Alton T. Tyler

Interment services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greenmount Cemetery for Alton T. "Red" Tyler, a World War II veteran, who died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, of a stroke. He was 79.

Arrangements for services will be through Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Tyler received a degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M and a MBA in finance from Stanford University. He served as a 1st lieutenant in World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received all five of the European battle stars at the end of the war. He was attached to the First Infantry Division that met with the Russians in Pilen, Czechoslovakia.

Mr. Tyler worked in the oil pipeline industry for 56 years, designing and engineering pipeline projects around the world. He had been president of various pipeline engineering firms for 30 years. Approaching his 80th birthday he still insisted on continuing work in Bolivia with his company, International Pipeline Engineers, which he created in 1973. Mr. Tyler moved to Durango in 1996 with his wife Marilyn.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Tyler of Durango; two daughters, Christine Todd of Dallas, Texas, and Melissa Field of Ashville, N.C.; a son Gerald Tyler of Houston, Texas; a sister, Alice Loftis of Tyler, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Melinda Christina Garcia

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango for Melinda Christina Garcia, a longtime Durango resident, who died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyo. She was 90.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery. A rosary will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Mrs. Garcia was born Jan. 6, 1911, in Tierra Amarillo, N.M. She was a very active and faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and was devoted to the care of her family. She moved to Wyoming to be near her daughter in 1995.

She is survived by her daughter, Bertha Sandoval of Mills. Wyo.; a son, Roger Garcia of Colorado Springs; three sisters, Rose Archuleta of Durango, and Adelina Lovato and Mary Archuleta, both of Pagosa Springs; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cipriano Garcia in 1988, her son Gilbert Garcia in 1968 and her daughter Viola Velasquez in 2000.

Kerry John Millard

A private memorial service will be held for Kerry John Millard who died May 9, 2001, in Durango. He was 31.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Millard was born in California on April 25, 1970, and moved to Durango 6 years ago where he was self employed.

He is survived by his parents, Norman and Charlene Millard; two sisters, Cindy and Laurie; a brother, Danny; and his fiancee, Cheryl Casperson.

Helen M. Claymon

Funeral Services were held Monday at Crown Hill Mortuary in Denver for Helen M. Claymon, a former Durango resident, who died Thursday, May 1, 2001, at St. John’s Hospice in Denver of lung cancer. She was 79.

Mrs. Claymon was born July 25, 1921, in Durango. She graduated from Durango High School in 1939.

She worked as a bookkeeper for different companies in Denver.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Al Warren and Melvin Claymon of Denver.

She is survived by a brother, John Becay of Denver, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Josephine Gonzales

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Josephine Gonzales, a longtime Durango resident, who died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. The cause of death was not disclosed. She was 64.

Mrs. Gonzales was born Feb. 5, 1937, in Milner, Colo. She married Nicholas T. Gonzales on Jan. 22, 1955, in Hayden, Colo.

Mrs. Gonzales owned and operated the Hair Depot for several years and managed the Americana Beauty College and worked with several other beauty shops in Durango. She worked at Montgomery Wards of Durango and Animas Valley Carpet as a bookkeeper, and as an office manager for local dentist Dean Brown.

She is survived by her husband, Nicholas of Durango; two sons, John P. Gonzales and David Gonzales of Durango; one daughter, Tracine Bevans of Torrington, Wyo.; a sister, Jonell Backes of Milner, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the American Heart Association La Plata County Heart Fund, P.O. Box 1777, Durango, CO 81302.

Thurlow Garth Osgood

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec for Thurlow Garth Osgood, who died Monday, May 7, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 86.

Jack Wheat will officiate at services. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Farmington. Visitation will be today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec.

Mr. Osgood was born Jan. 25, 1915. He married Lillie Osgood.

Mr. Osgood was a self-taught musician and played the guitar professionally and for recreation.

He is preceded in death by his son, Allan Osgood, and grandson, K.C. Schultz.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie; two daughters, JoAnn Schultz of Durango and Colleen Bruner of Arkansas; a son, Matthew Osgood of Dallas; three brothers, Leroy Osgood, Virgil Osgood and Dean Osgood; three sisters, Liala Scalf, Ruth Ellis and June Lee; four grandchildren, Rick Treaster, DiDi Hudson, Lukas Schultz and Kayla Schultz; and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lillie Osgood to offset funeral expenses. They can be sent to Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, 404 S. Main St., Aztec, NM 87410.

Jerry Blake Tibbetts

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Hood Mortuary for Jerry Blake Tibbetts, a Durango resident, who died Monday, May 7, 2001, in Farmington. He was 62.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary.

Mr. Tibbetts was born Aug. 26, 1938, in Quitique, Texas.

Mr. Tibbetts was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks No. 507, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 and American Legion Trujillo Sheets Post No. 28. He enjoyed horse racing, cooking, reading and storytelling. He was a member of a Heavy Equipment Operators Union. He retired to Durango in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Joe Tibbetts and Richard Tibbetts of Ignacio; a mother, Jimmie Tibbetts; a grandson, Wyatt Thomas of Vallecito; and a niece and nephew.

William 'Buck' White

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today in Kermit, Texas, for William "Buck" White, a Kermit resident for 32 years, who died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Kermit Health Care Center. He was 89.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. White was born April 20, 1912, in Grandview, Okla. He married Noma Haga on July 16, 1944, in Santa Rosa, N.M.

He is survived by his wife, Noma White of Kermit; two sons, Bobby Harold Hardman of Bloomfield, N.M., and Gary Wayne Hardman of Clovis, N.M.; two daughters, Donna Jean VanDenBerg of Bayfield, and Jacquelyn Norton of Kermit, Texas; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ethel R. Johnson

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church for Ethel R. Johnson, a longtime Durango resident, who died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center. She was 89.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

The Rev. John Knutson will officiate services. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery after the funeral services.

Mrs. Johnson was born Feb. 5, 1912, in Nadeau, Mich., before moving to Durango in 1959. She married Stuart Johnson on June 25, 1932, at Escanaba, Mich.

Mrs. Johnson was an avid reader and a published poet. She is a member of the Christ the King Lutheran Church and enjoyed time with her family.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart.

She is survived by one son, Dennis Johnson of Durango; one daughter, Teesa Kutowy of Durango; two sisters, Norma Trout of California, and Joan Formolo of Michigan; four grandchildren, Mark Kutowy, Michelle Rodri, Nicole Johnson, and Martine Smith; and three great-grandchildren.
