Mattie Lila Brock

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crestview Cemetery for Mattie Lila Brock, a homemaker and professional nanny, who died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Denver. She was 96.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Brock was born April 28, 1904, in Dundee, Minn., before moving to Eastern Colorado in 1908 and settling near Genoa.

She married George W. Brock in 1925. Around 1943 they moved to Durango where she lived for 40 years.

She is survived by a son, David; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Donna Bartley Jernegan; and a son, Merlin.

Gwen Nickle Maxedon

A private memorial service will be in Durango for Gwen Nickle Maxedon, a two-year Durango resident, who died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at her home in Durango from cancer. She was 50.

There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary Crematory.

Mrs. Maxedon was born Nov. 19, 1950, in Salt Lake City. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in Midville, Utah, in 1969 and married R.P. "Peck" Maxedon on March 22, 1980, in Elko, Nev.

Mrs. Maxedon enjoyed cooking, gardening, and arts and crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Peck, of Durango; a daughter, Amber Carn of Salt Lake City; a son, Zack Maxedon of Durango; and three brothers, Scott Nickle of St. George, Utah, Gordon Nickle of Salt Lake City, and Jeff Nickle of Albuquerque, N.M.

Memorial contributions may be made to Four Corners Oncology, C/O First National Bank Attn: Wendy Schlyer, P.O. Box L, Durango, CO 81302.

Harvey Otis Young

A celebration of life and a potluck dinner will be at noon Saturday at the Dolores Community Center for Harvey Otis Young, a lifelong rancher, who died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in Durango. He was 87.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mr. Young was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Colorado Springs. He moved to Durango in September from Mancos. He was married to Beverly Murphy Young for 48 years.

Mr. Young graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a degree in mechanical engineering. He did graduate work at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and served in the Army Air Corps, both in the states and overseas. He ranched in Dry Creek Basin, Disappointment Valley and Summit Ridge. He was a long-time member of the Farm Bureau and was honored with state awards for his service. He also served on several executive boards.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Durango; four children, Beverly Baril of Roanoke, Va.; Max Witkind of Tucson, Ariz.; Jane Morehart of Durango; and Clemence Overholt of Phoenix, Ariz.; three granddaughters, Jeffe Morehart, Jamie Morehart and Jeremie Morehart of Durango; and four grandsons, Travis Witkind and Ilan Baril of Denver, David Baril of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Thomas Overholt of Tempe, Ariz.

Contributions may be made to the Fort Lewis Foundation, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

Nancy Lee Rieke

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home in Sterling, Colo., for Nancy Lee Rieke, who died Monday, April 30, 2001 in Sterling, Colo. She was 39. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Rev. T. L. Phillips will officiate at services. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Sterling, Colo.

Mrs. Rieke was born February 26, 1962 in Sterling. She married Matthew T. Thiel on September 23, 1995, in Hot Springs County, Wyo.

Mrs. Rieke graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Agriculture Business. She worked for the State of Wyoming as a consumer health specialist in the agriculture department. She enjoyed animals and reading.

She is survived by her husband, Matt Thiel of Worland, Wyo.; her mother, Edris Waggoner Rieke of Durango; two daughters, Keli Thiel and Randi Thiel of Worland, Wyo.; two sisters, Lou Ann Burkett of Dolores, and Mary Jean Rieke of Sterling, Colo.; and two brothers, Steve L. Rieke of Laramie, Wyo., and Shawn Rieke of Johnstown, Colo.

Contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Joseph Donald Archuleta

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Pagosa Springs, 451 Lewis Street, for Joseph Donald Archuleta, a longtime Pagosa Springs resident, who died Monday, April 30, 2001 of a long illness. He was 68.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial at Ignacio Cemetery will follow the funeral service.

Mr. Archuleta was born on March 2, 1933 in Lumberton, N.M. He married Martha E. Gallegos in 1954.

Mr. Archuleta graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was decorated for his bravery.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph D. Archuleta.

He is survived by six sons, Donald Dennis Archuleta, Mike Archuleta, Lionel Archuleta, Raul Archuleta, Charley Archuleta and Kevin Archuleta; a daughter, Nina Anastasia Archuleta-Stoltar; two brothers, Manuel Archuleta and Alfonso Archuleta; two sisters, Margaret Daugaard and Paulette Archuleta; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Shirley Mae ‘Candie’ Cleveland

Services were held April 26 at the Moose Lodge in Pahrump, Nev., for Shirley Mae "Candie" Cleveland, a former Durango resident, who died April 23 at her home in Pahrump, Nev. She was 65.

The cause of death was not disclosed.

Mrs. Cleveland was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Chicago. She later married Robert Cleveland. The couple lived in El Monte, Calif., before moving to Durango in 1974, where they opened Durango Muffler Service. They moved to Pahrump, Nev., in 1989.

Mrs. Cleveland enjoyed Gospel singing and wagon-train trips through Death Valley.

She worked in retail and since moving to Pahrump, was an active member of Women of the Moose and was once a Senior Regent for the Moose.

She is survived by her husband, Bob Cleveland of Pahrump, Nev.; two sons, Honce Cleveland of Pahrump, Nev., and Tony Cleveland of Durango; a daughter, Robin Connelly of Pahrump, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia Escolostica Albo

A mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Virginia Escolostica Albo, a lifelong Durango resident, who died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center of natural causes. She was 64.

Rev. Joseph L. Gallegos will officiate at services. A recitation of the rosary will be at 6 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Ms. Albo was born February 1, 1937, in Durango. She worked for many years at the COD Laundry & Dry Cleaners and at the Mandarin Restaurant. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She is survived by seven sons, five daughters, 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, six brothers, a sister and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert Klusman

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary for Robert W. Klusman, who died Monday, April 30, 2001, on the family ranch in Oxford of natural causes. He was 81.

Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery.

Mr. Klusman was born Oct. 27, 1919, in La Junta, Colo. The Klusman family moved to Oxford soon afterward.

Mr. Klusman graduated from Durango High School and worked on the family ranch until he entered the Marine Corps where he served with the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II.

He returned home and married LaVerne McEwen on Feb. 20, 1947, in Farmington, and they continued farming and ranching until his death.

Mr. Klusman served on the Morrison Consolidated Ditch Board, the Pine River Irrigation District Board and the local Cemetery District Board. He was a member of the San Juan Woolgrowers, a charter member of the Oxford Grange and a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Klusman of Oxford; two daughters, Twilla Hieber of Oxford and Linda Berecka of Grapevine, Texas; a son, Ralph Klusman of Oxford; four grandchildren, Casey and Meghan Berecka of Grapevine, Texas, and Kate and Lane Kusman of Oxford; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
