William Eberling

Clarence William Eberling passed away at his home in Cahone on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the age of 71. Funeral services will be held in Lake Havasu City. Memorial services will be held at the Dove Creek First Southern Baptist Church on Monday, July 24, beginning at 7 p.m.

Mr. Eberling was born in Patagonia, Ariz., on Nov. 25, 1928, the son of John C. Eberling and Lenore (Garza) Eberling. An excavation contractor, Clarence was a pioneer of Lake Havasu City. He was a member of the Operator Engineers Association and of AQHA. He enjoyed hunting.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Ilse Eberling of Cahone; three sons, Jack W. Eberling, of Denver, Colo., Bruce D. Eberling of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ron Dale Reynolds of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a daughter, Carol Ann Chase of Clairmont, N.H.; and 14 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers, John Eberling of Williams, Ariz., and Joe Eberling of Douglas, Ariz.; five sisters, Mary Ann Fairchild of Douglas, Ariz., Pauline Price of Buckeye, Ariz., Margaret Ross of Ajo, Ariz., Eva Bowden of Cahone, and Elizabeth Jenkins of Ajo, Ariz., as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Local arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Lee Earl Reddert

Lee Earl Reddert, 80, passed away at his home in rural Dolores, on July 17, 2000. Interment services will be held at St. Paul's Church Cemetery in Sunman, Ind., on Tuesday, July 25, beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Joey Nelson of the Sunman Community Church will officiate.

Lee was born in Ripley County, Ind., on March 8, 1920 to Daniel Reddert and Sophia (Zimmer) Reddert. Lee loved fishing, reading all types of books, and woodworking. He had a deep affection for baseball and was a dedicated fan. Lee was a former Mason. He served his country during World War II in the Army and was a member of the Sunman, Indiana American Legion. Lee was united in marriage to Irene Calhoun on Nov. 5, 1949, in Indianapolis, Ind.

Lee is survived by his loving family; a son Fred Reddert of Pensacola, Fla.; three daughters, Kathleen Reddert of Dolores, Sharon Behunin and her husband, Alan, of Mancos, Colo., and Juanita Reddert of Dolores. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Jennifer Frantz, Daniel Behunin and his wife, Ana, Michael Behunin, and Angela Behunin; three great-grandchildren, Justin and Angel Frantz, and Leif Behunin; a sister and her husband, Helen and Edward Mosmeier of Sunman, Ind.; and a cousin, Lottie Reddert of Mancos.

Memorial contributions can be made in Lee Reddert's name at the Dolores State Bank.

Charles Ward Oglesby

Charles Ward Oglesby, a resident of Durango, passed away Saturday, July 15, in the Four Corners Health Care Center, Durango. He was 61.

Funeral services are set for Wednesday, July 19, at 4 p.m. in the Frontier Baptist Church, 2061 County Road 225, Durango. Pastors Peter Reitz and Jerry Brush will officiate. Interment will follow at the Florida Cemetery.

Mr. Oglesby retired from the U.S. Navy as a teacher in electronics. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, Ill. for six years, and in Florida for three years. He was a member of the Florida Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Charles Ward Oglesby Jr. of Durango; Jeff Oglesby of San Diego, Calif.; daughters Michelle (Bernard) Dunn of Durango; Terri Hantman of London, England; and Denise Oglesby of Chicago, Ill. He is also survived by his sister, Cora (Don) Smith of Chicago and nine grandchildren.

Cortez Four Corners Funeral Chapel, Hale and Gerken Funeral Directors, are serving the family.

John Wesley Sturdevant Sr

Memorial services for John Wesley Sturdevant, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Friday, July 21, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor David Donnelly of the First Baptist Church will officiate.

John was born in Farmington, N.M., on Sept. 10, 1934, to John and Dortha Sturdevant. John passed away at his home in rural Dolores on July 15, 2000. He was 65.

He and Roberta N. Phillips were wed in Holbrook, Ariz., on July 12, 1954. John was an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic, but in his free time he loved working on cars for his grandsons. He also loved horses and mules and fly-fishing in high mountain streams.

Surviving John are his wife of 46 years, Roberta Sturdevant of Dolores; his children and their spouses, Melodie and Steve Lente of Cortez, John Jr. and Stephanie Sturdevant of Longmont, Colo., Miles and Tammy Sturdevant of Cortez, and Teresa and Clark Wilson of Moab, Utah; and eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Charley Miller of Cortez, and Coleen Sturdevant of Texas; and a brother, Bill Turner of Lewis, Colo. also survive John.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of John Sturdevant at the Dolores State Bank.

Jesse Duane "J.D." Higgins

Memorial services for Jesse Duane "J.D." Higgins, 27, of Cortez, will be held Sunday, July 16, at the Higgins family home, 11587 Road 22, beginning at 3 p.m.

J.D., a lifelong resident of Cortez, passed away on July 12, 2000. He was born in Cortez on May 17, 1973 to Kenneth Allen Higgins and Judith Lenore (Raley) Higgins.

Survivors include his parents, Kenneth and Judith Higgins of Cortez; three brothers, David Jacolby Higgins and his wife Michelle Mahan Higgins of Cortez, Orin Denton Higgins of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Jonothan Orton Higgins of Cortez; grandparents, Jack and Una Raley of Meeker, Colo., and Millard and Joylene Higgins of Dolores; great-grandmother, Louise Higgins of Mancos; a niece, Tatianna Marie Mahan Higgins of Cortez; and many cousins, uncles, aunts, and extended family.

Memorial contributions can be made in J.D. Higgins' name at the Community Bank.

Mellie Mae Redfoot

Funeral services for Mellie Mae Redfoot, a lifelong resident of Towaoc, will be held Monday, July 17, at the Towaoc Presbyterian Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery. Visitation has been set for Sunday afternoon at the Ertel Memorial Chapel between the hours of 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. A wake at the family home on Mike Wash Road will be held Sunday evening.

Mellie was born in Towaoc, Colo., on May 15, 1936, the daughter of Julian Hight and Callie May Collins Hight. She passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, July 13, 2000. She was 64 years old.

Surviving Mellie is her husband, Roger Julian Redfoot of Towaoc; her children, Darrell Ketchum Sr., Frankie Ketchum both of Towaoc, William Turtle Sr. of Albuquerque, N.M., Lupe Height, Victor Hight, Delberta Redfoot all of Towaoc, Justina R. Redfoot of Ft. Duchesne, Utah, Anita Thomas of Sacaton, Ariz., and Janet Redfoot of Towaoc; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Roberta Valdez and Ruth Martinez both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and nieces, nephews, and many friends.

A daughter, Julia Redfoot; three sisters, Marie Hight, Lucy Washington, and Janette Hight; and five brothers, Phillip Lopez Sr., Oscar Hight, Clarence Hight Sr., Bob May, and Charlie May Hight preceded Mellie in death.

Esther Marie Cardoza,

Private family services will be held at a later date for Esther Marie Cardoza, 91, of Cortez. Esther passed away at the Vista Grande Nursing Home on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. She was born in Stewartville, Minn., on May 29, 1909 to Wallace Vincent Olin and Eva Adaline (Kingsley) Olin.

In her 20s, Esther sang professionally on stage and on radio. She married Buck Ballard and the couple moved to San Jose, Calif. in this 1950s. Esther and Buck divorced in 1956. In 1959 Esther married Percy Cardoza, a widower with two teenaged children, Joan Cardoza, 13, and Louie Percy Cardoza, 17, and had a ready-made family. Esther, not ever having any children, took them in as her own.

Later, Esther began working in the medical profession and until her retirement, worked for four doctors. She was married to Percy until his death in October, 1983. Esther returned to her beloved Colorado in 1984.

Esther is survived by the daughter and son that she helped raise, Joan Cardoza Dwyer and Louie Percy Cardoza. She is also survived by Viola Ferreri, who was a grown daughter of Percy's when Esther and Percy married. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Esther will be missed by all that knew her, but most of all she will be missed by her daughter and her husband, Patrick, and her granddaughter, Jennifer. We love you Mom and Grandma.

Sally Gann Now Hopkins

Sally Gann Now Hopkins, a resident of the Vista Grande Nursing Home, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the age of 92. Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 16, at the Dolores First Baptist Church beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Sally was born in Stillwell, Okla., on April 9, 1908, the daughter of Joe Gann and Kate (Livers) Gann.

She is survived by her two sons, Herbert Hopkins of Mesquite, Nev., and Sam Hopkins of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Ora Watson of Green River, Wyo., and Eva Heath of Dolores; and two sisters, Joana Christian and Billie Grits, both of Hominy, Okla.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Sam W. Hopkins; a daughter, Imogene Thompson; a son, Henry Hopkins; and a brother, Woodrow Gann.

Matilda "Tillie" Marie Fisher

Matilda "Tillie" Marie Fisher passed away at the Mesa View Retirement Home on Tuesday, July 11, 2000. She was 78 years old at the time of her death.

Tillie was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Bear Creek, Mo., the daughter of Monroe Hunt Phillips and Laura Bell (Mayse) Phillips.

Tillie spent her childhood in Clinton, Mo., attending grade school and graduating from high school there. She was united in marriage to Ernest G. Fisher in Joplin, Mo., on March 13, 1943. Tillie and Ernest had celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary earlier this year. In 1992, Tillie and Ernest made Cortez their home.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Ernest Fisher of Cortez; a daughter and her husband, Linda and James Spreine of San Clemente, Calif.; a son and his wife, Gary E. and Jaclyn Fisher of Dolores; and a sister, Marjorie Cooper of Vancouver, Wash.

Arrangements are being made through the Ertel Funeral Home.

Rev. Roy J. Griebel

Rev. Roy J. Griebel, of Hammel, Ill., passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at San Juan Regional Medical Center, Farmington, N.M. He was 82.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 14, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Hammel. Services will be Saturday, July 15, 10 a.m., at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, with interment to follow in the Immanuel Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Ronald Eslinger will officiate.

Rev. Griebel was born in Mascoutah, Ill. on Feb. 16, 1918, the son of Henry J. and Annie Fires Griebel.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Bremer Griebel of Hammel; daughter, Juanita (Paul) Hunter of Lansing, Mich.; son, Dr. Gerald (Marilyn) Griebel of Dolores; grandchildren Theron Chaplin; Chandra (Todd) Simmons; Peter Griebel; Stephan Griebel; Chandra (Wayne) Harrison; and Colin Travis. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Irene Griebel of Waterloo, Ill.; Ellen Ruth Bremer and Mary Bremer, both of Metropolis, Ill; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry A. Griebel and a sister. Frieda Speichinger.

Arrangements are being handled through Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home, 618-654-2133.
