Robert Francis Janz
Robert Francis Janz of Mancos died at Scripps Memorial Hospital, San Diego, Calif., on Dec. 29, 2000. He was 66.
Mr. Janz was born Oct. 27, 1934, in Dancy, Wisc., to Paul and Florence Miller Janz.
Mr. Janz was educated in Dancy and Mosinee, Wisc., schools. From 1951 to 1956 he served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Janz was married to Patricia Murphy on Oct. 5, 1957, in Kenosha, Wisc. For 20 years he was employed by ARA in Kenosha. He had been a resident of Colorado since 1979.
Mr. Janz is survived by his wife, Pat Janz, of Mancos; a son, Donald Robert Janz, Mancos; daughter-in-law Melissa and three grandchildren, Courtney Dawn, Shelby Jean and Dalton Robert Janz, all of Mancos. In addition, he is survived by brothers Henry, Carl and James Janz, and sisters Marion Weyer and Ione Levy, and many beloved nieces nephews and a host of friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Hood Mortuary in Durango from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Services will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Mancos. A private burial will follow the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Mancos Valley Youth Activities Fund at First National Bank in Mancos.
Madison Elaine Podgornoff
Madison Elaine Podgornoff was born on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, to Matthew and Paula (Daves) Podgornoff in Durango, Colo. Madison died the same day of her birth at the Mercy Medical Center in Durango.
Family and friends grieve the loss of Madison with her parents. Surviving her are both parents; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Daves of Arriola, Colo., Wayne and Karry Snider of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Ed Podgornoff of Schertz, Texas. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles grieve the loss of this precious little family member.
Thee will be a service for Madison on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at the Arriola Bible Church beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Kent Slyter wll be officiating the service. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Lucas A. Jaramillo
Lucas A. Jaramillo, 11, of Bloomfield, N.M., went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Dec. 25, 2000. He was born Nov. 16, 1989, in Farmington, N.M.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry T. and Evelyn Cordova of Bloomfield; brothers J.T. Cordova of Phoenix;, and Jesse Ray Cordova of Bloomfield; sister Sylvia Jaramillo; grandparents Arsenio and Rufina Jaramillo, all of Bloomfield; Jerry and Dee Cordova of Cortez, and Dan and Margie Cummins of Bloomfield.
A rosary will be recited Monday, Jan. 1, 2001 at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Chapel at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 2, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Bloomfield. Pastor George Ford will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Jaramillo, Dale McDaniel, Kevin Cordova, Gill Valdez, Louis Valdez and David Fredericks.

Dominick "Nick" J. Quercia
Dominick "Nick" J. Quercia was born on Sept. 3, 1918, to Frank and Angela Quercia in New York. He passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. He was 82.
Nick worked for the Teamsters Union as a driver. He loved to sing and was an avid fan of Phoenix Roadrunner Hockey.
He was wed to Rose F. Devito Quercia in New York in 1945. Rose has preceded him in death.
Surviving are his children, Tom Quercia of Phoenix, Ariz., Bob Quercia of Prescott, Ariz. and Mancos, Colo., and Jim Quercia. Also surviving is his sister, Ann Hecker of Maryland.
Memorial services will be held in Phoenix and are currently pending.
Antonia Eve Torres
Graveside services for Antonia Eve Torres, infant daughter of Robert and Troylene Torres of Durango, will be held at the Arriola Cemetery
at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2000. Antonia passed away on Dec. 25, 2000.
Besides her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Robby and Ricky Torres, Durango; grandparents Richard and Donna Bowling, Cortez; Cordy Atencio, Durango, and Reyes Torres Sr., Denver; great-grandmothers Marie Sharp of Arriola and Frances Grim of Denver, as well as aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Gaylyne Vicke Laner
Gaylyne Vickie Laner, a resident of Sedro-Wooley, Wash., and a former resident of Towaoc, passed away Dec. 25, 2000 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident south of Cortez. She was 43.
Funeral services are set for Saturday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m. in the Recreation Center at Towaoc, Colo.. Internment will follow in the Towaoc Cemetery.
Gaylyne Vickie Laner was born on Feb. 3, 1957 in Cortez, Colo. to John and Sarah Posey.
Gaylyne Vickie Laner is survived by her sons Cassius and Truman Hatch of Sedro-Wooley, Wash.; daughter Heather Hatch of Towaoc; sisters Yvonne Lansing, Cynthia Keelick, Melody Fields, and Beverly Morgan, all of Towaoc, and Rayanne Fields of Sedro-Wooley, Wash., Wahlella Begay of White Mesa, Utah, Emily Rose Laner, Joanna Laner, Nola Laner Price, Sandy Laner, Lori Laner, Clarissa Laner, Annabell Laner.
She is also survived by brothers Paul Fields, Johnny Laner, Byron Laner, Phillip Laner, Sr., Franklin Laner, and Rutherford Mills, Sr. of Towaoc, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two nephews, Delvin Starr and Martel Price, and two brothers, Ray Laner and Eugene Laner. A granddaughter, Rakiyah Lang, passed away as a result of the same traffic accident.
Rakiyah Lang
Rakiyah Sarah Lang, a resident of Towaoc, passed away Dec. 27, 2000. She was eight months old.
Funeral services are set for Saturday, Dec. 30, at 10:00 a.m. at the Recreation Center in Towaoc. Internment will follow in the Towaoc Cemetery.
Rakiyah Sarah Lang was born on April 6, 2000 in Mount Vernon, Wash., to Heather hatch and Travis Lang.
She is survived by her parents, Heather Hatch and Travis Lang, both of Towaoc; grandmas Arlene Black Melody Fields, and Cynthia Keelick, all of Towaoc; great-grandmas Ruth Black of Blanding, Utah; great-great-grandma Mary Grey of Blanding, Utah; two grandpas, Paul Fields and Rodney Hatch, both of Towaoc; one aunt, Miracle Hatch of Towaoc; many uncles, Truman Hatch, Cassius Hatch, Anson Fields, Lamar Fields, Fellowhawk Fields, Ulysses Lang, Patrick Lang, Justin Lang, Wilford Lang Jr., Cedric Lang, Waylon Lang, all of Towaoc; and six cousins.
She is preceded in death by her grandma Gaylyne Laner; great-grandma Sarah Posey and Grandpa Wilford Lang Sr.
Billy Eugene Steele
Billy Eugene Steele, 65, of Bloomfield, N.M., died suddenly Dec. 25, 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his mother, Ruby Perschall of Bloomfield, two sons, Steven and wife Lyla, and Terry and wife Jennell, all of Cortez, and daughter Deborah Miller and husband Fred of Bolivar, Missouri, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Jane Wallace of Arlington, Texas.
Billy and his family lived 30 years in Cortez before moving to Bloomfield in 1992.
Billy was a hard-working man who was knowledgeable and respected in the petroleum industry. He loved hunting, fishing and playing golf and liked to walk around in the desert exploring.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at Greenlawn Cemetery
with Jack Wheat officiating. Pallbearers will be David Miller, Jeff Steele, Billy Steele, Joshua Miller, Joseph Miller and Travis Steele. Alternate pallbearer will be Chandler Salazar.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to San Juan Regional Cancer Center, 800 W. Maple, Farmington, N.M. 87401.
Funeral services are with Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington.
Nelda S. Carlson
Memorial services for Nelda S. Carlson, a resident of Cortez, will be held Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 1 p.m.
Nelda, a resident of Vista Mesa Retirement Home since April of this year, passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the age of 89.
She was born near Cortez on Aug. 19, 1911, the daughter of Will and Clara (Walters) Swank.
On Christmas Eve in 1932, Nelda became the bride of Harry William Carlson in Aztec, N.M. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage until Harry's death in January 1997.
Surviving Nelda are her children, Betty Carr of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Jeanette and Dick Daves of Cortez; Loretta and Robert Green of Cortez, and Harry L. (Swede) and Alice Carlson of Mira Loma, Calif.; and 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Preceding her in death was a son, Eddie Carlson; a brother, Bill Swank; and a sister, Bessie Wade.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Beverly Jean Banks Youree
Memorial services for Beverly Jean Banks Youree will be held Friday, Dec. 29, at Northside Church of Christ in Farmington at 2 p.m. with burial to follow at the Cortez Cemetery
on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 10 a.m.
Beverly passed away in Nevada in the loving presence of her chidren, grandchildren and sister on Dec. 20.
Beverly was a manager for 7 to 11 food corporation. She was born to Charles David Banks and Cynthia Oneita Chappell on Sept. 26, 1940, in Florence, Ariz. She is survived by her children, Wade (Kim) Goodall of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Teri (Brian) Onsagard, of Moorhead, Minn.; and Denise (Darrell) Rhodes, of Henderson, Nev., and her grandchildren, Amber and Casey Goodall, Matthew Kyles, Adam and Alex Onsgard, and Dakota and Sierra Rhodes; and one great-grandchild: Tyler Kyles. She is also survived by her sister, Kay Fox.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob Banks.

Fern L. McGee
Graveside services for Fern L. McGee, former longtime Cortez resident, are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Cortez Cemetery
beginning at 11 a.m. Pastor Mike Thornton will officiate.
Mrs. McGee passed away in Grand Junction on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the age of 87. She was born in Lewis, Colo., on May 3, 1913.
She married John H. McGee in Cortez on Feb. 26, 1936. John passed away in October 1966.
Fern was a member of the Cortez American Legion Auxiliary and a Pink Lady, volunteered for many outreach programs, and was a Gold Star Mother.
Fern is survived by her children, Arthur McGee of Grand Junction, Vernalee Huckabay of Roseville, Calif., John R. McGee of Grand Junction, and Richard McGee, also of Grand Junction. Her brother, Albert Lobato, and sister, Lucy Garcia, both of Denver, also survive her.
Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Charles Wayne "Pete" Chandler
Charles Wayne "Pete" Chandler, a property manager in Clifton, passed away Dec. 10, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Junction after a lengthy battle with emphysema and complications. Cremation preceded a memorial service at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction on Dec. 14. The ashes will be buried in Cortez at a later date.
Pete was born May 25, 1944, in Cortez to Earl Herbert Chandler and Sadie Janelle (Mink) Chandler. He attended Cortez schools, graduating from Montezuma High School in 1961. At this time, he joined the Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1965.
Pete later settled in Grand Junction. His interests were antiques and horses, and he later became involved in the Little Britches Rodeo.
His parents, Earl and Sadie Chandler, preceded him in death, as did five brothers: Bill, Chip, Jim, Larry and Fred.
Survivors include one son, Kip Chandler of Montrose; four stepsons, Terry Harlan of Rifle, Gary Harlan of New Castle, Shane Kelly and Jim Kelly, both of Grand Junction; three step-daughters, Dawn Foster of Whitewater, Lisa Tow of Phoenix and Delilah Harlan of Glenwood Springs; 14 step-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward Chandler of Fruita and Albert Chandler of Hesperus, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
