Capt. Ralph Edward (Ed) Spore
Funeral services for Captain Ralph Edward (Ed) Spore, U.S. Air Force Jag Corps, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at St. Rita's Mission in Mancos beginning at 2 p.m. Interment is to follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Captain Spore was killed in a tragic swimming accident on July 29, 2000, in Mesaiva, Japan. The son of Norman and Helen Spore, Ed was born on July 9, 1966 in Grand Junction, Colo. He graduated from Mancos High School in 1984 and went on to acquire his law degree from Denver University. Captain Spore joined the Air Force in 1995 and was just beginning a successful career practicing law.
His two small children, Courtney Nicole Spore, 5 years old and Wesley Spore, 4 years old of Melbourn, Fla. survive Captain Spore. He is also survived by his parents, Helen Spore of Mancos, Colo. and Norman Spore of Dolores, Colo.; his sister and brother-in-law, Melinda and Jeff Martinez of Mancos, Colo.; and his brother and sister-in-law, Matthew and Dana Spore of Missoula, Montana.; his brother, Shane Spore of Mancos, Colo.; his foster brother, Reggie Jacket; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Captain Ralph Edward Spore was taken from us unexpectedly at the age of 34, and his untimely death has left his family suffering a tremendous loss.
Janet Cheryl Conner
Local services for former Cortez resident Janet Cheryl Conner will be held on Friday, Aug. 4, beginning at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cortez.
Janet Cheryl Keck was born on Nov. 2, 1956 in Nocona, Texas to the late Richard Keck and Betty Weaver Keck. She passed away in Amarillo, Texas on July 28, 2000, at the age of 43.
She married Richard Conner in 1975.
Janet is survived by her husband, Richard L. Conner of Amarillo, Texas; three daughters, Chloe C. Barrios, Brittany S. Conner, and Wendy L. Pace, all of Amarillo; and one son, Richard R. (D. Ray) Conner, of Amarillo.
Also surviving her are her parents, Steve and Betty Exum of Cortez; two sisters, Landis Porter and Brenda O'Brien of Cortez; one brother, Dick Keck of Cortez; as well as five grandchildren and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

John M. Willden and Helen M. Willden
Memorial services for area residents John M. Willden and Helen M. Willden will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Mancos Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.º
Viola Calhoun
Services were held at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Phoenix for Mrs. Viola Calhoun, 93, of Phoenix, who passed away in a hospital there on July 19, 2000.
Her nine children survive her, including Clarence and LaVerne Calhoun and granddaughters; Susie Myers and family; Sarah Miller and family of the Cortez area and Jackie Nelson of Durango.
She is also survived by grandchildren Clancy Calhoun of Aztec, N.M., Jennifer Calhoun Nichols of Tacoma, Wash. and Laurie Calhoun Winemiller of Bellingham, Wash. A total of 15 grandchildren survive Mrs. Calhoun, as do four great-grandchildren. Former daughter-in-law Marjorie Calhoun also survives Mrs. Calhoun.
Victor Andrew Lopez
Funeral services for Victor Andrew Lopez, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Thursday, July 27, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Mr. Lopez passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, July 23, 2000. He was born at Summit Ridge, Colo., on June 20, 1937, the son of Frank Lopez and Juanita Donna (Espinoza) Lopez. At the time of his death he was 63 years old.
Victor was united in marriage to Gloria Priscilla Martinez on June 29, 1961 at Summit Ridge. To this union were born six children, Connie, Eddie, Carol, Debra, Johnny, and Dolores. Victor and Priscilla had recently celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. Victor loved to hunt, fish, and camp, but most importantly, he always helped his friends and neighbors.
A large and loving family is left to mourn Victor's passing. They include his wife, Priscilla of Summit Ridge; his children, Connie Paredes and her husband, Ricardo of Cortez, Carol Christine Lopez of Cortez, Debra Brito and her husband, Carlos of Summit Ridge, Johnny Lopez and his wife, Amy of Cortez, and Dolores Lopez of Summit Ridge; 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, Ashley Lopez. Victor is also survived by five brothers, Tommy Lopez, Frankie Lopez, Geno Lopez, Tony Lopez all of Summit Ridge, and Abe Lopez of Wales, Utah; and his sister, Ida Mott, also of Summit Ridge.
His son, Eddie Lopez, preceded him in death in 1998.

Helen Lewy McKibben
Funeral services for Helen Lewy McKibben, a lifelong resident of this area, will be held Monday, July 24, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Jimmy Kennedy of the First Southern Baptist Church
Mrs. McKibben passed away in Durango, Colo., on Tuesday, July 18, 2000. She was born in rural Montezuma County, Colo., on Aug. 24, 1896, the fourth of seven children of Adam Lewy and Mary Ann (Johnson) Lewy. She was 103 years old at the time of her death.
Helen attended elementary and high school in Cortez. She married Frank McKibben in Cortez on Sept. 15, 1915. Frank and Helen homesteaded on Bug Point in the early years, came back to Cortez and stayed until 1942 at which time they went to southern California where Helen worked in the shipyard at San Pedro as a layout person. In 1945 Helen and Frank returned to Colorado and owned and operated a dry good store in Dove Creek. In 1969 they came to Cortez to retire and renew old acquaintances. Frank passed away on April 15, 1972.
Five daughters survive Helen, Frances Larimore of Littlefield, Ariz., Aileen Hamilton of Golden Shores, Ariz., Marjorie Gore of Cortez, Pat Lorenzine of Riverside, Calif., and Joy McEntire of Durango. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, and great great-grandchildren. A daughter, Jackie Ballard preceded her in death.
Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Edna Arlene Ross
Edna Arlene Ross, a longtime resident of west end Montrose and San Miguel counties, passed away July 20, 2000, in the Valley inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 80 years old.
A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, July 22, at 4 p.m. in the Norwood Cemetery.
Edna was born to Ira and Sarah Ellen Davis Stoddard on June 22, 1920 at Cedar, Colo. She grew up and attended school in Disappointment Valley. She and her family moved to Norwood, where they resided most of her life.
On Nov. 17, 1938, she married Cecil Ross in Telluride. He passed away in November 1986. Edna was a homemaker all her life. She enjoyed the outdoors, helping other people, and especially enjoyed her volunteer work with the senior citizens’ group in Norwood and Nucla. Most of all, Edna enjoyed being with her family.
Edna Arlene Ross is survived by her son Charles (Edith) Ross of Mesquite, Nev.; foster son, Albert (Ann) Blair of Grand Junction, Colo.; daughters Wilma Patton and friend Mike of Cody, Wyo.; Lila (Don) Arnold of Nucla, and Sharon (Charles) Blaisdell of Cortez. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cecil, a son, two grandsons and five half-sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made t o the American Cancer Society.

George Mike Young
Funeral services for George Mike Young, 81, of Mancos, will be held Saturday, July 22, at the Mancos First Baptist Church beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor Paul K. Wilson will officiate.
Mike passed away at Mancos, Colo., on Wednesday, July 19, 2000. He was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Colorado Springs, Colo., son of George B. Young and Lucy (Hayes) Young. He was brought back to their ranch in Dry Creek Basin in San Miguel County at two weeks old, where he was raised and schooled.
After graduating from CSU and majoring in Animal Husbandry, Mike returned to Dry Creek Basin in 1940 to take over the ranch for his ailing father. Mike Young was involved in the area's politics, serving on the school board, San Miguel Water Board, Southwest Water Board, as well as twenty-four years as San Miguel County Commissioner, and 4-H leader in Mancos and Dry Creek Basin. After selling his Dry Creek Basin ranch in 1978, Mike moved to Mancos, where he lived until his death. Mike was a member of the Elks Lodge and he was very involved and proud of his work in the AA program of which he was a 25-year member.
Mike loved working with his horses, riding in the mountains, deer and elk hunting, and taking care of his ranch operation. He loved his work with sheep, cattle, horses, and raising mules. Mike's work was his hobby, pastime and love. When not doing these things, he loved to read and was a very good artist, especially drawing cartoons. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be dearly missed by all.
Mike is survived by his wife, Shirley Young of Mancos; daughters, Carolyn Young of Norwood, and Jacquelyn Franklin of Norwood; sons, Dr. William Young and wife Diana Young of Eugene, Ore., and James Young and wife, Juanita Noth Young of Norwood; stepchildren and their spouses, Trudy and Randy Williams of Mancos, Chris and Cherie Russell of Palisade, Colo., Jimmie and Julie Reneau of Tijeras, N.M., and Chrissy Haines and Robert Taylor of Mancos. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harvey and Bev Young of Mancos; two sisters, Lucinda "Cinny" Sullivan of Redvale, Colo., and Nancy Haller and her husband, Howard of Showlow, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Mike was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Young; son-in-law Jim Franklin, and by Margaret "Babe" (Morris) Young, mother of his children, in 1997.
Memorial contributions can be made in Mike Young's name at the Mancos Valley Bank. Services will be conducted by the Ertel Funeral Home.
Charles "Charlie" Edward Dickerson
Charles "Charlie" Edward Dickerson passed away in his home in the Summit Ridge Community Thursday, July 20, 2000, at the age of 85. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to celebrate Charlie’s life and to share memories between 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, in the Dickerson home at 39533 Road P.5.
Memorial services will be held Friday, July 28, in Brawley, Calif. Charles’ family would appreciate a contribution to the American Heart Association in lieu of floweres.
Charlie was born in Holtville, Calif., Feb. 15, 1915. He lived in Westmorland, Calif., where he owned and operated Dickerson’s Towing with his wife Gene from 1937 until his retirement in 1981. Charlie and Gene have resided on Summit Ridge most of the time since 1982, where he has enjoyed hunting, fishing and become known as bidder Number 1 at many local auctions. Two years ago he converted a snowcat into an off-road recovery vehicle to tow cars from the sand and mud. it was featured in 4-Wheeler magazine. Charlie loved to share his projects and inventions, and always had a knack for figuring out ways to build new mousetraps.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gene; son Steve and daughters Virginia Dickerson and Nancy Dickerson Shaw, daughter-in-law Tonya Dickerson, son-in-law Gary Shaw, brother Howard Dickerson and wife Marion; grandchildren Stephanie Adams and husband Chuck, Sarah Dickerson and Garan Shaw; great-grandchildren Rachel and Steven Adams, and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie will always be remembered as a loving huband, father and good friend.
Cleola Goff
Funeral services for longtime Mancos resident Cleola Maye Goff will be held Saturday, July 22, at the Mancos First Baptist Church beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor Jimmie Burton will officiate.
Cleola was born the daughter of Elmer Walker Dean and Margamia Maye (Cauler) Goff on Sept. 25, 1930, in Big Spring, Texas. She passed away at San Juan Regional Medical Center on Monday, July 17, 2000, at the age of 69.
On Feb. 10, 1947, Cleola became the bride of Charles Oliver Goff in Aztec, N.M. Cleola was a devoted wife and mother, she loved cooking and camping. She was a member of the Mancos First Baptist Church and the John Derrick Halls VFW Post 5231 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving Cleola is her husband of 53 years, Charles Goff of Mancos; and her children, Carol Ann Denton of Mancos, David Edward and Linda Goff of Mancos, Deana Maye and Mike Smith of Mancos, Celia Jon and Steve Boyd, of Mancos, and Edythe Kay and Steve Hurst of Mancos. Two sons Darryl Glenn Goff and Clayton Lloyd Goff preceded her in death in 1975. 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Paul Dean of Crawford, Colo., Geary Dean also of Crawford, Edward Fox of Desert Center, Calif., and Elmer Dean Jr., also survive Cleola.

Floyd John Barnum
Floyd John Barnum passed away at his home in Mancos on July 17, 2000. Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cortez on July 29 at 9:30 a.m.
Floyd was employed by Montgomery Ward in 1956, and retired in 1981, while serving as district manager in Baltimore, Md. He then joined Motel 6 as a vice president, and he and his wife retired to Mancos in 1991.
Floyd was active in the community. He volunteered at the Cortez Welcome Center, was an honorary lifetime member of Cortez Rotary, and was a member of Southwest Hospital board of Directors.
Floyd is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons and their families Scott (Meg) Barnum and grandson, Nicolas of Birmingham, Ala. ; Craig (Debbie) Barnum and granddaughters Jennifer and Melinda of Baltimore; daughter Kristen (Randal) Black and grandchildren Mary Katherine and Nolan Tucker.
