Edna Patterson
Edna Patterson, former resident of Cortez, passed away Nov. 2, 2000, at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, Calif. She was 78.
A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 10, at the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Yuba City, Calif. Cremation is planned, with interment to be in the Cortez Cemetery.
Survivors include 10 children: Floyd Patterson and family of Cortez; Priscilla Estas, Ellen Pratt, Gloria Lawrence, Jim Patterson, Ronnie Patterson, Melanie Phillips, Alma Rue, Carol Johnson, all of California, and Sue Little of Fairfield, Texas; sister, Helen Jackson of California; 24 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
Edna Patterson was preceded in death by her parents, O.R. (Oscar) and Alma Adams Hipp; husband, Floyd Patterson Sr.; brother William Hipp, and son, Randy Patterson.
Lorie Kay Sellers
Lorie Kay Sellers of Cortez passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, in Durango after a battle with cancer. She was 40.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Church of Christ north of Cortez on Highway 666. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery
in Mancos.
Mrs. Sellers was born July 21, 1960, in Boulder, Colo. She married J.R. Sellers on Feb. 14, 1980, in Bayfield, Colo.
Mrs. Sellers was a mother and wife who was devoted to her family. She was a veterinary technician for several years.
She is survived by her husband, J.R., and daughters, Kate-lyn and Julia Sellers of Cortez; parents, Harvey and Mary Green of Durango; sister, Mary Ann (Doy) Graf of Mancos; brother John (Pam) Green of Aztec N.M.; father-in-law, Harry (Christine) Sellers of Aztec; mother-in-law, Marlene (Harley) Yeager of Cortez, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Green.

James Buford Keith
James Buford Keith, a resident of rural Mancos, passed away Nov. 3, 2000, at his residence. He was 88.
Mr. Keith was born April 22, 1912, in Van Alstyne, Texas. He graduated from high school in Van Alstyne and two years of trade school in Chicago, Ill.
Some of his favorite enjoyments in life were gardening, hunting, fishing and family get-togethers. Mr. Keith was in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrle Maxwell Keith, in 1977. They were blessed with one son, Raymond Keith, of rural Mancos. In addition, James Buford Keith is survived by three grandchildren, James P. Keith of La Luz, N.M.; Kevin R. Keith of Stillwater, Okla.; and Jency E. Gadd of Charmichel, Calif.; sisters, Ruth L. Schwarz of Corsicana, Texas; Juanita Smith of Anna, Texas; and Juan Keith of Anna, Texas; three nieces, Marilyn Keith Black of Grants, N.M.; Karen Meriwether of Richardson, Texas; and Pat Barlow of Beaumont, Texas.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be set for a later date.
Alma Duran
Alma Duran, 85, passed away Oct. 22, 2000 in Tulsa, Okla. Memorial services are to be arranged at a later date.
She was born March 4, 1915, in Millerville, Mo., to Russell and Maud Leslie. Alma had lived in Sandsprings, Okla. for the past six years, and previously, in Colorado, where she resided for the majority of her life.
She is survived by her twin sister, Olga James; son, Dillard Duran, both of Cortez; daughter, Marlene Duran, and twin grandsons, Ted and Tim Arellano, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Dana Gollihue of Brighton, Colo, and Vivian Duran of Grand Junction, Colo.; son, Eddie Duran of Denver; granddaughters, Teri Meadows, who shared in her life in Sandsprings; Peggy Gollihue of Grayson, Ky., and Dalena Duran of Lansing, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, two of whom, Gavin Duran and Ayana Meadows, also shared in her life in Sandsprings. Special people who also loved and shared her life in Sandsprings are George and Johnny Meadows.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Edward C. Duran; sons Sidney and Dwayne Duran; daughter, Nonnis Duran; both parents; two brothers and a sister.
"Mom" and "Grandma" will be dearly missed.
Maude M. Hicks
Memorial services for Maude M. Hicks, a longtime resident of Cortez, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 10, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will be officiating.
Maude was born to Clifford Charles and Adell Alice (Mogg) Alexander on Aug. 10, 1919, in Lookeba, Okla. She passed away Nov. 4, 2000, at Southwest Memorial in Cortez at the age of 81.
Maude and her sweetheart, Cleo Hicks, were wed on March 6, 1935, in El Reno, Okla., and celebrated over 65 years of marriage. She was a dog-breeder in Cortez but had a love for all animals.
She is survived by her two children, LaVonn Millard and her husband Dudley of Cortez, and Melvin Hicks and his wife Maribeth of Cortez. She is also survived by three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, and both of her sisters, Mildred Millard and Verla Crum.

Betty Schutt
Betty Schutt of Cortez passed away Monday, Oct. 23, 2000 at University Medical Center in Denver. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church. A reception will follow the service.
She was born Betty Jean Diers on June 14, 1928, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Viola Grupe Diers Henning and Harold Diers.
She married Donald Schutt on Jan. 24, 1948, and they moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1954. She was employed by Reynolds Aluminum and later by Maricopa County Public School in Arizona. She and Donald built their retirement home in Cortez in the early 1980s. Betty was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was actively involved in the Cortez Christian Women’s Club.
She is survived by her children, Mark (Vicki) Schutt of Phoenix; Mary (John) Gleeson of Littleton, Colo. and Kathy (Paul) Turner, also of Littleton.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, William and Bradley Gleeson, Katie Turner and Jenny Schutt; her sister, Patricia Runstrom of Ladysmith, Wis.; brother, Harold Diers of Tucson; stepsisters Doris Wagner of Sheboygan; Shirley Van Ess of Waldo, Wis.; aunts Eleanore Oehmke of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dorothy Wick and Lucille Peterman of Sheboygan; uncle Raymond Grupe of California; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; son Thomas Schutt; grandsons Alexander Gleeson;s stepfather, Frank Henning; stepsister Betty Jane (Henning) Wisman and step brother, Milton Henning. Her husband of 49 years, Donald Schutt, passed away Nov. 27, 1997.

Alice Crapo Conn
Graveside services for Alice Crapo Conn, a former longtime Dove Creek resident, will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Peel Cemetery
beginning at 1 p.m. Mrs. Conn passed away in Lakewood, Colo., on Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the age of 91.
She was born in Coalbed, Colo. on May 28,1909, the daughter of George W. and Harriett (Crapo) Snyder. Her husband, William Homer Conn, preceded her in death.
Alice was a homemaker and mother to her three children who survive her, Barbara Hancock of Dove Creek; Bud Conn and his wife Pat of Golden, Colo.; and Pat Buffington and her husband Ray of Grand Junction, Colo. She is also survived by her two sisters, Effie Dunning of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lola Longenbaugh of Cortez. Surviving their grandmother are 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, and a son-in-law, Wilbert Hancock.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Dove Creek VFW Ambulance Fund.

Thomas Lloyd Jackson
Funeral services for Thomas Lloyd Jackson, a lifelong resident of Dove Creek, are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3, at the First Baptist Church of Dove Creek beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor Don Daniels will officiate. Interment will follow at the Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Ertel Memorial Chapel on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Thomas was born to Lawrence and Eulah (Briggs) Jackson on Oct. 2, 1914 in Paris, Texas. He went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home. He was 86 years old.
Thomas served his community as a rancher and farmer. He was married on July 2, 1939 to his bride, Overa Mary Ragsdale. To this union three children were born. Thomas loved the outdoors and especially loved to hunt. He also spent some time working for the Civilian Conservation Corp Camps in Mesa Verde during the Depression. Thomas was a former member of the Cortez Elks Lodge and a member of the Dove Creek First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Overa Mary Jackson, and by his children, Verdell Jackson and his wife, Linda of Kalispell, Mont., Gary L. Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., and Vera Deann Knuckles and her husband, Loyd of Dove Creek, Colo. His grandchildren, Bryan Jackson of Longmont, Colo., Scott Loyd Knuckles of Dove Creek, Colo., Shawn Dustin Jackson of Berthoud, Colo., April Marie DeZell of Calispell, Mont., Shelly Ann Purkat of Aztec, N.M., and four other great grandchildren survive Mr. Jackson. He is survived by extended family, Viola Martin of Dove Creek, Colo., Imogene Utley of Cortez, Colo., Hubert Jackson, of Salinas, Calif., Ira Lee Jackson of Weiser, Ida., Truman Jackson of Sparks, Nev., and George Jackson of Yuma, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

Harold Bateman
Funeral services for former Cortez resident Harold Bateman, 78, of Chickasha, Okla., will be held Friday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parkview Christian Church, with Rev. David Woods officiating.
Harold Bateman was born April 4, 1922 in Drumright, Okla., to Mark Bateman and Martha Humphreys. He passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000 in Chickasha.
Harold grew up in Garber, Okla. He graduated from the high school there before going into the US Army for two years. He and Juanita Kilpatrick were married in 1945, in Seminole, Okla.
He started working in the Oklahoma oil fields in 1947. Later, in 1956, he was transferred to Cortez, where he continued to work for an additional 23 years. He returned to Chickasha in 1980, and retired in 1985.
Harold loved baseball, basketball, football and golf. He was a great youth baseball coach for about 15 years while in Cortez.
Harold is survived by his wife, Juanita; two daughters, Karen Sue Bateman of Denver and Janet Lee Rakowitz of San Antonio, Texas; sons Kerry Lynn Bateman of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Alan Neal Bateman of Grand Junction, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by both parents, one brother and three sisters.
Internment will be in the Covington Cemetery
in Covington, Okla. at 2 p.m. under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home (405-224-1344).
Nelma Finley
Funeral services for Nelma Finley, a longtime Cortez resident, are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will be officiating the services. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Nelma was born to Charles and Nora (Coles) Holding on Aug. 27, 1914 in Paris, Texas. She passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. Nelma was 86 years old.
Nelma married Forrest Aulton Finley on January 25, 1938 in Paris, Texas. They were married for over 53 years until Forrest passed away in 1981.
Nelma was a faithful member of the Cortez Church of Christ. She was a constant student always endeavoring to learn more. She enjoyed the old-time tent revivals, sewing, canning, gardening, and all of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Jim A. Finley and his wife, Lolita of Cortez, and Rick C. Finley and his wife, Theresa of Pleasant View; brother, E.V. "Jim" Holding of San Bernadino, Calif.; and her sister, Sadie Christian of Pasadena, Texas. John and Denise Thomas of Cortez; Quint and Angeline Taggart of Cortez; Tommy and Jami Dennison of Tucson, Ariz.; Jeremy and Gretchen Finley of Bay Point, Calif.; Kristen Finley of Grand Junction, Colo., and two great-grandchildren all survive their grandmother.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Freelin Martin Portner
Freelin Martin Portner was born May 15, 1903, to William and Olga Lackmann Portner, in Deadwood, S.D., where his father was one of the early miners to work in the world-renowned Homestake Gold Mine. He passed away Oct. 27 in Durango, at the age of 97.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall, 2537 County Road 203, Durango. Steven Geiger will officiate.
He is survived by one son, four daughters and spouses, 22 grandchildren and two generations of great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Arline Portner, two brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; one grandson; one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.
