Agnes Wetherington Nichols
Agnes Wetherington Nichols died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Denver. She was 84.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. Nichols was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Wolf, Okla. She was a former resident of the Durango area.
Mrs. Nichols was a retired hairdresser. She lived in Aurora, Colo.
Survivors include her son, Richard Nichols of Placerville, Calif.; a daughter, Rhonda Nichols of Aurora, Colo.; four sisters, Vinice Apperson of Raymond, Wash., Artie Peterson of Alexandria, Va., Barbara Puryear of Bayfield and LaQuita Wagner of Bloomfield, N.M.; a brother, Robert Wetherington of Hatfield, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Jan. 4 at Aurora Village in Aurora, and memorial services will be held Sunday, Jan. 14 at the Nichols residence in Placerville, Calif.

Doris 'Marchie' McKesson-Dolph
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Pine River Cemetery
for Doris "Marchie" McKesson-Dolph, who died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Four Corners Health Care Center. She was 84.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mrs. McKesson-Dolph was born March 1, 1916, in Kersey, Colo. She married Lewis McKesson in 1945. Following his death, she married Glenn Dolph, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. McKesson-Dolph moved to Durango 4˝ years ago to be near her daughters. She enjoyed playing golf, watercolor painting and music.
Survivors include her children, Mike McKesson of Apple Valley, Calif., Barbara Longfellow and Patty Griffith, both of Bayfield, and Scott McKesson of Oceanside, Calif.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Schaefer of Petaluma, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert C. (Bob) Flagg
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church of Durango for Robert C. (Bob) Flagg of Durango, who died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, following a stroke. He was 74.
Mr. Flagg retired from the Bendix-Honeywell Corporation, Kansas City, Mo., in 1988 after 30 years as a tool and die maker.
Upon retirement, Mr. Flagg and his wife, Barbara, moved to Durango where he was active in the Durango Masonic Lodge No. 46, Kansas City Scottish Rite and Al-Kaly Shrine. He was also active in the First United Methodist Church, the Emmaus Community and the Amateur Radio Club.
Mr. Flagg was a real estate broker and worked for Preferred Properties in Bayfield.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, James R. of Aurora, Charles E. of Ignacio; a daughter Carolyn Meurer of St. Charles, Mo., a sister, Doris Roepke of Bend, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Flagg was buried in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 29. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
Joe Alcario Enriquez
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Joe Alcario Enriquez, who died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, in Center, Colo. He was 82.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.
Mr. Enriquez was born Oct. 3, 1918, in Tiffany, Colo. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Enriquez retired from the logging industry where he drove logging trucks.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ida Enriquez; three daughters, Ruby Carrillo and Alyce Erwin, both of Durango, and Sally Granados of Center, Colo.; three sisters, Vivian Doyle of Denver, Mary Rocha of Brighton, Colo., and Della Chapin of Bayfield; four brothers, Phillip Enriquez of Ignacio, Ned Enriquez of Farmington, N.M., Joe P. Enriquez of Denver and Frank Enriquez of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harvey Otis Young
A celebration of life and a potluck dinner will be at noon Saturday at the Dolores Community Center for Harvey Otis Young, a lifelong rancher, who died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in Durango. He was 87.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr. Young was born Feb. 25, 1914, in Colorado Springs. He moved to Durango in September from Mancos. He was married to Beverly Murphy Young for 48 years.
Mr. Young graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a degree in mechanical engineering. He did graduate work at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and served in the Army Air Corps, both in the states and overseas. He ranched in Dry Creek Basin, Disappointment Valley and Summit Ridge. He was a long-time member of the Farm Bureau and was honored with state awards for his service. He also served on several executive boards.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly of Durango; four children, Beverly Baril of Roanoke, Va.; Max Witkind of Tucson, Ariz.; Jane Morehart of Durango; and Clemence Overholt of Phoenix, Ariz.; three granddaughters, Jeffe Morehart, Jamie Morehart and Jeremie Morehart of Durango; and four grandsons, Travis Witkind and Ilan Baril of Denver, David Baril of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Thomas Overholt of Tempe, Ariz.

Drew O. Verheyden
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. March 15 at First United Methodist Church for Drew O. Verheyden, a Purple Heart recipient during his 31 years with the Army, who died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001. He was 81.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas, with interment at Memorial Hill Cemetery. The cause of death was unknown.
Mr. Verheyden was born April 19, 1919, in Waxahachie, Texas, before moving to Durango in 1992. He married Lillian Brandt in March of 1942.
Mr. Verheyden was a mechanical engineer at the University of Texas when he was drafted into the Army at the beginning of World War II. After spending time in England, France, Belgium and Germany, he owned a cleaning and pressing shop with his wife in Austin, Texas. He then served a 13-month tour in Korea in the 1950s. He was in the Army for 31 years, where he received numerous decorations, and retired in 1972. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing and working in his garden.
He is survived by his brother, Floyd Verheyden, of Jacksonville, Texas; a son, Gregory Verheyden, of Durango; a daughter-in-law, Debby Verheyden, of Durango; and two grandsons, Alan Verheyden, of Durango, and Michael Rice, of Houston.
Mr. Verheyden was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the First United Methodist Church of Durango Scholarship Fund in memory of Drew Ollie Verheyden, 2917 Aspen Drive, Durango, CO 81301.
Faustina L. Tucson
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Victorious Life Fellowship for Faustina L. Tucson, a longtime resident of Durango, who died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001. She was 77.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary. Pastor Raymond Mestas will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The cause of death was unknown.
Mrs. Tucson was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Los Pinos, N.M. She was the daughter of Juan and Marcelita Lucero. She married Carlos H. Tucson on Dec. 22, 1942, in La Canada Bonita, N.M.
Mrs. Tucson was an active member of the Spanish Assembly of God for many years. She was a homemaker who also worked at Fort Lewis College, Community Hospital and businesses in Durango. She also volunteered at Manna Soup Kitchen.
Mrs. Tucson enjoyed crocheting, gospel music and working in her garden. She was well-known for her tamales.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by two sons, Carlos Tucson Jr. and Arthur Tucson, both of Durango; five daughters, Ester Natonabah of Kirtland, N.M., Naomi Martin of Crown Point, N.M., Phyllis Dial of Duncanville, Texas, and Carrol Shaver and Loretta Mestas of Durango; three stepchildren, Gilbert Tucson, Virginia Ruybal and Susan Manzanares, all of Ignacio; a brother, Julian Lucero of Pueblo; a first cousin, Rose Herrera of Pueblo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Marlene Heizer
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Marlene Heizer, a lifelong Durango resident, who died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. She was 54.
The Rev. Gary MacDonald and Bob Kujath will officiate at services. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.
Miss Heizer was born Aug. 7, 1946, in Durango. She was associated with the Four Corners Sheltered Workshop for a number of years, and has organized annual reunions for the workshop the past seven years. She was involved in many aspects of Special Olympics. In the early 1980s she received the Colorado State HAC/ARC Citizen of the Year Award for her accomplishments and advancements as a special-needs person. She was the dining room hostess at Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers the past seven years. Miss Heizer was an avid fan for 35 years of the Aztec Speedway, where she was recognized with a lifetime fan award. She enjoyed bowling, music, hot air balloons, family trips to Lake Tahoe and Harley Davidson motorcycles.
She is survived by her parents, Wallace R. "Bubs" and Clara Heizer of Durango; a sister, Becky Heizer of Durango; a brother, Wallace E. Heizer of Durango; two nieces, Heather and Hayley Heizer; a nephew, Justin Heizer; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marlene Heizer Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Drawer L, Durango, CO 81302. Funds will be used to finish construction of a park near her home.
Lola Vere Owen
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hood Mortuary Chapel for Lola Vere Owen, an avid quilter, who died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, at her home in Durango from heart failure. She was 77.
Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory.
Mrs. Owen was born July 1, 1923, in Wall, S.D. She moved to Durango in 1972 from California. She married Thomas C. Owen.
Mrs. Owen enjoyed many crafts. She sang with the Sweet Adeline’s for several years. She was a draftsperson and worked with Ernst Engineering. She also operated the Pony Express for a short period of time in the early 1980s.
She is survived by a son, Donald Woolery of Rockford, Ill.; daughter-in-law Sharon Woolery of Rockford; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Owen, in 1981; and by a son, Clifford Woolery, in 1973.
