Lois Edna Hickman
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bayfield for Lois Edna Hickman, a graduate of Durango High School, who died Saturday at her home in Bayfield. She was 82.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. James Newman will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Pine River Cemetery.
Mrs. Hickman was born June 8, 1918, in Pawnee, Okla. She married Edward L. Hickman on Dec. 16, 1939, in Aztec. She worked for a state senator for awhile and then was head cook with the Bayfield School District for 24 years. Mrs. Hickman was active with the Sarah Rebecca Lodge and other women’s organizations. She was a devoted Christian and church member. She enjoyed a variety of crafts and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her son, Harland Hickman.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Hickman, of Bayfield; a daughter, Caroline Shupe of Bayfield; two sons, Harvey Hickman of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Howard Hickman of Parachute, Colo.; a sister, Nellie Kinslow of Utah; five brothers, Frank Robbins of California, Alfred Robbins of Durango, Charles Robbins of Arizona, Harold Robbins of Nebraska, and Donald Robbins of Denver; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

John E. Baker Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for John E. Baker Sr., former Southern Ute Chairman, who died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home in Ignacio. He was 82.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio. A rosary service will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Baker was born April 25, 1918, in Ignacio. He served overseas in the Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe where in addition to being chairman, he served as a tribal council member for many years. Mr. Baker played a role in developing various tribal programs over the years. He enjoyed the outdoors and gunsmith work.
He was preceded in death by three children, Michael, Zelda and Alice.
He is survived by his wife, Lula Baker of Ignacio; two sons, John E. Baker Jr. and Ernest Baker of Ignacio; a daughter, Angela Baker of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Chris Baker of Ignacio; and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
Vera E. Ambold
Vera E. Ambold, a native and longtime resident of Durango, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001 at her home in Maryville, Tenn., of natural causes. She was 88.
No services will be held.
Ms. Ambold was born Jan. 2, 1913, in Durango. She lived at the same home on Third Avenue for 70 years. She worked as a bookkeeper, secretary and Realtor. Ms. Ambold never had children but helped raise a niece and two great-nieces. She enjoyed reading and cooking.
She is survived by her niece, Charlene Underwood of Dandridge, Tenn,; two great-nieces, Kim Gillis of Deer Park, Wash., and Connie Wilkinson of Maryville, Tenn.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a local hospice.
Grace S. Dunkley
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at McAuley & Wallace Mortuary in Fullerton, Calif., for Grace S. Dunkley, who died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her home in Durango of natural causes. She was 93.
Mrs. Dunkley was born July 31, 1907, in Preston, Idaho. She was a professor at the University of Southern California and Arizona State University.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph W. Dunkley and son, Reed Dunkley.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Mattson of Fallbrook, Calif., and Faye Gosche of Durango; a son, Lynn Dunkley of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Lowell Smith of Pocatello, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Nancy Jean Mahan-Denbo
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gazebo at Rotary Park for Nancy Jean Mahan-Denbo, a lifelong Durango resident, who died June 1, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center after an extended illness. She was 48.
A reception will follow services at the American Legion. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mrs. Mahan-Denbo was born March 6, 1953, in Durango.
She is survived by four children, Kimberly Mahan of Farmington, Krysten Williams of Durango, David Fisher of Wyoming and Mallory Vesper of Durango; two brothers, Bob Driver of Dove Creek and twin brother Danny Driver of Durango; a sister, Cindy Barnes of Germany; her father, Carl Driver of California; and two grandchildren, Alan-Michael Williams and Iesha-Rae Williams, both of Durango.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, David Mahan.
Melvin Louis Hover
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven Memorial Park Funeral Chapel in Lubbock, Texas, for Melvin Louis Hover, who died May 22, 2001, of natural causes in San Antonio, Texas. He was 66.
Interment will be in Pagosa Springs.
Mr. Hover was born March 11, 1935, in Tacoma Park, Md. He married Michelle Hover.
Mr. Hover served 23 years in the Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle; nine children; and seven grandchildren.
Samuel Miller
A memorial service for Samuel Miller, former Durango mayor and longtime business owner, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel in Durango, 501 Camino del Rio.
Mr. Miller died Dec. 20, 2000, at his home in Louisville, Colo.
Ruby Lea Batie
A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Hermosa Drive Church of Christ in Artesia, N.M., for Ruby Lea Batie, former Bayfield resident, who died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 in Grants, N.M., of natural causes. She was 90.
Roby Zumwalt will officiate. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Terpening and Son Mortuary in Artesia, N.M., Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery.
Mrs. Batie was born on September 7, 1910 in Wise County, Texas. She married Warren W. Batie on May 9, 1926 in Lamesa, Texas.
Mrs. Batie and her husband started one of the first modern supermarkets in New Mexico. They are featured in a museum in Artesia, N.M.
Together they operated numerous supermarkets and convenience stores. Following retirement in the grocery business, they raised and showed Suffolk sheep. Mrs. Batie was a member of the Grants Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Warren W. Batie of Grants, N.M.; children, Eugene Batie of Odessa, Texas, Elvis Batie of Grants, N.M., Don Batie of Chico, Calif., and Laverne Jones of Grants, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Jeffrey Blair Sligo
Jeffrey Blair Sligo, former resident of Durango, died Friday, May 25, 2001 in Phoenix, Ariz. of a sudden illness. He was 34.
Mr. Blair was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on July 25, 1966.
He is survived by his wife, Joana Maier of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Helen Maier-Sligo of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sons, Jason Sligo, Brett Sligo and Darin Sligo of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a sister, Stephanie Baker.
Jeronimo McWilliams
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango, 254 East Fifth Ave., for Jeronimo McWilliams, who died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Farmington after an extended illness. He was 81.
Mr. McWilliams was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Ensenada, N.M. He was married to Dorothy McWilliams.
Mr. McWilliams was a World War II veteran. He worked as a miner in Colorado for 31 years. He raised cattle near Tierra Amarilla, N.M., for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy McWilliams of Bloomfield, N.M.; daughters, Betty Gomez of Boise, Idaho, and Carol Gallegos of Durango; a son, Mike McWilliams of Windsor, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Lydia M. Archuleta
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary of Durango, 1261 East Third Ave., for Lydia M. Archuleta who died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Phoenix. She was 80.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Ms. Archuleta was born in San Miguel, N.M., on March 24, 1921. She lived in Phoenix for the past 15 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Velma Gallegos and Pearl Bowman of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Ernest Martinez of Santa Fe, N.M.; five sisters, Ida Romero of Antonito, Colo., Eudlia Trujillo of Alamosa, Colo., Frances Blacker of Durango, Marie McBride of Pueblo, Colo., and Elva Tokarski of Salem, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
