Max A. Shake
Max A. Shake, 81, Buena Vista, died May 18, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Shake was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Camp Point, Ill., to Marvin A. and Nora A. (Asher) Shake.
He moved to Salida in 1940 and married Fay Crymble April 24, 1943.
Mr. Shake was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1166 in Buena Vista. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He also was a member of Local No. 9 Operating Engineers Union for 57 years.
Mr. Shake is survived by his wife, Fay Shake; sons, Donald and Daniel “Boone” Shake; grandsons, Shawn, James and Donnie; granddaughter, Tomi and great-granddaughter, Sadie.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at VFW Post No. 1166 in Buena Vista.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Loretta A. Hren
Loretta A Hren, 89, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died May 28, 2004, in Colorado Springs.
She was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Leadville (Graham Park), to Josephine (Shanahan) and Patrick Sheehan. She married Louis Albert Hren who preceded her in death in 1948. Her son Louis also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hren lived in Leadville until 1962, when she moved to Salida. In 1977, after 22 years of service, she retired from Mountain Bell management as an assistant chief operator.
During that time she made many lifetime friendships. In 1991 she moved to Colorado Springs to live with her daughter, Mary Joan Bruce, who survives.
Mrs. Hren was a member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church.
She is also survived by grandsons, James (Jim) F. Bruce, Jr., Pueblo and Neil C. Bruce, Woodland Park; great-granddaughters, Samantha Bruce and Hayden Bruce, both of Pueblo and great-grandsons, Benjamin Bruce of Fort Collins and Matthew Bruce of Boulder.
Loretta was an inspiration to people who knew her, particularly her family. She will be remembered for her wit, enthusiasm, strength and courage.
Services will be held at the Church of the Annunciation of the Catholic Community of Leadville, in Leadville, at 11 a.m. June 2, 2004. Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery will immediately follow the services.

Norma Kathryn Daughety
Norma Kathryn “Kay” Daughety, 67 Buena Vista, died at her home May 28 2004.
Daughety was born March 19, 1937, to Manson and Marie Cadle in Springfield, Mo. She grew up in El Reno, Okla.
She married Leonard Daughety Feb. 14, 1956, in El Reno, Okla. and moved to the Climax/Leadville area with her husband in 1956. In late 1957 they moved and remained in Buena Vista.
Mrs. Daughety was an avid bridge player achieving the “Life Master” level, and was a current member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
During her many years in Buena Vista, she was a Delphi member, Boy Scout leader, long time 4-H leader, Republican Party member and an employee of public health.
She treasured the many friendships she made in Buena Vista and surrounding communities.
Mrs. Daughety is survived by her husband, son Rich Daughety, Buena Vista; daughter Susan (Kevin) Briggs, Westminster; grandson, Andrew Briggs and granddaughter, Alexandra Briggs, both of Westminster.
She was proceeded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. June 3 at Runyan Mortuary. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Leslie E. "Dancer" Walker
Leslie E. “Dancer” Walker, 59, Pueblo West, formerly of Salida, died Sunday May 30, 2004, in Red River, N.M.
Mr. Walker was born Dec. 11, 1944, in Salida to Harvey and Esther (Culp) Walker. He served in the U.S. Marines during Vietnam.
He was an engineer with the Rio Grande/Union Pacific Railroad for more than 30 years. His interests included riding motorcycles, building computers, photography and leather making.
He is survived by his daughters Sandy (Justin) Dunn, Grand Junction; LeAnn (Ken) Short, Grand Junction and Chelly (Bryan) Reay of Spanish Fork, Utah; brother, Robert (Vicki) Walker of Centennial; sister Barbara (Mike) Quick, Salida; grandchildren, Danyale and Ryan Lewis; Dillon, Zach and Katie Short; Chabrise Reay and great grandchild Kayce Richardson.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post No. 67 or to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3820 through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Leslie E. ‘Dancer’ Walker
Funeral services for Leslie E. “Dancer” Walker were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Rick Casteel officiated.
Musical selections played were “Ballad of Easy Rider,” “Remember Me,” “The Dance,” “Forever Young” and “Born to Be Wild.”
Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion held flag presentation ceremonies.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Ramona Surface
Ramona Surface, long time Salida resident, died June 2, 2004, in Colorado Springs.
She was a resident of Colonial Columns Nursing Home since 1982 after suffering a stroke in 1981.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold “Hap” Surface in November 1975.
Mrs. Surface is survived by her sons Chuck (Joan) Surface, Salida; Mike (Linda) Aichele, Salida; daughters Carli Clapper, south Texas and Kristi (Isaiah) White, Colorado Springs. She had 10 grandchildren and eight great grand children.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Upper Room Church of God, 12th and G streets in Salida.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Gideon Memorial Bible plan would be appreciated.
Beverly J. Nygaard
Beverly J. Nygaard, 75, Nathrop, died June 11, 2004, at her residence.
Mrs. Nygaard was born July 1, 1928, in Neilsville, Minn., to Peter and Dorothy (Olsen) Kunkel. She married Vernon Nygaard July 16, 1946, in Neilsville.
Her residences included Moorhead, Minn. and Denver. Mr. and Mrs. Nygaard spent the winter in Sun City, Ariz.
She loved the mountains, architecture, gardening and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Evening Light Fellowship Church in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mrs. Nygaard is survived by her husband, Vernon Nygaard, Nathrop; sons Jeffrey (Chris) Nygaard of Atlanta, Ga. and Wesley V. (Diane) Nygaard of Anthem, Ariz.; grandchildren Susan, Pamela, Jessica, Zach and Alyson; great grandchildren Ethan and Preston.
A memorial gathering will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Nygaard residence, 12000 CR 263 in Nathrop.

Henrietta Hosford
Henrietta Hosford, a former long-time Salida resident, died June 6, 2004, in Dallas, Texas.
She was born in Chicago, Ill., Sept. 20, 1912.
A brief celebration of her life was held in Dallas June 9, 2004.
Mrs. Hosford is survived by daughters Irene (Robert McLaughlin) Hosford, Dallas and Robin (Drew) Tommers Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
She was predeceased in 1989 by her husband, Raymond Oliver Hosford. The couple lived in Salida 18 years, before moving to Dallas to be near their daughter Irene.
Mrs. Hosford was a quiet woman of faith, had an enchanting smile and was a loving wife and mother. She was a watercolorist, talented teacher and a gentle soul.
She and her husband were active in the Salida-Aspen Music Festival and taught numerous local artists. Mrs. Hosford touched many lives.

Rev. Dr. Robert W. Musil
The Rev. Dr. Robert W. Musil, 74, retired United Methodist pastor, died June 12, 2004, in Denver as a result of fall.
He served as pastor of Salida United Methodist Church from 1983-1988 He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughters Rebecca Thompson of Salida, Karen Christensen of Denver and Sarah Burris of Durango; three grandchildren and his sister, Grace Swanson of Durango.
The memorial service will be held at University Park United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. June 26, 2004.
