Ronald Eugene Wilkinson
A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Columba Catholic Church for Ronald Eugene Wilkinson, a Master Sgt. in the U.S. Marine Corp, who died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, in Torrance, Calif. He was 58.
Father Mike McCleary will officiate at services. Burial will be at Crestview Cemetery
in Durango.
Mr. Wilkinson was born Sept. 27, 1942, in Montrose, Colo. He was raised in the Durango area and graduated from Durango High School.
Mr. Wilkinson joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1960 and retired as a Master Sgt. in 1983. While in the service, he was stationed in many different locations around the world. After he retired, he worked for companies involved with moving military families around the world.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ronnie Ann Wilkinson.
He is survived by his mother, Ada Ann Wilkinson, of Durango; two sons, Wesley Wilkinson of Las Vegas, and Mike Wilkinson of Torrance, Calif.; a daughter, Kimberly Baumgart of Santa Maria, Calif.; a sister, Patricia Coker of Grand Junction, Colo.; and three grandsons.
Elizabeth Anne 'Anne' Ewing
Services will be held in California for Elizabeth Anne "Anne" Ewing, who died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at her home in Alameda, Calif., from a lingering illness. She was 83.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Greenmount Cemetery.
Miss Ewing was born July 5, 1917, in Hurley, N.M., and was raised in Durango. She was the daughter of William Dudley and Helen (Pruitt) Ewing. Her father was a prominent citizen, historian and businessman of Durango. Her family owned and operated the Federal Lumber Co., and donated the land where Fort Lewis College is located.
Miss Ewing was born with cerebral palsy. She never attended public school but was home-tutored.
Her father tried several times unsuccessfully to establish a school for the disabled in Durango.
When the United Cerebral Palsy Center was established in Denver in 1953, the Ewing family moved there for her to attend the school. She received therapy and basic education.
She is survived by her longtime friend and caregiver, Helen Prince of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and cousins, Libby Ewing McWilliams of Denver, and Martha Pollock of San Diego, Calif.
Mattie Lila Brock
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Crestview Cemetery
for Mattie Lila Brock, a homemaker and professional nanny, who died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Denver. She was 96.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Brock was born April 28, 1904, in Dundee, Minn., before moving to Eastern Colorado in 1908 and settling near Genoa.
She married George W. Brock in 1925. Around 1943 they moved to Durango where she lived for 40 years.
She is survived by a son, David; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Donna Bartley Jernegan; and a son, Merlin.
Gwen Nickle Maxedon
A private memorial service will be in Durango for Gwen Nickle Maxedon, a two-year Durango resident, who died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at her home in Durango from cancer. She was 50.
There will be cremation at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mrs. Maxedon was born Nov. 19, 1950, in Salt Lake City. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in Midville, Utah, in 1969 and married R.P. "Peck" Maxedon on March 22, 1980, in Elko, Nev.
Mrs. Maxedon enjoyed cooking, gardening, and arts and crafts.
She is survived by her husband, Peck, of Durango; a daughter, Amber Carn of Salt Lake City; a son, Zack Maxedon of Durango; and three brothers, Scott Nickle of St. George, Utah, Gordon Nickle of Salt Lake City, and Jeff Nickle of Albuquerque, N.M.

Harvey Otis Young
A celebration of life and a potluck dinner will be at noon Saturday at the Dolores Community Center for Harvey Otis Young, a lifelong rancher, who died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in Durango. He was 87.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Young was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Colorado Springs. He moved to Durango in September from Mancos. He was married to Beverly Murphy Young for 48 years.
Mr. Young graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a degree in mechanical engineering. He did graduate work at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and served in the Army Air Corps, both in the states and overseas. He ranched in Dry Creek Basin, Disappointment Valley and Summit Ridge. He was a long-time member of the Farm Bureau and was honored with state awards for his service. He also served on several executive boards.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Durango; four children, Beverly Baril of Roanoke, Va.; Max Witkind of Tucson, Ariz.; Jane Morehart of Durango; and Clemence Overholt of Phoenix, Ariz.; three granddaughters, Jeffe Morehart, Jamie Morehart and Jeremie Morehart of Durango; and four grandsons, Travis Witkind and Ilan Baril of Denver, David Baril of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Thomas Overholt of Tempe, Ariz.

Lois Edna Hickman
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bayfield for Lois Edna Hickman, a graduate of Durango High School, who died Saturday at her home in Bayfield. She was 82.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
The Rev. James Newman will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Pine River Cemetery.
Mrs. Hickman was born June 8, 1918, in Pawnee, Okla. She married Edward L. Hickman on Dec. 16, 1939, in Aztec. She worked for a state senator for awhile and then was head cook with the Bayfield School District for 24 years. Mrs. Hickman was active with the Sarah Rebecca Lodge and other women’s organizations. She was a devoted Christian and church member. She enjoyed a variety of crafts and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her son, Harland Hickman.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Hickman, of Bayfield; a daughter, Caroline Shupe of Bayfield; two sons, Harvey Hickman of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Howard Hickman of Parachute, Colo.; a sister, Nellie Kinslow of Utah; five brothers, Frank Robbins of California, Alfred Robbins of Durango, Charles Robbins of Arizona, Harold Robbins of Nebraska, and Donald Robbins of Denver; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

John E. Baker Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for John E. Baker Sr., former Southern Ute Chairman, who died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home in Ignacio. He was 82.
The Rev. Eddy Andary will officiate at services. Burial will follow services at Ouray Memorial Cemetery
in Ignacio. A rosary service will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Baker was born April 25, 1918, in Ignacio. He served overseas in the Army during World War II as a surgical technician. He was a member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe where in addition to being chairman, he served as a Tribal Council member for many years. Mr. Baker played a role in developing various tribal programs over the years. He enjoyed the outdoors and gunsmith work.
He is survived by his wife, Lula Baker of Ignacio; two sons, John E. Baker Jr., and Ernest Baker of Ignacio; a daughter, Angela Baker of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, Chris Baker of Ignacio; and numerous grand and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two children, Michael and Zelda.
Helen Ballard Schissler
A private memorial service was held for Helen Ballard Schissler, a Durango High School graduate who died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at home in Estes Park, Colo.
She was 56. The cause of death was undisclosed.
Mrs. Schissler was born May 3, 1944, in Durango. She married Everett Schissler on March 25, 1989, in Lakewood, Colo.
Mrs. Schissler lived in Arvada, Colo., and traveled with her husband in their motor home between 1994 and 1996. They moved to Estes Park in 1996, where she worked for the Estes Park Aerial Tramway. She enjoyed painting, crocheting, knitting and cooking.
She is survived by her husband, Everett Schissler of Estes Park; father, Charles Ballard of Montrose, Colo.; son, Roger D. Talbert of Thornton, Colo.; three daughters, Jennifer Carlson of Wheat Ridge, Colo., Tonja Gibson of Monument, Colo., and Kara Rosenstrauch of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Charles L. Ballard of Belgrade, Mont.; and a sister, Diane Bunten of Montrose.
John J. Hersch
A cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory for John J. Hersch who died Friday, March 30, 2001, at his home in Durango. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was 72.
A Celebration of Life will be observed at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield.
Mr. Hersch was born March 9, 1929 in Del Norte, Colo. He attended schools in Pagosa Springs and Del Norte.
He graduated from Del Norte High School, attended Adams State College and served with the Air Force.
He was a member of the Cortez B.P.O. Elks, the Cortez Masonic Lodge #133 and a Shriner in Durango. Mr. Hersch had several businesses in Cortez, Pagosa Springs and Durango. He was a respected commercial pilot.
He is survived by two sons, Troy Jon Hersch, of Waukomis, Okla., and Trenton Jay Hersch, of Stavanger, Norway; two brothers, David W. Hersch, of Port Orchard, Wash. and Richard E. Hersch, of Marysville, Wash.; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
