burial will be at Rosa Cemetery in Arboles.

Mr. Knight was born Nov. 13, 1973, in Des Moines, Iowa. He came to Ignacio as a boy in 1978 and attended school there. He enjoyed cars and working on them.

He is survived by his parents, Pamiellia and Thomas McCabe of Ignacio; three sons, Jessie Knight, Luke Knight and Matthew Peter Knight of Abiquiu, N.M.; grandmothers Virginia Shannon and Josephine McCabe of Des Moines, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Nancy Lee Rieke

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling, Colo., for Nancy Lee Rieke, who died Monday, April 30, 2001 in Sterling, Colo. She was 39. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Rev. T. L. Phillips will officiate at services. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Sterling, Colo.

Mrs. Rieke was born February 26, 1962 in Sterling. She married Matthew T. Thiel on September 23, 1995, in Hot Springs County, Wyo.

Mrs. Rieke graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Agriculture Business. She worked for the State of Wyoming as a consumer health specialist in the agriculture department. She enjoyed animals and reading.

She is survived by her husband, Matt Thiel of Worland, Wyo.; her mother, Edris Waggoner Rieke of Durango; two daughters, Keli Thiel and Randi Thiel of Worland, Wyo.; two sisters, Lou Ann Burkett of Dolores, and Mary Jean Rieke of Sterling, Colo.; and two brothers, Steve L. Rieke of Laramie, Wyo., and Shawn Rieke of Johnstown, Colo.

Contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Joseph Donald Archuleta

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Pagosa Springs, 451 Lewis Street, for Joseph Donald Archuleta, a longtime Pagosa Springs resident, who died Monday, April 30, 2001 of a long illness. He was 68.

Burial at Ignacio Cemetery will follow the funeral service.

Mr. Archuleta was born on March 2, 1933 in Lumberton, N.M. He married Martha E. Gallegos in 1954.

Mr. Archuleta graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was decorated for his bravery.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph D. Archuleta. He is survived by six sons, Donald Dennis Archuleta, Mike Archuleta, Lionel Archuleta, Raul Archuleta, Charley Archuleta and Kevin Archuleta; a daughter, Nina Anastasia Archuleta-Stoltar; two brothers, Manuel Archuleta and Alfonso Archuleta; two sisters, Margaret Daugaard and Paulette Archuleta; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gary W. Erickson

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Cortez for Gary Warren Erickson, a longtime Cortez resident, who died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington of natural causes. He was 56.

The Rev. Lynn Evans will officiate at the service. Burial will be at Cortez Cemetery.

Mr. Erickson was born on June 22, 1945 in Montrose. He married Trudy Sells on December 16, 1967 in Shiprock. The couple moved to the Cortez area in 1976.

Mr. Erickson was a member of the Civitans and the American Legion. He enjoyed the outdoors. He was a published poet.

He is preceded in death by a daughter, Leshon Erickson.

He is survived by his wife, Trudy Erickson of Cortez; his son, Jon Erickson of Cortez; his parents, Ann and Kenneth "Bud" Erickson of Cortez; his brother, Kenneth Erickson of Dolores; his sister, Linda West of Cortez; and five nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Vectra Bank, 350 W. Montezuma Ave., Cortez, CO 81321, in Gary Erickson’s name to the Leshon Erickson Memorial Fund.

Bergen E. Roe

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery for Bergen E. Roe, who died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at his home in Durango of natural causes. He was 80.

Mr. Roe was born on July 2, 1921 in Seymour, Texas. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1939 and joined the Navy, where he served until 1945.

He married Evelyn McLarty on Jan. 6, 1943, in Seymour, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Roe moved to Durango in April to be close to family.

Mr. Roe attended Hospital Corps School in San Diego while he was in the Navy. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Gridley and U.S.S. Holland.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; a son, Delbert Roe of White Wright, Texas; a daughter, Mary Orbison of Durango; and five grandchildren.
