Harold L. Lewis

Harold L. Lewis, 74, died July 21, 2004, in Cañon City, surrounded by family, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Huntington Park, Calif., a son of the late Simon and Viva (Land) Lewis. He moved with his mother and brother to Pueblo, as a young teen in 1942.
After graduating from Central High School in Pueblo, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned his bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, in accounting from Ft. Lewis College in Durango.
July 8, 1955, Mr. Lewis married Lorraine Carlson, the love of his life, in Pueblo. They had two sons, Mark and Michael. They moved to Salida in 1961, and subsequently lived in Denver and Durango and moved to Canon City in 1985.
During his working years he was at various times a commercial banker, Ft. Lewis College financial aid director, corporation controller, county administrator in Chaffee and later, Fremont counties; Cañon City Finance Director and retired in 1996 as special projects coordinator for Cañon City.
He was a member of the Episcopal church, senior warden, treasurer, and vestry member at various time in four separate parishes in cities where he lived. At the time of his death he was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Cañon City.
Mr. Lewis was active in many civic affairs and organizations, particularly while in Salida.
Cancer and arthritis curtailed his recreational and civic activities in his later life.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Mark Lewis of Cañon City and Michael (Tina) Lewis, of Greeley; his brother, Warren (Ginny) Lewis of Salida; five grandchildren, Mallorie, Whitney and Taylor Lewis of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Brandon and Carli Lewis of Greeley; two nieces and three nephews.
The family thanks all who assisted in his care at the following facilities: St. Thomas More Hospital, Colorado University Medical Center of Denver, and Sangre de Cristo Hospice of Fremont County.
The care he received at each of these facilities was always exceptional and greatly appreciated.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., July 31, 2004, with Fr. Mark Meyer officiating at Christ Episcopal Church, 802 Harrison, Cañon City.
Contributions may be made to the Building and Memorial Fund, Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 28, Cañon City, CO 81215-0028.
Cremation and services handled through Holt Family Funeral Home.

Ed Moore

Ed Moore, 51, died July 26, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Moore was born May 20, 1953, in Colorado Springs, to William and Irene (Shirkey) Moore.
He loved his family and friends, Jeeping, and the mountains. He was preceded in death by his father, William, Nov. 25,1970.
He is survived by his mother, Irene Hanisch, Simla; brothers Donnie (Vickie), Simla and Ronnie (Carolyn), Calhan; nieces and nephews Tylor, Monte, Camie, Amanda and Kindra (Nick).
Other survivors are his significant other, Debbie Mazza of Salida and her children, Tom (Jenifer) Berry, Salida and their child, Ezra Berry; De De (Troy) Cagle and their children, Angelina and McKenzie.
Mr. Moore is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. July 31, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Simla. Please omit flowers.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Alan Carl Vieth

Alan Carl Vieth, 66, the son of Carl and Genevieve Landis Vieth, was born May 3, 1938, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and died July 27, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home, in Salida.
He graduated from Oakland High School, Iowa, in 1957 and attended Simpson College for several years before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. After an honorable discharge in 1964, Mr. Vieth returned to Oakland, where he managed the Oakland swimming pool.
He enrolled in mortuary school in Dallas, Texas, in 1966, graduating in 1967. He married Suzanne McRory July 6, 1967, at the Oakland Congregational Church. Mr. Vieth did his funeral director internship at Hamilton Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa.
The couple returned to Oakland before moving to Atlantic, Iowa, where they operated a funeral home. He returned to Oakland and took over Vieth Funeral Home which he purchased from his father. He owned and operated the home until Dec. 31, 2000, when he retired.
He was in business and a business owner in Oakland and surrounding areas for more than 35 years. After retiring, the couple moved to Panora, Iowa, and later to Salida.
Mr. Vieth earlier was a member of the Oakland Congregational Church and was most recently a member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
He served on the Oakland City Council for eight years, belonged to the Oakland Lions Club, the chamber of commerce, and the Oakland Shade Makers.
Mr. Vieth enjoyed the outdoors, especially working in his yard and garden. He founded the recycling program in Oakland and was District 11 Governor for the Iowa Funeral Directors Association from 1977-80.
He loved to travel on his Gold Wing motorcycle. He was an avid cyclist, and rode in RAGBRAI 15 times, and bicycled across Nebraska and Wisconsin. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
Mr. Vieth was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Lee Ellen Hoeppner and Vivian Lee, who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Vieth of Salida; his children, Todd (Sherry) Vieth of Omaha, Neb. and Tricia Vieth and her husband, R.L. Smith, of Boulder; his granddaughter, Michaela Jones, Omaha; and his sister, Kathleen (Roger) Phillips of Rogers, Ark. and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
An open visitation will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. today at Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland with the family present. The funeral service will be at at 10:30 a.m. July 31, 2004, at Oakland United Methodist Church, Oakland.
Vieth Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Local arrangements were handled by Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Betty Shierlock

Betty E. Shierlock died Sept. 16, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Ms. Shierlock was born April 28, 1932, to Frank and Lillian Eatmon in Raleigh, N.C. She was the sister of the late Frank (Bill) Eatmon also of Raleigh.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Eloise Eatmon; Woody and Gay Eatmon and their children, Casey, Berry and Wendy.
Ms. Shierlock will be missed and admired for her spunk and tenacity by her “adopted” family, Mary and Bill Hanner, Marengo, Ill.; Jan and Joe Stadler, Nathrop; Caroline, Andy, Gretchen and Kyle Knaut, Golden and Kat, Dakota, Rachel and Cody Jackson, Salida.
She spent her career life in Underwriting Management for Travelers Insurance and Great American Insurance Co.
Her life passion was evident in her long relationship with the American Kennel Association as a breeder of champion Siberian huskies. At the time of her passing she owned three beautiful huskies, Bailey, Mariah and Antero and the elusive “Little Cat.” Her pets were special companions.
She loved the west and moved to Colorado five years ago. She could see Mount Antero daily and was grateful that in her final years she was surrounded by such beauty.
Ms. Shierlock enjoyed Taos and Santa Fé, N.M., and studied Native American life, spirituality and history extensively.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 8, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Salida. Donations to the charity of choice are requested in lieu of flowers.

Betty E. Shierlock

Betty E. Shierlock, 72, Nathrop, died Sept. 16, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
A complete obituary will follow when funeral services are set.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth (Veltrie) Johnson

Mary Elizabeth (Veltrie) Johnson, age 77, a life long resident of Salida, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004. Mary was born Sept. 5, 1927 in Salida to Ben and Amelia (Coster) Veltrie. She married Dan Johnson May 19, 1951 in Salida.
Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert Veltrie and brother-in-law Leo "Bud" Cook.
Mary is survived by her husband Dan Johnson of Salida, sisters Pat Cook of Salida, Emma Bernhardt of Granite, sister-in-law Betty Veltrie of Salida, many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
At her request, memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment of her cremains will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Helping Hands or to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson

Memorial services for Mary Elizabeth Johnson were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 6, 2004, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M. was the celebrant. Musicians were Georgianna Smith and Jeanne Kostelic. Musical selections were “Prayer of St. Francis,” “Ava Maria” and “The Lords Prayer.”
Honorary pallbearers were Ron Veltrie, Greg Veltrie, Garry Cook, Kelly Cook, Bobby Bernhardt, Pat Bernhardt, Steven Bernhardt, Aaron Davis, Steve Weaver, Matt Bernard and Allan Smith.
Interment of cremains was at Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Rose M. Kroschel

Rose M. Kroschel, 87, Salida, died Sept. 25, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home in Salida.
Mrs. Kroschel was born April 3, 1917, in Ellis, Kan., to John Jacob Weber Weaver and Katherine Rosalia (Rumbach) Weaver
Mrs. Kroschel enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, cooking, spending time with her family and attending church at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa. Everyone knew her by her smile and beautiful blue eyes. She was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Curtis (Rosey) Kroschel, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, Canada; Kenneth Kroschel, Longmont; Raymond (Ileen) Kroschel, Del Norte; Dale Kroschel, La Junta and Timmy Kroschel, Alamosa; daughters, Rella (Andy) Jones, Salida and Judy (Patrick) McCabe of Soldotna, Alaska.
Other survivors are stepsons, Norman (Wilma) Kroschel, Delta; Delbert (Connie) Kroschel, Montrose; brothers Rudolph (Wanda) Weaver, Olathe; Jack (Jessie) Weaver, Gunnison and sister, Frances Winger, Orange County, Calif.; favorite relative, Elsie Kroschel, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 9-11 a.m. Oct. 2, 2004, at Holy Name of Mary Church in Del Norte. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Del Norte Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida.

Rose M. Kroschel

Mass of Christian Burial for Rose M. Kroschel was held at 11 a.m. Oct. 2, 2004, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Del Norte.
Fr. Martin Frias was the Celebrant. Collen Pughe was the organist. Musical selections were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.” Pallbearers were Curtis, Kenneth, Raymond, Dale, Timmy, Delbert and Norman Kroschel.
Interment was in Del Norte Cemetery. Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
