Corene Ball

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Durango Christian Church for Corene Ball, who died Friday, April 13, 2001, from complications from a lengthy illness. She was 63.

A luncheon will follow the ceremony at the church.

Mrs. Ball was born Aug. 7, 1937, in Altus, Okla. Her family moved to Michigan when she was young. She married Randy Ball on June 20, 1959. They have been married for 42 years. They have lived in Durango for the past 18 years. Mrs. Ball’s passion in life was her children.

She is survived by her husband, Randy Ball; a son, Steven Ball of Cortez; a daughter, Darcy Barela of Durango; five grandchildren, Brandon and Ryan Barela, Dylan, Kaitlin and Lauryn Ball; five sisters, Mary Cooley, Alice Davis, Pat Roof, Norma Stahl and Hope Tucker; six brothers, Grant, Ray, Roger, Robert, Doug and Gary Uribe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Home Health Care at Mercy Medical Center, 3801 N. Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

LaNeve C. Davis

A private memorial service for family was held Saturday for LaNeve Cleora "Mrs. Slim" Davis who died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Farmington, N.M. She was 81.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington.

Mrs. Davis was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Walla Walla, Wash. LaNeve and Francis "Slim" Davis settled in Durango in 1942, and started their own business of Slims Delivery Service. LaNeve also drove a school bus in Durango for 22 years, and worked many years for The Durango Herald. They retired in 1993, and moved to the Cedar Hill, N.M., area.

She is survived by six children, Frances LaNeve Dilts, Willo A. Balfrey, Merril O. Davis, Alan G. Davis, Tania L. Stone and Aloha C. Conner; 20 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Edgar "Slim" Davis.

In lieu of flowers, the family expresses appreciation to anyone who would make a donation to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga., 30309.

Clifford Beecher Whyte

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church for Clifford Beecher Whyte, a lifelong Towaoc, Colo., resident, who died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, N.M. He was 66.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Interment will follow services at the Cortez Cemetery. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Whyte was born Oct. 19, 1934, in Towaoc. He attended Ignacio Indian School, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He married Mildred "Millie" Watts on May 15, 1963, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Millie of Towaoc; 11 children, Rose White Chavez of Roswell, N.M., Donald Whyte and Kristi Sharpeta of Mesa Verde, Melanie Garcia of San Felipe Pueblo, N.M., Fawnda Cotonuts of Towaoc, Eric Whyte and Lorraine Begay of Mancos Creek, Clyde Whyte of Clifton, Colo., Valerie Whyte and Darren Whiteman of Towaoc, and Madonna Whyte of Towaoc; 19 grandchildren; one great-grand child; and a sister, Karen Whyte Mills.

She is preceded in death by two sons, Clifford Whyte Jr. and Gordon Watts.

Memorial contributions can be made in Clifford Watts’ name to Vectra Bank, 350 W. Montezuma, Cortez, CO 81321 to benefit the MCHS Marching Bank. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Jason Ray Horn

A memorial service was held Monday, April 9, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Minco, Okla. for Jason Ray Horn. He was 34.

Mr. Horn was born March 2, 1967 in Chickasha, Okla.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, a daughter, Mary Beth, and a son, Jason E., all of Lexington, Okla.; a brother, Michael Horn of Minco; parents, Billy and Donna Horn of Bayfield, and June and Bill Roddam of Mustang, Okla.; and a grandmother, Lola Horn of Minco.

Ashley Ellis Stetson

A memorial service was held April 7 at Church of the Nativity in Raleigh, N.C., for Ashley Ellis Stetson who died Wednesday, April 4, 2001 in Raleigh. He was 88.

Mr. Stetson was born in Buckland, Mass., on Oct. 12, 1912.

He was a retired regional manager and personnel trainer with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. He volunteered many years of service to his church.

Mr. Stetson was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Barbara Stetson, and a son, Ashley Ellis Stetson, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Montez Brown Stetson; daughters Andree Stetson of Durango, Cheryl Matthews of Atlanta, Ga., and Robin Ann Stetson of Dripping Springs, Texas; sons Keith Elisabeth Stetson of El Cerrito, Calif., and C.P. Matthews Jr. of Cary, N. C.; and four grandchildren including Tor Ashley Stetson-Lee and Teal Elizabeth Stetson-Lee of Durango.

John Henry Nordmann

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Beloved Community Church for John Henry Nordmann, a devoted father, who died Friday, April 6, 2001. He was 60.

Mr. Nordmann was born Nov. 19, 1941 in Clinton, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He also loved the carnival.

Mr. Nordmann is survived by his wife, Diane, of Durango; two sons, John Nordmann of Las Cruces, N.M., and Tony Mayo, of Durango; two daughters, Mia Thompson of Durango, and Gina Mayo of Sacramento, Calif.; and, 15 grandchildren.

William R. 'Bill' Johnson

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Adamson Memorial West Chapel in Greeley, Colo., for William R. "Bill" Johnson, a former rancher, who died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. He was 78.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Adamson Memorial West Chapel. Cremation will follow services on Thursday. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date at the Beaver Corrals, near Dolores.

Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Cortez. He ranched in Montezuma and Dolores counties until 1958. He married Anna Mae West on Dec. 25, 1944, in Aztec. They moved to Greeley in the late 1960s.

Mr. Johnson worked for the state as a brand inspector from 1959-82, when he retired. He then worked for Greeley Producers Livestock as a sales representative.

Mr. Johnson was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Cortez and later a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Alamosa, Colo. He was a member of Greeley-Evans Moose Lodge No. 909.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Johnson; two sons, Bill L. Johnson of La Salle, Colo., and Shane Johnson of Limon, Colo.; three daughters, Sharon Johnson of Pagosa Springs, and Libby Allinder and Darla Roian Bullock of Greeley; two sisters, Josephine Greenlee and Catherine Lichliter of Cortez; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, c/o Adamson Memorial West Chapel, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.

Opal A. Crane

Services will be held Saturday in Dodge City, Kan., for Opal A. Crane, a former Dodge City resident who died Monday, April 9 at her home in Durango. She was 98.

Mrs. Crane was born Oct. 19, 1902, in Colby, Kan. She married Clifford E. Crane Aug. 29, 1920, in Dodge City, Kan., where they lived for 63 years until his death in 1984.

Mrs. Crane was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Dodge City for many years and taught the Victoria Sunday School Class for more than 50 years.

She was involved in Girl Scouts and knitted sweaters during World War II for European children and for her own grandchildren throughout the years, and was an avid reader and a user of talking books when she lost her eyesight.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford E. Crane, and a son, Clifford E. Crane Jr.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Reddy; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

George Robert Simons

There will be a family memorial at a later date for George Robert Simons, who died Wednesday, April 4,
2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango. He was 91.

Mr. Simons was born May 18, 1909, in Kremlin, Okla. He was a resident of Durango for the past six years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Wilma Louise Carr Simons.

Mr. Simons is survived by a sister, Kathryn Lipe of Texas; brother John Simons of Indiana; three sons, Bob Simons of Allison, Don Simons of California and Ed Simons of Durango; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Contributions may be made to the Hospice of Mercy, 3801 N. Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301.
