Isabell "Mable" White

Funeral services for Isabell "Mable" White, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Friday, Dec. 29, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Sylvan Cemetery. Officiating will be Father Tom Munson.

Mable was born in Cortez on Dec. 9, 1932, the daughter of Manuel and Rebecca (Gomez) Miera. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000. She was 68.

A graduate of Montezuma-Cortez High School, Mable wed Donald Harrison White on Aug. 8, 1955, in Aztec, N.M. For 45 years they worked side by side, raising a family and making a living on their farm. Their marriage was a partnership based on love, respect and friendship. Mable took pleasure in her gardens and baking for her family. Most especially though, Mable was very involved in her grandchildren's activities, primarily softball.

A loving family survives Mable, including her husband, Don, of Pleasant View; her father, Manuel Miera of Kirtland, N.M.; a son, Robert Adams of Kirtland, N.M.; and two daughters, Roxie Rupe and her husband, Trent, of Clifton, Colo., and Debbie White of Pleasant View. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Terra White of Pleasant View, Leann Rupe of Clifton, Don Davis of Pleasant View, Scott Rupe and Katie Rupe, both of Clifton, as well as her sister and her husband, Louanna and Jesse Worrell of Cortez.

Her sister, Helen Cordova, and her mother preceded her in death.

Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Helen Popp

Helen Popp of Cortez passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 21, 2000, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home. She was 84.

A memorial service is planned for a later date at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cortez.

Mrs. Popp was born to Joseph and Weronica Olteann Francu on March 2, 1916, in Detroit, Mich.

She was married to Nicholas Popp on Sept. 25, 1938, in Chicago, Ill. He preceded her in death.

Helen was employed by the Motorola Company and the Kimball Piano company as a wood-finisher.

She is survived by her sons, Brian Popp of Cortez and Bruce Popp of Simi Valley, Calif., and a daughter, Diane Cook of Fort Worth, Texas.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale & Gerken Funeral Directors are serving the family.

Joy W. Jeter

Memorial services for Joy Wanda Jeter will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Marvin Graves will officiate.

Joy was born on Oct. 10, 1918, to Silas Edmund and Lena Edna (Dobbins) Jeter in McElmo, Colo. She passed away at her home in McElmo on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the age of 82.

Joy never married but had a very full life serving her country. She was a supply sergeant in the Air Force for 23 1/2 years. Joy enjoyed the outdoors. She often would spend her leave with her nephews or nieces and explore the beautiful United States. She was a rock climber and loved to camp.

She is survived by her brother, Dale Jeter, and his wife Annette of McElmo, and nephews Tommy Jeter, Ed Jeter, and Darryl Ray Jeter all of Cortez, and by niece Barbara Jeter of Yellow Jacket. She leaves behind 15 great-nieces and nephews.

Also surviving Joy are her cousins: Orin and Karen Pilcher, Bob and Verna Mae Whitmore, and George and Jean Chesney. There are numerous extended family members that will grieve her loss.

Services are under the direction of Ertel Funeral Home.

Carol Ann Smith

Memorial services for Carol Ann Smith of Cortez are scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Cortez at 1 p.m. Pastor Brad Ramsey will officiate.

Carol was born to Hubert and Dorothy (Knight) Sanders on Dec. 29, 1946, in Dallas, Texas. She passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez on Sunday, Dec. 17, at the age of 53.

Carol taught for many years as a kindergarten teacher. She was an accomplished educator, having graduated from Sam Houston High School, and having received a B.A. from Pacific Lutheran College, a B.A. from Texas Wesleyan College, and an M.A. in early childhood development from the Northern Arizona University. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Society for 31 years. Carol loved to create and was an excellent seamstress, making cloth dolls.

Carol was wed to Dale William Smith on Jan. 31, 1969, in Fort Worth, Texas. Dale survives his beloved spouse. From this union were born two sons who survive: Kyle Fredrick Smith and his wife, Brandi, of Forth Worth, and Kent Tyson Smith and his wife, Monika, of Killeen, Texas. Also surviving are her three grandchildren: Kayla, Kara, and Jacob Smith. She is survived by both of her parents, and her brother, Stephen Harrison Sanders and his wife, Susie of Mililani, Hawaii.

Memorial contributions can be made in Carol Smith's name with the American Cancer Society of Cortez. Arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Frank Daniels

Frank Daniels, a 25-year resident of Cortez, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez on Dec. 16, 2000, at the age of 66. He was born to Andrew and Lula (McClurg) Daniels on Sept. 15, 1934, in Lawrence City, Ohio.

Frank worked for the Superior Oil Company as an oil-field worker.

Frank is survived by his wife, Lenore (Niemeyer) Daniels of Cortez, and three children, Helen, Todd, and Steven. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.

No services are planned

Clifton Samuel Combee

Services for Clifton Samuel Combee, a Dolores resident since 1951, will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Cortez Four corners Funeral Chapel. Mr. Richard Rogers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Summit Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Combee passed away Dec. 15, 2000, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 76.

He was born Nov. 8, 1924, to Samuel J. and Zenobia Hiser Combee in Catron County, N.M. He attended school in New Mexico.

On March 5, 1948, he married Rose McCormack in Kingman, Ariz.. They were blessed with four children. Rose passed away in February, 1988.

On April 13, 1992, Clifton married June Jensen in Durango. She passed away on Oct. 21, 2000.

Clifton Combee is survived by sons, Wayne (Sandie) Emmett of Los Angeles, Calif., and Charles Combee of Johnston, Atoll; daughters, Carol Rogers of Belle Plaine, Kans. and Sandra (Richard) Bryan of Dolores; sisters Ellen (Robert) Harmon of Cahone and Orwen (Ralph) Damron of Thather, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Fern Hensley

Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Fern Elizabeth Hensley will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Cortez Church of Christ beginning at 2 p.m. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt will officiate. Burial will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.

Fern passed away at her home in Cortez on Dec, 13, 2000, at the age of 81. She was born in Springfield, Colo., on Dec. 8, 1919, to Oscar and Lenora Ethel (Clayton) Branson.

On Feb. 19, 1936, Fern became the bride of Edward Walter "Doc" Hensley in Cortez. From this union were born Norman, Dora, Mack, and Dennis. Doc passed away Dec. 27, 1983.

Fern was a devoted member of the Cortez Church of Christ. She loved to garden.

Surviving Fern are her children and their spouses, Norman and Mary Hensley of Dove Creek, Dora and Jim White of Los Luz, N.M., Mack and Joyce Hensley of St. Marys, Idaho., and Dennis and Colleen Hensley of Mancos; and 12 grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Reed Branson and his wife, Margie of Dolores, Harold Branson and his wife Eloise of Seneca, Mo., and Ray Branson and his wife, Georgie, of West Plains, Mo.; and two sisters, Eva Lisenbury and her husband, Rueben of Dolores, and Margaret Fiksdel of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ervin, Vernon and Robert Branson, and one sister, Ruth Darland.

Margaret L. Baze

Graveside services for Margaret L. Baze will be held Saturday, Dec. 16, 2 p.m. in Egnar, at the Peel Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow at the Dove Creek Community Center.

Mrs. Baze passed away on Nov. 23, 2000 in Riverside, Calif., at the age of 92. She was born on Jan. 4, 1908, to Guy and Opie Pruner Harrison in Cortez.

She married Lloyd Baze on Feb. 14, 1933, in Glendale, Calif. She was a homemaker and piano teacher in both California and Dove Creek, where she and Lloyd moved in 1942.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Marie Nash; three grandchildren, Jeanne Nash, Jacque Ragsdale and Guy Nash, and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd and brothers, Charles and Lynn Harrison.

Judy Lee Reader

Memorial services for Judy Lee Reader, a resident of Mancos, are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Mancos First Baptist Church beginning at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Paul K. Wilson will be officiating.

Judy was born on June 3, 1943 in Parkridge, Ill., the daughter of William A. and Lu (Fleissner) Anderson. She passed away at her home on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000 at the age of 57.

Judy loved gardening, yard work and bird watching. She was an avid antique collector.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry James Reader, to whom she was wed on Aug. 25, 1990 in Estancia, N.M. She is also survived by her mother, Lu Tyson of Albuquerque, N.M.; her children; Lee Austin of Mancos, and Paul Dugas and his wife Maria of Louisiana; her brother, Corky Anderson of Placitas, N.M. and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father.

Arrangements are being handled by the Ertel Funeral Home.

Jack Lee Sr.

Funeral services for Jack Lee Sr. are scheduled for Tuesday, December 12, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the family cemetery at Mancos Creek, N.M.

Jack Lee Sr. was born on April 15, 1924 to Hosteen Begay and Lizzy (Willie) Begay. He was born at Mancos Creek on the New Mexico and Colorado state line. He passed away on Friday, December 8, 2000 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. He was 76 years old.

Jack worked for many years as a miner in the uranium industry. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Benally) Lee; and his children, David Johnson Lee of Waterflow, N.M., Jackson J. Lee Sr. of Albuquerque, N.M., Jack Lee Jr. of Cortez, Colo., Emma Begay of Shiprock, N.M., Davis David Lee of Topeka, Kan., Paul H. Lee of Cortez, Colo., and Vickie J. Lee of Cortez. He has left behind 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Jack is his brother, John Willie Sr. of Mancos, Colo.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; son, Gerald J. Lee; granddaughter, Yolanda Lee; grandson, Artemas Lee; brother, Willie Begay; and a sister, Mary Lee.

Funeral services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.

Caroline Roelfs Merrill

Funeral services for Caroline Roelfs Merrill, a lifelong Cortez resident, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the First Baptist Church of Cortez beginning at 2 p.m. Pastor David Donnelly will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Lebanon Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Ertel Memorial Chapel Tuesday afternoon between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Caroline was born to Edward and Emma Jo (Bradford) Roelfs on August 6, 1933 in Cortez. She passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000 at the age of 67.

Caroline was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cortez. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Federal Reserve Bank. Caroline and her beloved husband, David L. Merrill, were wed on Dec. 16, 1960 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Surviving Caroline is her husband, David; her two brothers, Edward Roelfs and his wife, Jo of Cortez; John Roelfs and his wife, Dorothy of Portland, Ore.; and her sister, Louise Roelfs of Washington.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Caroline Merrill to the Montezuma County Hospice. Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
